Note: I posted a 2-year review here and talk about fixing a loose axe head.

Here are a few things you want to know about this axe.
1) These axes are hand forged in Sweden.
2) The head is 1.9lbs and weighs a total of 3lbs with a 26" hickory handle.
3) The consumer warranty for wooden axes is 90 days.

So true, we have a saying in sweden refarding our steel used for axes and knives: "Svenskt stål biter." it's actually from a poem about Charles XII but it has just stuck around since swedish steel is of a certain quality you don't really find anywhere else ^^

I have watched countless axe reviews nd I have to say this was probably the best review out of all of them. As it happens I could never bring myself to spend the money on a Gränsfors Bruk. I opted for the Husqvarna Forest mainly because it too is Swedish steel. For the price I found them I bought 4. One I use around my property and the other 3 are in my vehicles for emergency situations. This review really went a long way to assure me I made the right choice.

@@lycos100 for a some guys an axe is just a very versatile tool. Like you said cutting a fallen tree out of the road. To bust ice out of frozen water tanks or pond edges for livestock. Used as a hammer for repairs on fences, a handy axe finds many uses it was never really intended to be used for but works if it is what you have. Like delimbing bodies .

mine arrived today. I`m happy with it. Not bad as some reviews said. The wood came a bit coarse, nothing that just a 180 grit sand paper would not fix in 30 sec. The edge was as you said pretty wiry, tons of burr. But again nothing that a bit of sharpening and/or a strop would not fix in 2 min. After that, my edge was paper and hair cutting. The head looked a bit small, but that`s actually was what I was looking for. The fit of the handle on the head is ok, could be better, but I think its more than ok. blablabla It cost a fraction of what my GB cost me. I`m so happy.

I used to co-own a forest maintenance company. I've used saws and axes of all types extensively and yes, of course, your "strange" beaver technique caught my eye immediately. But I also saw that you were paying close attention to that bigger tree trunk barely moving, so I guess you're not that new to this and you know better than we all video watchers, the conditions of your forest. If you say your trees don't fall and you're comfortable leaning over the trunk to deliver your cuts, and you don't have girly hands that can't wrap around that handle properly, who in the world are these guys to question it?!?!? Swedish steel baby! 😁 The ammount of content you have just don't justify the low sub count you have, you are infomative and knowledgeable and hillarious at times just, just found your channel and after this video I'm subscribing directley. I'm from Sweden and have both Huswvarna and Gränsfors axes, personally I have a Hults Bruks axe in my camping backpack at all times, it is a superb little axe and has never let me down, I also carry it for sentimentsl values aswell, got it for my fifth borthday by my father who had it himself for 15 years or so before me so the axe itself is bushing 40+ years and is as sharp as ever. Used it growing up on weekends and holidays cutting branches of trees when my fsther took me out in the woods gsthering timber for him and his fsthers furniture making. A good quality axe will serve you for life and will most certainly be inherited by the ones who come after. Keep it up man I love your videos😁

Nice little axe. I was pleased to see that our methods of prep are very similar. I just rehandled a 2 1/2 lb Swedish made axe in a video that I have had for well over 20 years (maybe over 30 years) and I agree that the Swedes really know their stuff when it comes to this tool. There is something intrinsically pleasing about the song of the axe. Though I must admit, my Husqvarna 450e chain saw is a bit faster....lol.

I'm a chainsaw man as well but one day I forgot mine and I realized at the end of the day I had made just as much progress felling with my axe. By the time you fill gas and oil, pull start it, put it down ... chopping down these small trees is actually quicker for me with an axe. However, when it comes to bucking them up, yep, it's chainsaw time. I will admit my new battery powered Husqvarna thought is the best of both worlds. Toss it in a backpack, just push it on to start, and it's so quiet. Really becoming a little too dependent on it some days:)

Good find. Actually we got like 2-3 major (very old) "bruk" left here in Sweden - and i have, too found the Husqvarna as a very good alternative to Gränsfors. It is significally more affordable. VERY hard to find for the public citizen though, as they dont tend to advertise, or be known in the same way. It is commonly found at speciality hardware stores here. At least that is where i found it. I think it is Gränsfors major competitor, "Hultafors Bruk" who makes the Husqvarnas. I live ~45 minutes away from Gränsfors bruk. I went to visit last year in one of their open house/guided tour days. It is a beautiful place next to a creek. They also hold courses in smithing and is selling special models at site. All sorts of styles. Viking bearded and artful pieces. Amongst other things. You can smith an axe of your own in one of their several furnaces, but the regular ones is made with semi-modern machines. They sharpened my tomahawk i brought to their shop. Very impressed with its design, they were :) (CRKT Hogan Hawk) I am thinking of attending on one of their courses.... hmmm Beautiful cafe just nearby too... loved it. One of the last remaining bruks. Legacy ! But i think the Husqvarna is a superb bargain. Look up Hultafors if it is news to you. I got some really old axe from another really old Swedish bruk. Good stuff.

Wonderful review. FYI, these axes are made by Hults Bruk. So they are definitely handmade. So you were getting a top of the line axe for a third to a half of what you would normally pay. I like your idea of the wax. I do exactly the same thing to my blades. I also use an orbital sander at about 240 grit paper and I sand down the handle a bit as well as the top part of the cut so it doesn’t chip. However I use a fantastic tongue oil by milk paint company. Are use their outdoor defense tongue oil which has some nice natural additives which not only treat the wood, but protected from the elements. Again great video. Thank you.

Great review brother. Just like knives a good geometry and good steel is all you need... Yes the expensive ones are nice but if you work with your tools for many years ya move past the snobby opinions. Eventually in the end most honest people will admit its a 90% the same materials but that extra 10% is way cool and totally brand pride. Some folks get so snobby that they refuse to even look at a budget brand let alone use one and openly review it . You answered a huge question I had about the axe heads breaking THANK YOU ! I now can buy one and make it my own they look cool. After having a butt load of knives I ended up selling them all and I now use a $50 Gerber and $100 Ontario both are excellent. I will never spend $200 on a knife heck over $100 is even somewhat silly now to me. There is this all knives must be "super steel " club of folks who will never use their knives enough for that $300 to ever pay off BUT they feel good and own their cool knife LOL its cool i know that feeling well😂 I get it, ....brand pride is normal but it works with budget stuff to...I have pride in owning a Gerber Prodigy I've used it enough years to know its trustworthy and dang near unbreakable. A $45 knife with the right geometry and good heat treat will work just fine in my hands and I can sharpen it if it gets damaged with ease, but 99% of the time it only needs a good stropping on my belt. I do still think about buying a nice $200 LT Wright knife and I know those $200-$300 axes are no different for you axe loving folks. If ya can buy one I say have at it, cause its your money ain't nothing wrong with that. I just wish more people would stop being so dang brand blind and snobby to folks in the outdoor bush crafting community.

That sound you're hearing, and the difference between an axe like this (or a Gransfors Bruks or Hults Bruks axe) and most axes sold in the US, is the hardness and thickness differences. If you go to the hardware store and pick out an axe to use, most likely it's going to be very cheaply manufactured in China out of steel that's fairly soft. As a result, it's made very thick. If it were ground nice and lean like one of these axes, even a cheaper axe like the Husqvarna, it would deform or break when used. So, they tend to be great fat wedges, which gives them that dull sound, as does the softness of the metal. Everyone on youtube will give you a different opinion on which of these axes are better, and while the Gransfors Bruks and Hults Bruks will be ground more consistently, and the handles will be installed generally better, they're all miles better than what you could pick up at a hardware store in the states. With the Husqvarna, you just need to put in a bit of work to get the edge in good shape. You can get it all polished and consistent like a Gransfors axe, if you put in the time.

I own this axe and must say it arrived with the bit damaged from the sheath rivets. The sheath has no welt and where the leather is folded it cracked apart, all the way through, so I could poke my finger through the sheath. I tossed the sheath in the garbage and was able to fix the bit. I would like this axe much better with a decent sheath and 2"-4" longer handle. I always find myself grabbing the knob, wanting a bit more.

I'm using the same axe for about 6 months. Its generally good. Mine had a problem of loose head that I had to seat deeper on the shaft, and the edge wasn't so great as seen in this video so that I had to regrind. I just dont mind as these kind of jobs are part of using these tools.

Really interesting video, great to see the axe in action, although I'll admit, it's made me wish I could afford to buy one of my mentors Wilderness Axes to send to you to try out, I think you'd love it. I'll be sending him the link to this video right away! Also it was interesting to hear your thoughts of the "zing" of European axes compared to US axes, we've found a very similar thing with the US made hammers, a much duller THUD as opposed to the ring of a European hammer.. but actually they seem to move metal and hold up better! You can't beat Swedish steel for an axe though!

Take a guess who makes this axe? The grind is basic, this cuts the cost. £40.00 in the UK. Sand the top of the handle and finish the edge. The grain orientation is perfect. Wetterlings made some of the Gransfors bruks axes. Who bought them out. The same firm own Hultafors/Hults bruks and this axe is exactly the same as the Hultafors. I can buy 3 of these to the price of the Gransfors bruks. This has the same steel as all the axes mentioned. So why pay more for the name. I looked at a Hultafors axe 4 months ago and it has gone from £36 to £ 80. Husqvarna have stayed the same price. It is a brilliant axe. And if you flatten the top of the axe head guess what it looks like! Better edge shape for slicing into the wood. They leave enough timber in the handle so you can shape it to fit your hand. These are made for professionals in the trade. Not for posing on KZbin. These are made to use!

Wow i subrscribed on the spot. Im 12 and i love the outdoors. I live in the city but every sunday my fam goes to the beach or the woods and he make a fire and roast marshmallows. I just came back from a trip to my aunts house in a rural area for a week and when i came back the streets looked disgusting an everything looked ugly and dirty. The outdoors is fun and so buitiful. Just bought one. For anyone interested, apparently there was a hold up at the factory, I had to wait about 2 months for them to arrive. So from about Oct 2019 until I'm guessing about Oct 2020 the in-store stock is probably finished in a rush. The grind on mine is extremely rough and uneven, I don't mind but a lot of people would. Still a beautiful axe and nice to hold and swing.

Some questions: What specific kind of wax did you use? What about using boiled linseed oil for both the handle, the eye, and the metal axe head itself? Also, how would you compare this to the Gransfors Bruks Scandinavian Axe?

T Sizzle I use a wax called renaissance wax. I’m not really a fan if oil on my metal. It never really soaks in so in leaves oils stains on whatever it touches like inside my packs and I grip the head of the axe a lot. Gransfors puts a bit more care into the finish, packaging, and shipping but u pay for it. Metal wise I like both.

The logos are stamped but not that deep. I have 3 stamped Husqvarna axes for more than 3 years and no breaks yet.

These are made by Hults Bruk. The same group that owns them also owns Husqvarna. That’s why it feels so good. Hults Bruk and Grandfors bruk are arguably the top two swedish axe makers

Yeah, maybe once a year if it gets really dry and then I wax after. I wax more frequently depending on use.

The Swedes definitely have the upper hand on steel. I was just looking at the Husqvarna axes last week. I think I'm leaning towards the Husqvarna carpenter axe for camp and bushcraft. Might get both. Great review 👍

It's the Gransfors Bruk grinding stone. I use the course side if I have to do major work but usually just the fine side. It's a two in one stone.

I’m a professional moose hunting guide and I often use my axe for cutting bone, it’s amazing how long this axe holds an edge. Usually have to sharpen most axes after every kill, I can go a full season without sharpening the husky. And still make feather sticks. It’s amazing quality steel for the price.

I visited my uncle in Paraguay, he was leaving in the forest, in a tiny house and he chopped 4 hectares of that rain forest in 2 weeks, he was 56 years old, with a old axe and just charped it in the mornings, I think with a good chain saw I will take 6 months, some of those trees you hit and the axe just bauce back its hard wood.

Is the beaver chew method good? I saw a couple comments hating on it so I'm kind of on the fence. I'm only 13yo so I want a method that doesn't require a lot of work. Also, how do I get the tree to fall the direction I want it to? Great review tho, thanks

Shan Alman my little helper is 12. Because he’s only chopping small trees that he can lift, the beaver chew is a great method because you can push it the direction you want or pick it up and carry it out the direction you want if it’s hung up in the trees. I use it 75%of the time. If your talking bigger trees then you want a classic notch cut. I’d suggest practice with a notch , aiming the direction you want the tree to fall as much as you can and over time you learn when it’s worth the effort and when it’s not. More important that anything is don’t cut down big trees as you learn, and remember with dead wood the tops often break and fall down from above. So take it really slow. I rush in this video to prove a point but I shouldn’t have. That was dangerous and a bad example of how to fell a tree. Just take it safe and keep stepping back and assessing the tree and the lean. Good luck and play safe.

Shan Alman been thinking about this comment a lot and wanted to come back to it to make sure it was good advice. My methods aren’t always appreciated by others. My approach is often not by the book. To each there own I suppose. However, Have you heard of Paul Kirtky? He has lots of solid advice and also a video with TA Outdoors teaching axe skills. Paul is great at teaching safe methods. I’d suggest taking a look at what he has to offer. All the best. TT

Good review on that axe, might be good to have something between the GB wildlife hatchet I use for canoe camping and the felling axe I use for car camping. I bought a 13in or 15in Husqvarna around 2010-11 maybe and this is by no means a felling axe but I was just splitting rounds for a fire and the head snapped right off and was still lodged into the round which I was splitting a soft maple from my backyard tree, who knows maybe I had just gotten an older one that was still not sold prior to them resolving this issue or maybe some of them still do have this issue 🤷‍♂️ no way of knowing for sure but I will say that I had already put so much work into refining that little axe that it really was disappointing to say the least yet I found myself buying another one and it still is going strong today! For the $40 you spend you just simply cannot beat them and where else will you find a Swedish made axe so cheap?
