We take on one of our most intimidating challenges to date! Pouring a large outdoor slab for our sawmill. We went into it apprehensive but came out of the other side unscathed. We share our DIY experience and a very important lesson we learned.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

I've been doing concrete work off and on for about 30 years. I can say yall did a great job .. one thing I would like to suggest is that if your concerned, the concrete will set to quickly. Wet the dirt underneath, the concrete will absorb the water.and you can always ask the concrete driver to spray a little water in the drum to make the concrete wetter. That's how we do it in the here in the south when it gets 100 + degrees in the summer. Thanks for the entertaining videos. Bless you both..

I'm always tripping over "what these guys could do! Then trying not to say anything. Since first seeing the Quonset Hut type build I've been wanting to "suggest" ~ Knee Walls ~. Concrete Knee Walls ~. At least four feet high all around to "raise the roof" so to speak. I've seen this done and it makes such huge huge difference. The Quonset Hut type build is all about a concrete foundation. Raising the "Arch" gives much more use to the floor space. ~ Just saying ~. If they ask ~ I never said this.

Trick with concrete: Order more and if you have "extra" have an area say the front door or backdoor stoop pour it there so have it framed out in advanced. If you dont have enough for that extra area in front of the door stoop then you can always buy bags & pour the front door stoop yourself with quick dry concrete. (maybe like a area for the stoop of 3 X 5 or so. Not a large area but an area that you can pour the extra cement if need be.

I and my husband did a 24 x24 monolithic slab about 30 years ago and the exact anxious moments but the same results. It is empowering I even later took that knowledge and built a 10 x10 slab for a hottub all on my own. the driver even complemented me on how well that 10 x10 was done and nothing has cracked even 30 years later. congratulations on a successful pour. and I'm a women . so note all you women out there you can do it too.

But what a great job , especially for your first major cement project. Loved the longer videos. You totally made my Saturday!! It would take 450 80# bags OR 600 60# bags to pour that 10 yard slab. I don't think your qualified for the family business if its construction. Only a fool would suggest to pour it from "ready mix" bags. Oh, and the "molds" are called forms.

I worked on a concrete crew two summers while in college. One year we were replacing curbs , gutters and sidewalks in a ten square block area . The next year we were pouring a four lane road along the river front. The first summer I learned a lot about form setting and figuring how much concrete to order. I was never the responsible person for that but assisted enough that it looked doable. The second summer we were using metal forms and had a motorized screed that road the forms . We were pouring two lanes at a time and the concrete was 18” thick . A typical day involved an average of 150 to 200 yards of concrete . Then we would strip the forms from the pour from two days ago and set them to be poured the next day . I was really impressed with the way that you attacked your project . Your result is amazing. I know you are proud. I appreciate Ariel’s perfectionism , weren’t you a dental hygienist in your other life ……. ? You can’t be a GOOD RDH if you aren’t a perfectionist. I had the good fortune off working with two hygienists in my practice who made it a joy . I’m sure that there is a practice in the lower 48 that was sorry to see you go ! I really enjoy watching your adventures. Your fishing trips are especially interesting to me. I have been a fisherman from birth . Can’t wait to see what you get into next . 🤔🙃👍

A few tips for the shop slab next time: 1. They make coils of precut wire with loops on each end, and combined with a simple hooked tool where the handle rotates. Wrap the wire around rebar joints, insert hook into loops on the ends of the wire, and twist....takes about 3 seconds to twist wire tight. 2. When screeding, push screed board back and forth in a 'crosscut sawing' motion and it will move concrete easier. 3. Move the edger tool back and forth along the form with the leading edge raised up in the direction you are moving....creates smooth edge faster. This is not in any way a criticism....love ya'lls working together and following your journey, just some tips I've learned over the years being a do it yourselfer.....twisting all that wire with pliers had me squirming....
@brucea550
@brucea550 Жыл бұрын
My thoughts too, I’ve never seen screeding done that way but it worked. And they would have needed an 18’ 2x6 to do it the normal way. I love power screeds personally. Tie wires and a twister are essential to save your wrists! Only thing I saw ‘wrong’ is I would be nervous to not run poly under a slab, given how much moisture you can lose. But that’s why there was no cream on top when he floated it. I also would not trust leveling a form that large without either an 8’ level or a laser, but maybe they used that shorty with a long 2x4 and didn’t show it, or strung diagonals that touched. I think they got lucky in ways they didn’t even realize. It came out nice!

Three, maybe four years ago I started watching your videos and the thing that stood out to me was this amazing connection and teamwork that just inspired me so much. You guys have it figured out. A few years down the road and that’s still the thing I always notice. Much respect to you both and looking forward to the next video 👏👏👏🙌

Love seeing the notification when you guys post a video. I cant wait to see all your projects, how your garden area will be and hopefully you guys get to make a cellar again with this new property. I cant wait to see your canning and more food videos again. You guys help me keep hope I will have my own little farm one day and be able to make so many projects myself. Keep up the good work 🙂❤ and hope everything keeps getting better for you two .

I really like it when you give the date, the sunrise/ sunset and temperatures at the beginning! You are so far north that the difference from my home in Texas is so great! My husband and I really enjoy traveling to Alaska and the full day of sunshine is always amazing! You two are doing such a a fantastic job with this new property! Way to go!!!

I appreciate how the two of you take on new and somewhat intimidating projects, but through research and thoughtful reasoning you push forward and execute your plan. You're an inspiration to those of us considering our own projects. "Thanks" for sharing, and until next time take care and be safe!

Great job, guys! I just had a 24 x 40 slab poured for my shop at the farm, and yours looked just a professionally done as the one my contractor did!

What a treat! (I think I forgot to comment on the last video lol but I'm still alive and avidly watching!) What you guys manage to accomplish is always amazing and inspiring! Bandit is so cute in his little coat! A very fancy little gentleman! Lol at first I thought Peppi was a bear cub and was very concerned. She's so fluffy I want to just stick my face in her tummy. Go Peppi climb that tree! Hope Bo is doing well. Arielle I love your overalls! They're so cute. I wish I could find some that would fit, alas. The smoothing part is so satisfying and the final result was so lovely!

That was awesome! I was also involved - sitting in my kitchen and having breakfast in a big city - and I could feel your stress level, your hard work, your perfectionism and shouted with Ariel, as Eric stepped on the (luckily dry) concrete! 😂 I really love everything what you are doing! Your Channel is like a meditation for me and very relaxing and valuable. You are a gorgeous couple! You have to be happy - like Ariel said to Eric! Good Job! 😊
