Chain speed is key. The 5 series is probably pulling 2000 more rpm. Hence the 1 second advantage

Max RPM with no load is irrelevant, chain speed in the cut is what matters. The main difference between the cut speed in small wood like this is that 585 and 592 have very open mufflers, while the 288 has it way more restricted. That's it.

Thanks for the comparison. I'm looking at the kit 288 but holding off until a sale, just not worth it for $15 than the assembled saw. Going with the kit since I want to change out the P/C, take squish to .020 and port it while building the kit. Any issue's with your 288?

I think if you tweaked the carb a bit you could get the 288 to Rev higher and at least squeeze maybe a 1/2 more out of it . But to be honest the speed doesn't mean as much to this tired old body.
