with the whole “no sympathetic male character” thing isn’t that kind of the point? this movie was about the lives of these women and cmon how many movies are solely based on and made by and star men. (but also there was that one guy towards the end that could be argued he was there for sympathy...who knows) I thought everyone in this film did an amazing job and it was a very moving and touching story.
@AlirioAguero25 жыл бұрын
As a man, I didn't see it as an issue in this particular film. It's because there weren't any front and center male characters to begin with. Also, most men featured here were their clients, men who actively go an pursuit the fun with working women. Most such men aren't exactly proper and society pillars. If the film threw their brothers / fathers / male co-workers in the mix and they were all less sympathetic than any of the girls... now that would be an issue for me.
@jomr42494 жыл бұрын
I think it matters because the reason the men AREN'T sympathetic is so the women don't look like completely horrible people in the movie lol, which honestly their actions are pretty horrible. It kind of sets a bad example for a younger female audience. It's like hey, what we are doing is female empowerment and its kinda toxic and crazy but whatever its sexy and cool! *quietly choosing to forget how it affects the mens life and how hypocritical is that stock brokers are supposed to be "greedy" but they are way more greedy lol

To be fair I think that the media at large wouldn't make complaints about shallow or negatively portrayed male characters in a film like this due to the current social/political landscape. Speaking of politics - it should be noted that regardless of ones personal leanings a balance is needed in society as there are so many of us all living together. That hasn't really happened so much in recent years and if things lean in one way more than another of course a reaction from the other side will be felt.

if a movie doesn't have a fleshed out female character, it's brushed aside like maybe it's just not relevant to the story. But if a movie is lacking a fleshed out male character, then suddenly the writers have failed. Stories can be told only by women, just as they can be told only by men. I'm not trying to call out Grace or anything like that. I just want to point out and acknowledge the double standard.

I wanted more of a build up without hitting the two hour mark. The guy who snitch on them felt like a real person but I disagree about the movie showing men in a bad light. Those wall street ppl were criminals and they weren't the center part of the story. If they did show sense of them men telling their stories I wouldn't feel bad. I haven't seen this film yet, but it seems like it has echoes of Anne Hathaway's two most recent films - The Hustle and Ocean's 8. Both films depict scheming women outwitting the blokes and prides female solidarity over finding a potential suitor.
