@Original_Tenshi_Chan2 жыл бұрын
And fun fact, good tailoring (to get the dress to fit someone with a totally different body type) can be just as expensive if not more expensive than buying a decent mid-range prom dress off the rack. It wasn't a matter of the in laws being poor, it was control and a power play. Either give them the wedding dress or be ostracized AND pay for the dress they got instead. OP needs to see this for the red flag it is. The sil wasn't crying because OP said the sil is thinner (as evidence by the "you were just jealous she would look better in your wedding dress than you" comment), she was crying as a manipulation tool.

@@Resilient_Sage88 it gets pricey real quick, unless they take it to a "discount" tailor. I have an unusual figure. No dress off the rack fits me, so for all my proms and home coming dresses, I had to have them tailored. Without fail, the cost of altering my dress ALWAYS cost more than the cost of the dress. I've heard from some brides it's the same or worse with wedding gowns (more layers, expensive fabric, etc). I wish I knew how to sew, is it something you want to do for a living? Ok, story 2 just reminded me of a friend's wedding reception. Both mothers had paid for a fancy reception as a wedding gift, but when we got there it was awful (not the parent's fault, they ended up with their money back and a huge apology). A full cutlery setting for everyone but only a couple of sandwiches and even the drinks didn't arrive. A lot of hungry guests rebelled and went to the nearby MacDonalds and brought back food and drinks. It was hilarious to see a fancy hotel dining room with milkshakes and burgers on the tables XD

story 1 (pre-update): I think they're both right, in a way. BIL and Kelsey broke up relatively recently, and she has been around for 10 years. it makes sense that they want to support her and still spend time with her similarly to before the breakup, as she is practically family. however, OP is also right in that, while she is practically family, there are still some boundaries that need to be erected/maintained to ensure that the family/Kelsey are able to move forwards in a healthy way, such that Kelsey is still important to them, but that she is able to have her own life/love-life as well. NAH Story 1 (post-update): OP's husband is so manipulative... using Kelsey's horrible break-up to guilt-trip OP into backing down and not putting up appropriate boundaries, so he can get a younger side-chick... also, how could he spend a *whole week* with Kelsey and *not* plan to get physical with her??? totally divorce-worthy, though it's up to OP if she wants to stay or not. just hope she realizes how manipulative her spouse is...

Story 1: I knew where this was headed before the update. Story 2: I was cracking up at Mark's reaction! 🤣🤣🤣 And yes, definitely the a-holes if they have whole roast chickens or anything else that is way better than what they feed the guests. The fiance sounds selfish and greedy, or at least a cheapskate, to me. Story 3: OMG! The audacity! They kept inviting you over for dinner because they were trying to get you to offer your dress, OP. I'll bet that they never intended to shop for a dress at all. They wanted your dress the whole time. The teen SIL probably had been whining about wanting your dress to wear to prom ever since your wedding day.
@MsUnamusedNerd2 жыл бұрын
STORY 3: *NTA* It does not matter that the wedding dress does not look like a wedding dress. It is still OP’s wedding dress and her 16-year-old sister-in-law is not entitled to wear it to prom where anything could happen to it. If she wants a beautiful dress I’m pretty sure there are plenty of thrift stores and even rental places where she can get a cheap/easily affordable dress for a one night event. They were talking about getting the dress tailored to fit the 16-year-old. I could possibly see it reasonable to have a dress be borrowed untampered, but having it tailored? What if Op wanted to wear the dress again for a vowel renewal ceremony for a future anniversary but she can’t fit in the dress anymore due to the modifications? Again if the 16 y/o wants a dress so badly she can find one at thrift stores or go to one of those formal clothing rental places and get a dress that she’s going to wear for like what, 4 hours max? They did manage to get her a new dress, but they were really expecting OP to help pay for it? WTF? The husband is a POS. He literally left his wife and ran home to mommy’s house for 3 days because he couldn’t get his wife to do what he wanted her to do? Red flags. The whole family turning into a cesspool because they thought entitled to that wedding dress. Prom is not that important to warrant someone being alienated and talked badly about 🤦🏻♀️ let alone for 16 y/o to burst into tears like a six-year-old that was denied a cookie before dinner. It’s just a stupid dance. If you’ve been to one school dance you’ve practically been to every single one of them. They’re all the same. I love the edit how the claims of OP not wanting to “share“ her dress because “you’re just jealous because the 16 year will look so much better than you in it and you’re not gonna have it out of spite“ No I’m pretty sure alienating someone out of the family because they didn’t bend to your will is spite :)

Lol, I went to a tiered wedding a long time ago and it was awkward as hell. Being cheated on tends to make someone feel less desirable and for some being desired by a married or taken person sates and inflates their ego. You’d just have to be a monster to do that. Story 2: I was not in attendance at this wedding, but my grandmother said this is what happened at my cousin's wedding. I don't think it was roast chicken, exactly, but my cousin (the bride) got veggie platters and had her mother and another aunt make a bunch of little finger sandwiches, while she and he husband were eating full meals. Even worse: I think the mother of the groom cooked those meals for them and then went and ate veggies and sandwiches with everyone else while they scarfed down on filet Mignon or whatever they had (again, I don't know exactly what it was, just my grandmother said it was a nice, fancy meal). They're divorced now and she's currently with another guy and pregnant with his baby. Apparently her baby shower wasn't much classier. I kind of want to attend her second wedding if she has one for the pure spectacle.

When they split my mom just kept her and my grandmother and everyone also agreed. She just jokingly used to say they fed her and she just kept coming back. I did not know any different than that she used to be there every day and coming with us on vacations. We called her name and "mom" as one name if we needed help because either would be fine.
