What we have here is a failure to communicate. If one spouse wants to invite a friend to stay over, and discusses that with the other spouse in advance, and he or she agrees, then it's fine. Furthermore, the spouse should be included, or at least invited, for any entertainment or dinners out. Otherwise, it's a red flag, not to mention awkward for the friend.

All he needed to do was to ask first before bringing her in and maybe let her get to know the guest. Things might have gone completely differently. I wouldn't mind if we had enough space in the house if husband brought a friend as long as he asked in advance and I could get to know the guest before having them in the house. Yeah she/he might have had to wait elsewhere until meeting but then might have got a place to stay and nice company/possible new friend. But if I would not be asked first, I would also get pissed off.
