I am a Zeppelin fan at heart but I love ABBA. They sound like no other bands did back then or do today. Totally unique. They had a bit of progressive rock in them too, and power ballads, disco, rock, pure pop, Swedish folk-music and the shimmering golden stuff of legend. Songs like "Fernando" or my favorite of theirs "Knowing Me, Knowing You" which is clever on so many levels. (the video is bloody amazing) This song is the most disco of anything they ever recorded .. clearly directed straight at the crowd at Studio 54. It is mostly a dance groove and lacks some of the vocal pyrotechnics they are famous for. You need to introduce your metal head husband to some of that insane singing these girls are capable of. And good god the melodies .. these are songwriters of the highest order. Thanks for the reaction .. and Cheers 🍺

@@mickyboy7586 You forget when our 2 sweethearts are born, Alexia just turned 30 and Nick is a little older, AbbaMania was over by then. I've never been an Abba fan, but of course I heard them all the time on radio in the 70s/early 80s; but once I stopped listening to public radio, Abba was gone. I've never seen the Mama Mia film, I know of the musical here in Germany, but that's it. Try to judge from other people's view, not your own, it helps to understand a lot, listen to an old man 🙂

@@rudolfbecker4313 sadly I am a older man lol. I'm not being critical of anyone but I would have thought that a thirty year old would definitely know a bit about Abba. The Gold album has been in the charts all over the world on & off for years and the Mama Mia films both smash hits world wide (although not to my taste). There is also the Cher album of Abba hits recently released as well as other artists who have covered their songs and also Muriel's Wedding. I accept that some people may not be up on Abba but to not have any knowledge of them then they must have been walking around with their eyes and ears closed all their lives.

Abba hid some very clever chord progressions and appreciated hooks in their pop songs . And did some innovative push and pull with the tapes to fill out the sound .. People wonder why I praise them when I'm the tattooed meat head biker fronting a punk metal band , well it's the same as the the sex pistols loved Roxy music . Everyone had their influences . Depends on what you mean by disco. Sure, they did everything from schlager, folk music and almost jazzy songs to funk and glam rock. But Mamma mia was kind of disco too, recorded already in 1974. And their last three albums were all pretty disco-ish in most of the songs. Not that there is nothing wrong with that though.
@abbadocs
@abbadocs 2 жыл бұрын
@@herrbonk3635 By disco, people mean disco as a genre of music. Only 10 ABBA songs as categorized as disco, out of 100. "Mamma Mia" is classified as glam rock and pop-rock. Since you don't know much about ABBA at all, please, do tell us what song from "ABBA The Visitor" is a disco song?
@herrbonk3635

@@abbadocs "Categorized" and "classified" are key words here. By whom? Why exactly is that person or "documentary" correct? I'm not interested in such attempts at formal categories, but in reality, actual musical elements. None of Abba's song are "disco" in the american subcultural sense (the belonged in a very different world), but most of the upbeat songs on the last albums are just as much "disco" as the famous "Dancing Queen" tune was. I'm talking about drum and bass work mainly, i.e. the rhythmic structure and character. (I know Abba's work pretty well actually, including some of their musicians.)
@abbadocs
@abbadocs 2 жыл бұрын
@@herrbonk3635 "I'm not interested in formal categories." Geez Louise, a song is categorized in a specific Genre because they fill a certain criterion. Then why not call every upbeat song just POP music. So... now, "The Winners Takes It All" is a disco song because YOU FEEL LIKE upbeat songs should be called disco. After 1979, ABBA abandoned everything related to disco, "Lay All Your Love On Me" was the only holdover. ABBA moved on to pop and synth-pop. Now, ALL their synth-pop songs are apparently disco songs, hum. Why not call everything just ROCK, since you don't care about categorization AT ALL. ALSO, "Musically, Dancing Queen is a Europop version of American disco music." Toby Creswell - music journalist, pop-culture writer, and editor of Rolling Stone.

"Voulez-vous" was an excellent song to use as an introduction. "Waterloo" is, of course, a must. My favorites are "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (a Man after Midnight)" and "Summer Night City." But as you know, there are so many. You mentioned "Dancing Queen," which was, I guess, their biggest hit, but I'd also suggest "Take a Chance on Me." For the more serious songs, well, there's "The Winner Takes It All" and "Happy New Year." Hell, just play them all.

Hi, Well ABBA have been on the news here in England only last week. Apart from reforming after over 40 years they have made a new album and have spent a long time recording a special live concert to be shown next year. They used cgi motion capture so when you see them live on stage, they will be young again. The clips shown of the concert is amazing looking at their avatars. It will be one of the biggest music events in decades. New album is released this year very soon I believe in November. Bought their albums on vinyl when they were originally released. Also bought their singles on 7" vinyl. My all time favourite track is called "Eagle". [ Album version ] Great reaction. I was not expecting an ABBA track, and I would definitely recommend "Eagle".

HOW, and this isn't meant as criticism or accusing you of faking it,but how on earth could someone in Europe or the US (or probably around the world) avoid hearing at least bits of Abba? They're still on the radio constantly, were used in so many movies, are played at parties or events etc (irrelevant of wether you like their music or not). It's almost like not knowing any note by Elvis Presley, The Beatles or Queen... That is fascinating in itself, Nick 😲 Among rock-fans, ABBA, of course, are still mostly a guilty pleasure, but still I'll dare and suggest a few of their hits here: "Take a chance on me", "Lay all your love on me", "Dancing Queen", "Super Trouper" or "Gimme Gimme Gimme" (more disco). Their ballads can be very emotional (most notably "The Winner takes it all") but also on the cheesy side (for my taste - songs like "Fernando" or "Chiquitita" steer very close to what in German-speaking countries would be considered 'Schlager').

One year they paid more tax in Sweden than Volvo motor company, that includes the truck division (big truck supplier in Europe) and the heavy movement division, and yet, ABBA paid more tax. They were unbelievable famous from western Russia, Southern Mediterranean to the northern west, I don’t think any other group had their instant reach. Waterloo, their first hit, was #1 right across the continent.

The first two are fun listens, with some great songs, but it's really their last 5 or 6 that show what masters and geniuses they are and became. Just great song after great song. Ring Ring is the first album, then Waterloo the second. Then ABBA, Arrival, The Album, Voulez Vous, Super Trouper, The Visitors. They also released "I am the City" as a song after they disbanded, along with You owe me one (which they said was more of a jingle and unfinished). Last year they released a 23 minute video called Undeleted Medley which contained many excerpts from unfinished songs strung together in the studio, along with them being mischievous and joking about, including singing Summer Night City (usually a great song) as terribly as they could. it's also worth a listen to - full of good sounds and music, even if unfinished.

Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree is a big Abba fan. Also, Janne Schaffer, who plays guitar on many Abba songs, is a great fusion/prog guitarist, famous for his collaboration with Toto, fusion/prog flutist/keyboardist Björn Json Lindh, they both also collaborated with the Swedish progband Isildurs Bane.

I still keep that Abba record where the song"Chiquitita" was included. They were very famous in my country, Argentina. They used to sing in other languages besides English. According to what I´ve found on the Internet , they recorded 4 songs in Swedish, three in German, one in French and 15 in Spanish

I write before I listen: ABBA won the Eurovision song contest in 1974 with Waterloo. They had only in Germany 20 Top Ten hits within 8 years, 9 of them charting at #1. I can imagine, if Nick's parent didn't listen to this light Pop music, it is possible, he's never heard of them and in the late 80s they probably weren't present in Mexican radio either. I'm sure, if he had heard them he would remember, because many of their songs are "earwurms", once you hear them, you sing them. I never was an ABBA fan, but in the 70s they were all over the radio in Germany, the songs are well composed, very good produced and very catchy with these 2 attractive ladies singing. I could probably sing 10 songs of them immediately :-) Now I'll listen.

Just knowing what I know of both of your music tastes, I suggest "Does Your Mother Know". In your quest for diversity, it's a little rock-y-er, some more male voices and just a whole lot of fun. As a single Dad of one daughter, I have pulled out the ABBA on many a car ride for some bucket seat dancing and father daughter harmonizing. Haha thanks for the memories.

Hi, friends, Wow! What a nice surprise to find ABBA Here. This group was my most favourite pop music group. I first heard them in 1974 and they remain my beloved music till today. I would suggest some of their songs in the chronological order and to get the right kick start with Ring, Ring (1973), Waterloo, Dance, Hasta Manana (1974, Waterloo was the song which opened for them the doors Internationally, because not many people knew them before the had won the Eurovision Contest in Brighton, UK with this song). SOS, Mamma Mia, Bang-A-Boomerang, I've Been Waiting For You, Rock Me (1975), Dancing Queen, Knowing Me Knowing You, Why Did It HaveTo Be Me, My Love, My Live (1976), The Eagle, Take A Chance On Me, Move On, The Name Of The Game, Thank You For The Music, I'm A Marionette (1977), Does Your Mother Know, Chiquitita, If It Wasn't For The Nights, Kisses Of Fire (1979), The Winner Takes It All, Me And I, The Piper (1980), Soldiers, I Let The Music Speak, Slipping Through My Fingers (1981), The Day Before You Came, Cassandra, Elaine, I Am The City (recorded after their last album "The Visitors"). It's funny but their music makes you smile and dance, however the lyrics are mostly very serious. Number one thing is the special way the female voices create a very unique harmony. After many years most of their song don't sound old. Have fun!

Great reaction! "Voulez-Vous" is a really great song. As a true ABBA fan and also being a fellow countryman to ABBA I can give you a few suggestions from each album and also in addition the two released songs from their new album called "Voyage". Through all of these suggestions you can listen how much they experimented and dabbled into different genres of music. Some of these are lesser known songs by ABBA, but in my eyes they are true gems and will as you mentioned show the true diversity of ABBA. "Disillusion"(Ring Ring Album, 1973) "Ring Ring"(Ring Ring Album, 1973) "My Mama Said"(Waterloo Album, 1974) "Dance(While The Music Still Goes On)" (Waterloo Album, 1974) "SOS"(ABBA Album, 1975) "Tropical Loveland"(ABBA Album, 1975) "I've Been Waiting For You"(ABBA Album, 1975) "Dancing Queen"(Arrival Album, 1976) "Knowing Me, Knowing You"(Arrival Album, 1976) "Eagle - Long Version"(The Album, 1977) "Hole In Your Soul"(The Album, 1977) "The Name Of The Game"(The Album, 1977) "Chiquitita"(Voulez-Vous Album, 1979) "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!(A Man After Midnight)" (Voulez-Vous Album, 1979) "The Winner Takes It All"(Super Trouper Album, 1980) "Lay All Your Love On Me"(Super Trouper Album, 1980 "The Day Before You Came"(The Visitors Album, 1981) "I Let The Music Speak"(The Visitors Album, 1981) "The Visitors"(The Visitors Album, 1981) And after a 40 Years hiatus, ABBA released two new songs just a few days ago called "I Still Have Faith In You" and "Don't Shut Me Down" from their new album "Voyage". The rest of the album will be released November, 5th this year. I hope you I'll enjoy all the songs I suggested to you!

I was ready to rip your list apart (as *any* shortlist of ABBA songs necessarily misses out some gems), BUT I have to say I'm largely content. The only HUGE omission is "Thank You For the Music" (The Album, 1977) - as you don't include ANY songs from ABBA's mini-musical "The Girl with the Golden Hair". Also, if you truly want to show ABBA's genre range, I'd also include "Like An Angel Passing Through My Room" (The Visitors, 1981).
