Awwww he's having so much fun! What a lucky husky, and you sound like such a fantastic owner! My poor husky lives in Texas so I have to make pools for him and take him to man made dog parks. But he still loves to swim!

Honestly, the fact that you can let your husky run off leash like that proves that you're a good owner and that Dexter is very loyal to you. My boss has 2 huskies and they are spoiled rotten and they still run off whenever they have the chance!

Sledding harnesses are great when you want your sibe to pull a sled or a bike. Not so great for a leisurely walk. And a collar just chokes Dexter and doesn't prevent him from pulling. A Halti removes some of his power by turning his head when he goes to pull. Dexter is very strong and this is the most effective way we have found to deal with his pulling. Thank you for your -very- helpful comments but I care for my dog and would not use something that would cause him harm.

I don't know which I'm more impressed by.. The fact that your husky readily goes for a swim without being asked, or the fact that your husky doesn't immediately head for the hills as soon as he's let off the leash. Mine would do the exact opposite in both things..

Well, 12 years and 7 huskies later, so far so good. We know the breed pretty well. I call it more than a coincidence. We only let them off-leash in places where they can run, like this video. Never in the neighborhood or city if that's what you thought. :)

No, it's called a pull harness or muzzle leash.. It helps train stubborn dogs to keep from pulling. Sib huskies can be extremely free willed and by using these it can help keep them in check while walking with them.
@HuskyDad11 жыл бұрын
I try to be a 'good' dog owner, I do my damn best as I feel my videos tend to suggest. But try as hard as I might, and I have tried all the tricks the 'experts' suggest, I can't get rid of Dexter's instinct to pull which has been bred into him over many generations. This halti has been the biggest help to me, that and the fact he is getting older and less lively with it. But thank you for you ill sighted judgements.
@TinyTicey11 жыл бұрын
So a halti/halty or a "gentle leader" (some ppl call them it) is like an attachment that goes over the nose, behind the head and attaches to their collar. It also has a small loop to attach the leash in case u make the halty too loose on your dog and they get out of it the leash is still then attached to the collar. They are meant for dogs that pull heavily. Most dogs don't enjoy the feeling of something pulling on their nose the way the halty does so they stop or slow down. Best purchase i made

Dexter's one weakness is other dogs. He still has trouble resisting the urge to go play. But he will always come back to us when we call otherwise. If we are confident there are no other dogs around, we have absolutely no issues letting him off the leash. Even if there is dogs it's not an issue unless the other owner has an issue with him wanting to play.

We leave it on because it makes it easier to attach his leash again in a hurry if need be. He also doesn't take any notice that it's still on, as you can see. If it was bothering him he has no trouble taking it off himself, trust me.

My dog 75%husky and 25% Border collie. He is soon 15 months and I let him run free almost like this, he returns whenever I call wich I do when he is out of sight behind a corner or a bush up ahead. He doesnt run of chasing things, because we walk past birds, cats, deers and other animals everyday. Huskies are pack animals like any oter breed and they obey the pack leader. Clear, calm, understanding and assertive goes a long way.

Husky /= other dogs, you can keep them outside as a puppy and form a bond as much as you want, when they get older some of them will change. They will still follow you but they are hard-wired to explore, and some of them have such a strong instinct that they will scout areas as big as 500-1000 square meters away from you. In safe areas this is perfectly fine, not so much near big cities.

Dexter is a beautiful husky! I have a 15 month old sibe named Ellie. I have had her since she was 8 weeks and she is the best thing in the world. Have you tried a chest leash/ harness. It wraps around the front stomach and back. and it's supposed to be good for dogs who like to pull when walking. It doesn't strain their head or neck, and the pressure is applied in a spot where it's comfortable for the dog, and you have better control over there movements.Rather than something thats around there face, and close to their eyes. Just a thought!

it`s funny so many people don't know a halti... both of my dogs have them... hear in germany most of the people think it's a kind of muzzle and get very afraid of my dogs, what's funny because one is a ratonero bodeguero andaluz-mix and the other is a podenco-mix and they are both so affectionately, specially the small one loves everyone she meets
@xXKadebaXx11 жыл бұрын
i would still use some sort of harness. I'm not saying a sled harness but just a harness of some sorts. I do because my dog has pulling issues with a collar and she chokes herself and she's calmed down a lot with the harness c: but if you find what you are using as effective.. well keep using it

Please tell me how you've trained Dexter to come. I've heard that once you let a husky off the leash, they're as good as gone!
@Andrew-pi3xl10 жыл бұрын
Getting the energy out before you let them off the leash is a good thing it tires them out and they are less likely to run away. The major thing though is making sure they respect you. On the walks they follow you and not lead the way it helps him realise that you are the alpha and not him, he goes where you command.
@quiettornado197010 жыл бұрын
dawn wolf is it true that huskies are very smart dogs?
@Andrew-pi3xl10 жыл бұрын
Huskies are very intelligent dogs but being able to train them is a different matter. In order to train the huskies though you need some way to drain there energy. with my husky I would take him on a 5km walk in the morning then another in the night. When huskies are calm they are obedient and trustworthy but if they have no drain for there energy they will run a muck.
@quiettornado197010 жыл бұрын
that would be their for pro-athletes only not couch potato.
@Andrew-pi3xl10 жыл бұрын
I don't know I just walk him I don't run him. there are plenty of other ways for him to burn energy. Swimming is a great way but if you don't have a pool an easy solution to the long walks is get him a vest. Purchase a vest with pockets then you can put some weights in it. the weights will help him burn energy without having to go for long walks.

I'd really like to know how you,or people commenting on this post, have trained your huskies to be responsive off leash. Everyone that I have talked to have pretty much said that huskies should never be allowed off-leash. Which I feel is a little insane.
@allypallywizzy10 жыл бұрын
I would say that if you want to let them off then find an enclosed area first. Thier first time off lead will deffo mean they will run. We used peparami; lots of, in the recall. I also use the most high pitched and fun voice ever so the come back for play time and 'sweeties'. Also a loud whistle. We never let her off near a road or would never trust her off lead in the town, they have ADD type tendancies and would just bounce from person to person all the way down the street. Also like the chap said, you need to give them time to play and be ready to go home otherwise like any other inteligent creature she wont come unless your REALLY insistent as "pffffft; I hasv'nt had time to play YET"

Aaannd than there is a cat at the otherside of the road and your husky is gone. Its perfectly possible to have a husky of leash in safe area's, my husky even obeys 99% of the time when she is playing with other dogs. But near big roads, 99% is never ever enough. And huskys can be rebellious sometimes.
