Have you ever though of getting a lift like the small engine shops use where you roll whatever you're working on, & it lifts it up to a comfortable height to work on? It would make it easier to work on & film. Excellent video. I like your narration & explanations.

Me, for the cost of a 5,000 watt generator, I would be buying a new one. No work, no hassle and hopefully no worries that it would break down 3 months later after I fixed this one up. Especially if I had to pay $170.00 and $75.00. I will throw in another $250 and get the new one. However, this is a good video because I bet for many people who have a generator and rarely start it and the carbs get gunked up would see that it is probably just the carbs and could maybe clean them themselves and save themselves some $$$$ by taking it some place that will tell them it has major problems and rip them off. The other thing is I never see on any of these types of video's anyone tell people how IMPORTANT it is too start your generator and run it with a load at least every couple of months to keep it running smoothly and hopefully not have any problems when you need it. Living 3 1/2 miles off the ocean here in SC I am always doing that 2 month running of the generator because I may need to use it for some time if a major hurricane hit.

One thing I have learned is I always will check the carb bowl for bad gas on an unknown item. You have almost always had to clean the carb. Thanks for the video.

When I clean slip rings or a commutator, I spray some Contact Cleaner on the Scotch Brite pad to help remove the oxidation.

Thank you once again. At first I thought you were going to increase the govenor tension prior to increasing the avr. This was because the no-load frequency was only 60.7 hz. On some videos you like the no load Hz to be around 61.4-5. Obviously, you made the correct call. I have found the smaller jaw vicegrips (wr 5) have finer teeth and grip the screw heads a little better and with less marring. They also are great for stripped brake bleeder valves. Thanks Craig. Yes this one was a little slow when started. Was considering upping the speed a little, but the speed came up as the engine warmed up. In the end I think it was running around 61.3. Anything in the 61-62 hertz range I will usually leave alone. Especially on the Briggs engines. There is no fine engine speed adjustment, just bending the governor tab..

I usually shoot for 60Hz at 50% load but I've seen the manuals state 60Hz at full load is the proper spec.

@@kevin9c1 60 hertz half load is probably ok. If you set to 60 at full load, the engine will be running closer to 64 hertz with no load. But, it depends on the engine. Would not exceed 62.5 hertz without a load.

@@jcondon1 Here is what the L-head manual says about generators: "NOTE: If available, use a load bank to load engine to full generator rated output. With generator at full rate output, turn screw to obtain 3000 RPM, 50 Cycle or 3600 RPM, 60 Cycle" I tend to prefer 50% or whatever nominal load you expect.

Great Video. Here, i did the adjustments to the AVR Trimpot´s with the motor running. Is a better way to adjust the voltage. You can see the voltage while adjusting. No problems whatsoever.

3000 watts and 58 HZ seems a bit low on the speed. Normally if generators have enough horsepower to wattage at full load they should not go below 58 HZ. The governor may need to be slightly adjusted but other than that great job!

Good video. From my own experience I learned that if the genny has a high oil switch as well as the normal low oil switch, you definately want to go with a non-detergent oil. A detergent oil can foam up and when it hits the switch it well shut the genny down. Then when the foam settles you can start it again...briefly. Becomes a mystery shut down.

Like your new generator. The 120v only ones make a lot of sense. People do not realize that a 7000 watt 120/240 volt generator is limited to 3500 watts on any one 120 volt receptacle and you have to worry about balancing leg one and leg two. With 120v only, you have access to all the power.

I have this exact generator for about 10 or so years now. It always has started up really quick and easy, but is not a quiet unit. I plug it into a simple 240v transfer switch, and it runs the entire house minus the AC and don't use the clothes dryer. I have noticed that my generator too, is a tiny bit under voltage but everything still runs fine. I think I will tweak the AVR after seeing you do it. Thanks!

I've notice what seems to be a little tear in the boot that carries the wires out of the power head to the switch box. I don't think that would be anything serious unless it gets wet, but I tell you because of the care and detail you put on your work. Great video! Greetings from Argentina!

They are. Have never removed them successfully with a screwdriver. Sometimes a JIS screwdriver or impact works. Vice grips always work.

you know what's worse? I bought a Yamaha EF2600 with a description that read "runs good". I pick it up, this thing has a dented valve cover, leaking fuel, sparkplug only half installed, governor not working, wrong carb, and a bunch of damage from a fuel fire......luckily I bid the guy down a bunch and after months of work I have a sweet lil Yamaha genset

You really do excellent work James. I would have suckered into using the carb that was on it so you might be a bit better than me. I don't know how much you got for this one, but if you got a good price for it it would certainly be OK to spend all you did but I would never be able to get back that 90 dollars for that Stens around here, as the other carb would certainly run someone good for years that kept the rain off and ran the carb dry upon stopping. I always do so I wouldn't be a good customer for you I'm afraid.

I am in Louisiana and expect a bad hurricane season this year. I am great with lawnmowers, I prefer Honda but a wealth of information on generators which I am less educated on. I find them after hurricanes or before dumped by the side of the road because apparently they didn't run or produce voltage. I have about 6 or 7 that I need to go through. A few questions, the solution you use to clean the carbs, and which sonic machine? Also thoughts on a Suburu engine. And if you also have a reliable source for parts on the generator portion? You have a skill to test and repair but often times for me it I just buy a new carb on instead of cleaning all the jets.. etc. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

That had water in the float bowl. When you used carb cleaner to get it running it agitated the water and your new fuel floating on top the water and allowed enough fuel past to keep running. The white stuff you see in the carb is the by product of organisms that thrive on the ethonal as it deteriorates. That generator was left with 10% ethonol fuel in it for about 4-5 years. Clean the tank or those organisms will come back to haunt you.

Has anyone EVER seen a circuit breaker go bad? I'm guessing the dirty slip rings was the original problem and the owner just started taking things apart at random. If he knew that was the issue he would have replaced it and had his generator back running... or at least been able to sell a working generator.

On the popping noise. There is a electronic chip built in the coil that replaces the points and how it works is when the magnet is at its sense point the chip sees this increase in voltage but as the magnet just starts to pass its highest peak...the electronic chip senses the the engine passing its ignition point and it shorts out sending a pulse to the coil and fires it and that gives a spark to the plug. What has happened to me a couple times is if the wire lugs on the coil are not very tight they may wiggle giving the electronic chip a false indication and firing the coil extra times. I had one riding mower that that i could not tighten it enough so i soldered the lugs on. Problem fixed.

What is your opinion of dual-fuel generators? I intend to run it on propane when needed. If I have to run it on gas, I will use ethanol free and drain the tank, run the carb and lines dry, and then drain the bowl. Does this protect me from something going bad?

Most of the issues I see are because of bad gas. Propane will never cause an issue as long as you have a good regulator and good pressure from the tank. If you use gas, just drain it out and your carburetor will be fine for the next time. The only downside with propane is less horse power so not as many watts out.

I have one of these and the 240v circuit seems to be off: 120v between neutral and the hot terminals, 240v across the 2 hot, but 150v/80v between the hot and the ground. Any thoughts?

Could you include a voltage reading across the high voltage outputs: L1-L2, L1-N, L2-N, L1-G, L2-G, N-G? Trying to troubleshoot the same model I own which is reading about 5V N-G and that would really help!

I do not have the generator anymore, but L1-L2 should be around 0.7 ohms, L1-N and L2-N around 0.3-0.4 ohms. Not sure on the rest.
