I'm building my own tiny house.. I will have a concrete crew do what is seen here in video however, I will lay my own concrete block basement.. (some experience some years ago.. but, I'll learn again.. a lot of work when I'm only a one man team.. some things later like plumbing & electrical I have some help there.. mine is 16×20 cabin with a cellar/basement & it will be intense for a 50yr old guy but, I know I can do it

I had enough of doom and gloom being broadcast and posted and it’s raining so I went looking for something I might learn from. I won’t say I have done concrete work I did drive a mixer truck for a summer and know those guys work very hard. If I was younger I would be willing to learn and do some myself because I love to see things built. You also remind of one of my firefighters, he worked like you full out till it was done right. I will be watching just for the enjoyment of the work so keep up all the good work !

Mike! This is the second video of yours that I've watched and this time, I subscribed. I'm impressed. Not only by your knowledge, but also how willing you are to share it (and how clear & easy to understand you make it). I'm not interested in starting a concrete business, but I am learning to make aircrete domes and they need a solid slab to sit on. I've only seen them made by pouring concrete on dirt - no vapor barrier, no insulating foam- so seeing the styrofoam in this foundation made me very happy. Wow this was a great very informative video. Thank you for your thorough explanation of the process, tips and tools you used. My husband and I live in a Crossroads Hampton destination travel trailer on his parent’s 2 acre property to save money on living cost and raise our chickens and ducks on. We need to add a 25’ wide x 51’ long concrete slab with a slight angled ramp on one end to drive the trailer on it. This concrete slab will eventually serve as a foundation for a double wide trailer that we will buy later on and live in that and sell our trailer. The concrete slab is estimated at 34 yards of concrete to be 6” thick with 6 bags of concrete and using rebar for strength and stability. We were given a quote by my dad’s friend who is also a long term cement contractor and would love to allow him and his team to work on our new concrete slab but it’s being quote a very high price as it should be we just can’t afford that at this time and we need to get this concrete pad done since our trailer has been sitting on hard dirt for over a year since we got married. My dad, my husband, my father in law and I will work on this project on our own to save a lot of money that we can use towards saving for the double wide home. We’ll also attempt to make a stamped stained concrete patio similar to what my dad has which is a beautiful adobe color, very earth tone color and goes with any landscaping. Any tips you can pass my way would be very helpful. We will also try to rent the tools as well and hire a cement company to deliver the ready cement like you did. The slab you did here came out beautifully. I’ll be sharing this video and the other video on the start to finish for a concrete slab with my husband and our dads so everyone knows how the project should go. I usually take a EastWing and tap the bulkhead to reduce honeycombing. I also use form oil to make stripping a little easier. I noticed the forms looked a little dry. This would have been a nice size slab for a vibra-screed. That way Luke coulda dropped the mag darby and pick up a come along to rake on one side. Not only is flatness insured if used correctly. It also vibrates the large aggregate down and brings the finest and paste to the top to make sealing it with a bullfloat a snap. I been doing this for over 35 years. I was ACI certified, went through a three year apprenticeship, was a foreman over several jobs as well as business agent for fifteen years in the OPCMIA. I've been on pours from 200 sqft to 20,000 sqft, from 4" to 2' in thickest. I've worked with laser screeds mounted on a rubber tired frame, cable hand cranked vibrating screeds, vibra-screed and of course 16' mag straight edges. My biggest pour was probably about 12 years ago for Hi-Way Paving on Corridor H in the Eastern Panhandle of WV. We poured 200 ten yard tandem dump trucks full of 1.5" slump 45000psi mud. 2000yds and 3/4 of a mile of two lane highway in about 14 hours. I retired about 2 years ago with 33 years service. I still do side jobs and just prepped formed poured and stamped a little slab at Deep Creek Lake in MD couple months ago. Not only do we have some women in my old local but up in the Northern Panhandle around Wheeling we have a female business agent. Flatwork was always the favorite of most finishers compared to Heavy/Highway. However a bridge deck working behind a Bid-Well was one of my favorite. There's very few big buildings, bridges, roads or sidewalks two hours from my house in any direction that I or one of our guys I sent had a hand in helping finish it. It's good feeling to know a lot of my work will be here long after I'm gone! Over the years I've found working with concrete is alot like dealing with a woman. The more you play with it the wetter it gets. You'll wait on it but it won't wait on you. Just when you think you have it, it'll get away from you! Hurry up guys the truck's coming!

I like pouring concrete. I’ve helped out on some bigger jobs but I’ve only planned and organized smaller ones on my own. I recently did a footing for a stone column that will be used as an entrance gate for a property. I had a harbor freight electric mixer and it took 93 80lb. Bags to complete. Needless to say that was way too many bags to be running through a little mixer. Both the mixer and I survived but we took some years off our life span. I’m planning on pouring a slab for a mortared stone patio at my house this spring. Its fairly big approximately 15’ x 30’. I’m definitely going to call a truck for that.

Home Depot had a two-story tiny house 16x24. Now they're like 12 by 20. Kind of sad. But I have plans hopefully within the year to put a ADU on my property. Also was looking to pour 16 by 24 pad on each side of the garage. And put queen trusses on top.

Been watching lots of your vids. Excellent source of info and tips. Only one thing I disagree with is the wet setting of rebar. I was talked into it by a contractor on a slab I helped out on for my employer as it was faster and less labor intensive then tying a "ladder" of rebar around the perimeter. 2 years later massive cracking and heaving on ever rebar line. Granted a non heated building and much different ground. Not being critical, you do excellent work, I just know I will be taking the time to tie all rebar in the future.

I have done footing's, foundations, walkways and slabs. It has been years since I have done the work and we are getting closer to pouring our insulated radiant heated slab. 30' x 60', I have been thinking about tackling it on my own, I have been quoted 16k from a contractor @ 4", but if I do it on my own I could pour the 6" slab for what I want in the mix for in my area $170 per yard 35 yards total = around $6500 with tax. That would give me the money for the R-20 insulation under the slab and also pay for the radiant heating tubing. I have thought abought making a wide screed to use, or passably hire a couple of able bodies who would like the extra work for s few hours. I like the channel, you have a lot of information for people to use if they choose to do so.

Another great video Mike. 14' screed is as big as I go to. Any more will pull your guts out. It would be nice for me to just pour and do some forming but I get stuck with a lot of grade work. I've done the math and I make a lot more pouring concrete.

Yes. I do much better if grade work is already done. I've considered going up on my excavation price. I rent my equipment as I need it now. Would make more if I owned a skid steer and mini excavator. I had a guy make me an offer a couple weeks ago. He does grade work, all form work, goes back and gets forms for $40 a yard. I'm thinking about considering. All I would do is pour.

There's good money in just pouring and finishing. Sometimes you can get in 2 pours a day. Maximize your time and profits.

Great video and thank you for posting it. You and your guys make it look so easy. I have yet to pour a slab and looking to do a couple at my place. One will be 22'x15' and one is 14'x15'. Nothing big, just bigger than I have done. In the past I have done small footings for equipment and steel storage racks and that has been it. Biggest I have done was 7' x 5'x 16" deep for a material rack that held 1"-4" thick pieces of steel 4'x8'. Appreciate the information and look forward to more videos.

We'll use a product called Iso-strip off for the forms and glue them to the existing house foundation and retaining wall. It's a piece of 1/2" foam by 4" or 6" that will allow for expansion and contraction. Here's my page about it: www.everything-about-concrete.com/concrete-expansion-joints.html

I would have used 16’ screed just so we wouldn’t have to walk in the concrete. I use a 20’ on driveways because they usually 18’ wide so don’t have to walk in concrete. I’ve always hear guys say putting water in concrete makes it crack, but I’ve never found that to be true. Actually the less concrete in it will keep it from cracking, ( you can bend a piece of paper, you bend a pencil it will break the pencil has more wood) It’s code in our town to put bolts every 4’. We measure them out for there rim joist plates. Example if they are using 16 ‘ 2x4’s for there plate we would put one bolt at 15’10” and at 16’2” so the next plate would have a bolt just a couple of inches from the beginning and end of the board. Sound hard/complicated but it’s not and the carpenters love it. Looks like you had new handles on the bull float.

With a thicken edge slab does the inspector question the depth of the footer part of the slab?In NC frost line is 12 inches. The edge of the slab is usually 16”. Do you dig down the 16” on the perimeter or build it up? Thanks Dan
