Guys this is VERY early Deep Purple. This song wasn't even written by them. It was written by Joe South and originally released by Billy Joe Royal in 1967. Deep Purple released this cover of Hush in 1968. This incarnation of Deep Purple is different from the line up you're used to. Jon Lord and Richie Blackmore are the same, but this line up had Bobby Woodman on drums and Nick Simper on bass. Rod Evans was the singer. Ian Gillan didn't come till later. As I said, this is VERY early Deep Purple.
@andrewsingh78602 жыл бұрын
Not Bobby Woodman on drums but Ian Paice, the original and only drummer Deep Purple have ever had, from forming in 1968 to breakup in 1976 and since reforming in 1984. He's the only original member still in the band to this very day.

I can see your point about the lyrics, but to put them in context: (A), this was Deep Purple's debut album, and that kind of lyrical styling was still pretty common in 1968... and (B), this was actually their cover version of a song written a year earlier by an American composer (Joe South) for pop-and-country singer Billy Joe Royal, and that kind of simple "moon-june-soon" rhyming was *very* common in American pop and country back then.

If you like this, you might want to check out two Spencer Davis Group songs: Gimme Some Lovin. and I'm a Man. The lead singer was Steve Winwood, then in his teens, who went onto Blind Faith, Traffic, and then solo. For that material the cool stuff is organ and vocals. They didn't have a guitarist anywhere near the level of Deep Purple's Richie Blackmoor. Spencer Davis Group is also sixties, not seventies. Excellent choice on Hush. Someone gave you good advice

I love this choice. "Hush" is like a semi-forgotten classic. I remember hearing it a lot as a kid, and I hardly ever hear it nowadays, probably because it predates the "classic" Deep Purple lineup. The simplistic lyrics were pretty typical of that time period, and I don't think some complex, philosophical Bob Dylan-esque poetry would have worked in this context. This song is more about the melding of two monster hooks (the "na na na" and the "hush hush" parts) and the overall groove and feel.

Awesome song, Can you Imagine hearing this for the first time in the late 60`s. Deep purple was way ahead of its time . No group sounded as Deep Purple. Lot of bands wrote the lyrics on the run as they was in studio. I like lyrics that rhymed. Great guitarist in this band. A + for any song back then is great . Mixing was good. Recording Equipment wasn't near good as it is today but yet they still made it sound great. They really knew how to get the best out of what they had back then .

This is my all time favorite Deep Purple song. The groove is everything. I love how they start with the hook. The keyboard (Hammond) is done by the bass player, Jon Lord. Classically trained, he spearheaded a performance with the Royal Philharmonic very early on in the Deep Purple timeline. It was groundbreaking. Metallica and many others have done it since, but at the time, it was unheard of, especially for such a heavy band.

And the reactions are consistent and trusted and valued. The fact your visibly wearing the cans is v important.. and now you've got the room sorted out I think you nailed the whole package for going forward. Hope you sell many tees.

One of their best songs, and made back in the day when musicians had to know how to play an instrument, unlike today when musicians play that techno sampling they call music.

Hey Guys. This is an early effort by Deep Purple and in fact it was the first Deep Purple song I ever heard. For me what stands out the most is the Hammond organ solo. One thing for sure, when I heard this I knew I wanted to hear more.

I was blessed with a musical family. My Grandfather was a trumpet player, who’s parents owned vaudeville playhouses and he is a famous artist. My father listened to big band and jazz/blues. My mom 11 yrs younger then my dad, 40/50’s dance music. My oldest sister dove face first into hard rock, my middle sister was into pop radio. Me the youngest got it alll... plus I added new wave and punk.... ps my great great (greats) grandfather is Francis Scott Key.... so there you have it!

This song went to #1 on the US charts in 1969/70. It was wildly popular for a long time. Anthem type of chorus. This song is really great to see live. Lots of cover bands like this song. Every time I see a band cover it, the crowd gets into big time.

This starts with a strong groove, that is in the same vein of excitement as the rhythm of Gimme Some Lovin' by The Spencer Davis Group. It's a helluva a lot chunkier though. Has Hush ever been used in a movie soundtrack? Gimme Some Lovin' is certainly popular for that.

This is the song that caught my 13 year old attention in 1968. It took me a while to even find out who did it. (Probably finally saw it on a jukebox.) I loved it even though I only heard it on a Ford Mustang AM car radio, in mono. Then on a gas station/diner jukebox. So I had no idea it rocked that hard, until I played it on my 800w home theater in surround sound. A world of difference.

Deep Purple didn't write the lyrics. But did a remake into a rock version, which was included on their Album in 1977. The song was written by Joe South and originally performed by country singer Billy Joe Royal in 1967. The song was actually about a guy that was crazy in love. Hence the verse: "I got a certain little girl she's on my mind No doubt about it she looks so fine She's the best girl that I ever had Sometimes she's gonna make me feel so bad. Na na na na na na, Na na na na na na. Hush, hush, I thought I heard her calling my name now. Hush, hush, She broke my heart but I love her just the same now, Hush, hush A lot of poetry has been written like that.

I heard this song on the radio in 1968 when I was 8 years old and I never forgot it. Two other great songs from the summer of '68 are, 'Journey to the Center of the Mind' by The Amboy Dukes and "Open My Eyes' by Nazz (Todd Rungdren).

As a writer, I’m all about the lyrics. There are instances where the lyrics can make or break a song. But if they are accompanied by exceptional musicianship I can ignore it. Words should enhance not distract. This is a discussion I never tire of but I’ll not monopolize the comments. Great song, great reaction. 🤘😚
@lisaw56044 жыл бұрын
Exactly. This song, even though not their lyrics, is perfect. Simple to the point, ya? Their superb musicianship takes one into the head of a person who is so crazy for another, that all reason goes out the window. My take on it anyway! Enjoyed the comment. :)

Listening to a few of these guys' songs and I am reminded how much more real the music was when I was their age (1970-80s). I listen to the radio now for a few minutes and it seems as if there's nothing but "production" sounds. These songs are musicians and their instruments and a tape deck in a studio.
