This captures the duel perfectly. The coldness and inhuman sounds of Hugin and Munin at the start, Trigger's theme rising to answer, a flurry of sound as they clash, trigger's theme surges as he gains the advantage before that final rise and then fade as we all think it's finally over.....

This battle is probably one of the few times that actually made me feel intensely invested and extremely emotional in a video game. I felt legitimately like the stakes were beyond everything I could ever imagine holding and it was all on a single moment. This song and the duel was terrifying at the start as I was in an under-equipped fighter!!

The AC7 motif is one of the best thematically consistent musical themes in modern gaming. Show me a soundtrack that does a better job. Hush, Daredevil, Archange, Sol Squadron, Two Pair, Drag Racer. These are all very different pieces with different tones but they're all underpinned by this motif or a variation of it. And every time this motif comes up, the listener immediately understands that the characters and events the score is relating have achieved something thought impossible until then. Considering how the Ace Combat series is, at its core, arcade flight shooters they've had a disproportionately large influence on how studios treat the music in their games.

Not to rain on your parade of praising Ace Combat here but there are more video game OSTs from older, more significant franchises that make use of leitmotifs to this extent: >Monster Hunter >Final Fantasy (especially XIV in particular) >Persona >Dark Souls This isn't to take away the achievement Kobayashi and his team has accomplished with cementing Ace Combat's soundtrack as the standard from which all other flight arcade games should look up to when composing memorable musical pieces however.

@@gnw_AstA True, there are excellent game series that make great use of musical consistency, but I don't think any other franchise comes close to what Ace Combat achieves _with_ its music. Every track in any Ace Combat game is scored operatically. These other titles don't do that. They don't use the music _in leiu_ of dialogue. Ask somebody who hasn't experienced any of those games to listen to the soundtrack on its own and tell you what the music is conveying. Of course this wouldn't work if Ace Combat's soundtrack _wasn't_ thematically consistent. It is more similar to a film soundtrack in this regard, like Star Wars or Lord Of The Rings. (And no, boss music doesn't count because boss music is used to signify a change in gameplay, not a change in narrative)

@@dylanwight5764 Not quite. Ace Combat just so happens to be the first Flight Arcade game to make use of those art styles in its soundtrack considering how niche the genre Ace Combat belongs to. There are other game franchises that's been doing this with their music for a while now especially in the RPG department. Alex Moukala's analysis of how the leitmotif is used on Daredevil basically has him making a fairly accurate assumption of Trigger's fall from grace then rise as a hero even though he has no context about the game's full story since he has not played the game. The thing is, good video game music shouldn't rely on its built-in narrative alone to be good, imho. It should be able to stand on its own, while being elevated itself when used in conjunction with the story of its game and the fact that Ace Combat can do that to the ears of us casual fans and professional composers alike speaks wonders of how ridiculously good Kobayashi and his team really are. Ace Combat is not objectively the first video game franchise to do such a feat in game music composing but you can damn well bet it is one of the greats in the industry due to what it has achieved in its niche genre. From one legend to another, as they say!.

I know you're talking about modern gaming but for ace combat i think they did it much better in ac4, it has megatlith/ intro song motifs throghout the game in a much more subtle way, thats why the full song hits so hard at the end. While playing ac7 for the first time i tought they were reusing the same song in some missions

This song throughout for me sounds more urgent and tense than Daredevil Yet it still does have that moment where it gives you a sense of determination and triumph YOU need to stop the ADF Drones before they can upload YOUR flying style to the drone database across the continent, and ONLY YOU can accomplish that.
