Hans Günther They can bite and their bites have a high chance of nasty infections. Attacks are rare and seals have a rep of being friendly, but they’re still wild animals and can be extremely dangerous if they feel threatened/chased/cornered. They’re even protected by the marine mammal protection act that prohibits people from “harassing” them in a way that’ll change their behaviour as often, human interaction negatively influences them. Feeding them from boats encourages them to seek handouts from other boats and risk getting killed in boat propellers, trying to get too close to them can cause them to injure themselves or attack you, resulting in the seal being destroyed, etc. Be very careful around them, don’t try to disturb them and don’t assume that just because there are cute videos of curious “sea dogs” playing with humans or other animals that they’re safe to be around. All it takes is one bite to be seriously injured.

I worked with seals. They're amazing animals, but still wild. One time I've got bitten when I was cleaning their enclosure because I didn't pay attention to warning signs that one pregnant lady seal given me. Tankfully it wasn't bad because I had hight boots, and seal didn't really want to hurt me, but it was dangerous. So don't bother seals especially when we don't understand their behaviours.

I hope that those horses never get into "Key's field" - I knew a horse who could hold a grudge for _years_ lol! He's so funny when he sees other animals, domesticated or otherwise. I can see the "please be my friend!" in his eyes so often! Jodie, given what you said when Key went to play with the seals, I hope you don't mind me saying the following (not aimed at you!!!) It's just a safety warning, that's all. Feel free to delete this comment if you want to. PSA for peeps with puppers in areas where mum seals pup. *Don't* take your dog on the pupping beach during the birth/breeding season. _Even on the lead._ It could scare a mum seal to the point where she'd abandon her pup. Many pups die of natural causes, but abandonment is pretty much a guaranteed death sentence. There have also been reports of dogs off leads killing seal pups. Now, I'm absolutely *positive* Jodie would never take Key to a seal 'maternity unit' , she'd _never_ knowingly endanger him, this is genuinely just a friendly notice for those who may be going on holiday in such areas. (It applies also to anywhere in the world where animals haul out of the water to give birth.) There are many beaches around the *many* thousands of miles of UK & Irish coasts (measure the edges of just the two main islands and it's more than the distance between London & Sydney IIRC), so you may go on holiday without even knowing that there is one of those beaches around your holiday residence. If you're going anywhere near the beach, ask tourist information or the local Wildlife Trust (there are nearly 50 individual trusts covering just about everywhere) if there are wildlife havens that should be avoided, and/or there are places where a dog can safely go off the lead. If you're a townie in particular who is used to having a safe dog park to take your fur baby to, _please_ check before you go or you could put the lives of wildlife *and* your dog at risk (and maybe even yours!). Once you're all safe and sound, make the most of our beautiful coastlines and have a wonderful holiday! ☺️

Once, when I was much, much younger, we had an Irish Setter and she befriended a young horse in a meadow not far from our house. They used to run along and play and try to outrace oneanother until ... the horse by accident hit our dog over the head with a hoof! I could hear the "clop!" sound loud and clearly. Our dog was a bit dizzied and shook her head, but never went into the paddock to play with the horse again. That was a shame though, since they were so cute playing together; but I think size matters here ;-)

Such good advice! This is also applicable to non-pet owners, aka 'hoomins on holiday'. It is always a good idea to do a little research, specially if you are venturing to unfamiliar territory. Every year in Churchill though there are numerous posted signs, you'd see tourists on the beach in bear season. In this case, the beach is attached to Hudson Bay and the Arctic Ocean. Polar Bears are NOT cuddly. Polar Bears can move VERY fast. Polar Bears are BIG, dangerous, wild animals. Plus, they really do stink quite badly, think old rotten fish breath. I've also seen visitors approaching a moose on the trail in the forest. Do not do this.

Seals are not just unpredictable and strong but also aggressive. They become really dangerous on water and they may drow anybody easily. While we keep thinking seals are fat and slow on land, we tend to forget that they are carnivores and great swimmers on water and most people keep embracing the false mindset that they are fragile and kind beings. Just consider that if seals may always attack a human just as an elusive way to protect their nests, a dog is a bigger threat for them.

It was great to see his behavior with other animals, and that horse did act like it was almost playing with him. I hadn't heard about seals being dangerous, but given that they are natural-born swimmers and if they had felt threatened by Key, I can see how that could be really dangerous... No, it's not safe to go in the water with wild seals, sea lions or otters. They might mistake Key's friendly approach for aggression and attack him. They all have sharp teeth and are far better swimmers. Watch from shore.
