The same thing happens to my Golden Retriever. It last about 30 seconds and our vet told us it's because Golden's are very popular and over breed in the US. She got her first episode when she was about 4 months old. But she hasn't had another episode since 2015. She has a small bump on her head as she and her siblings were rescue from a collapsed barn during Hurricane Katrina. A piece of wood knocked on top of her head when rescuer arrived and she was pretty traumatized by that event. She just turned sweet 16 and she's growing into a very happy and healthy dog.

It honestly looks like a partial seizure, sometimes called an absence seizure (compared to a generalized or tonic-clonic seizure with the shakes). When it happens in people, we'll seem to be "zoned out" but will sometimes walk and talk but in ways that don't quite make sense. We'll do familiar, repetitive motions, stuff that's in "muscle memory" while parts of the brain are having the abnormal activity. Just make sure he gets plenty of water, dehydration is hard on the brain! If he had opposable thumbs you might make sure doors were locked so that he wouldn't wander too far.

Jamie, Sherpa's "funny turn" could be some sort of mild form of Canine Idiopathic Epilepsy. If your Vet has already ruled that out, then maybe it's some kind of sleep paralysis. Neither one seems something to be overly concerned about. You do an excellent job of taking care of our dearest friend and internet star! If his episodes increase in frequency or time, then I would let your Vet know. In the meantime, just keep documenting as you do because that's invaluable information for Sherpa's Vet. Could you give him a "hi-five" for me and some extra pets?
@adde95063 жыл бұрын
It's not sleep paralysis. The operative word there being paralysis. I've had it, Sherpa certainly doesn't seem terrified. But it could be sleep walking. I think partial seizure is more likely and not anything to worry about right now.

Its great you two went back to the scene of the Scare. Get it out of the way, Sherp seemed fine! Regarding that episode, I'm almost sure those are absence seizures. If he only gets one a year it is nothing to investigate further. The only time it would be an emergency is if he keeps having them over and over in a day. Or if he gets them more frequent you might want to investigate further. Or if it starts like this but developes further into shaking and such then it needs attention.. If he had these from little it rules out doggy memory issues, since he is 12. But he is too active for that issue yet. You guys are the best!!!

Jamie, hearing your tale of woe about the glow plugs in your van if it were me I would seriously consider finding a new repair shop that has a specialist that works on diesel Ford van that or consider having you van serviced at a Ford dealership. I understand repair shops work a bit different in England than the US but I was a Automotive/Truck Technician for 25 years before a injury forced me to find a new line of work but I have never heard of a shop that works on engines in the vehicle that does not take off whatever body parts are necessary to do the job. That said I wish you the best with your van and hope you find out why Sherpa has developed that limp, and his disassociation spells. If he only occurs while he is sleeping I wonder if he is sleep walking, but if the occur while awake or asleep I wonder if he has a some form of epilepsy

Just before he passed he would go into blank phases. I was as if he was elsewhere. He died August 2019, one of the hardest days of my life. He was 13. I still miss him every day. His sister, a little maltipoo, was mourning him for weeks. Take good care of our Sherpa. He is loved by so many. ❤️🥰😘

He's such a sweet resilient boy, he's not going to let those horses ruin HIS moors. I understand about not wanting to give him too many pills, I feel the same about that with my boy. 💙🐕

When I walked my Aunty Ann's 3 English Staffordshire Terries in Epping Forest i used to always carry apples and carrots in my pocket just incase we saw a horse or pony....I give dogs, their treats and the horses their treats and that always kept the peace. Mind you this was in early 80's. Now I am just fan in Oakland, California. 🖤😎🖤

Not sure what I love more - the adorable dog or the amazing scenery.

It's such a shame that the horse attack has affected your walks and made you feel so anxious, I don't blame you though, I would be the same. Hopefully you will get your confidence back soon and be able to relax and enjoy your walks again! Hope Sherpa's limp gets better soon, bless him! 🐺💙

I wouldn't worry as much as you do. Dogs get old and get arthritis. They limp sometimes. We do too when we get old. When my old dog began to show signs of arthritis, my vet didn't prescribe fancy, expensive medicine, she told me to give her 1/2 a human aspirin in the morning before breakfast and in the evening with supper. It helped. Dogs wake up at night sometimes and check things out. The house is quiet, and they sense things you can't, their hearing is much better than yours. Sherpa is probably just listening, and trying to figure out what he hears. He is still half asleep probably, and so he appears the way he does.

It appears Sherpa heard a strange sound and is trying to find out what it is. He might by trying to fall asleep again afterwards.

My little furry child Cookie went out last Monday morning 22nd February and just never came back, her brother and my hearts are shattered into shards, he just doesn't know what to do and I can't explain it.

I think don't read too much into Sherpa's night behaviour. He looked like he needed to pass gas. He looks perfectly fine. Dogs sometimes do weird things. Love you Sherp

Sherpa, you are a brave Lord. Help your dad to be brave. You are good at taking care of your dad. Lots of hugs.

I don't think much of the second time. I think he was standing there wondering how to amuse himself. He didn't seem to be staring off into space. I foster for the SPCA. I had a kitten that had epileptic seizures. This looks nothing like that thankfully ❤️

Emma my 11.5 yo yellow lab is recovering from surgery and Hematoma in ear flap and some other things done. She takes same medicine as Sherpa for arthritis pain. Hope Sherpa feels better soon.

Sounds like Sherpa has occasional petite mal seizures..can present in humans as disoriented, confused for a minute or two, no convulsions.

My chow has been on Galliprant for years. It’s expensive here in the US but my chow was born with bad joints and it has kept her happy and mobile. And it doesn’t slowly kill the liver or kidneys like others NSAIDs.

Aww Sherpa, I hate to hear that he was attacked and that he goes through a dizzy spell, poor boy. We love our doggies so much it’s not nice when they are not well. Glad to see he had recovered tho. Bless him and bless you for being the best dad in the world ❤️🐾🐾🐾❤️❤️🥰😍
