You discover there’s no amount of money that a job can offer to be a statistic in the divorce because you’re working all the time. Some businesses and some bosses and management just don’t understand that especially when they never worked a day in their life and they’re just pointing fingers giving orders. Keep the family happy keep the kids happy because they grow up and they’re gone faster than you ever can believe.

It’s true man, supermarket refrigeration ain’t for everyone. They’ve probably ruined more families than they’ve supported. For whatever it’s worth, your videos did the trade a solid. You were good at it and you’ll be missed.

Good move Rookie . Supermarket refrigeration is not for everyone. I mainly do light commercial refrigeration for restaurants, ice machines , and A/C . No need to sacrifice your time with the family . There’s plenty of $$ in light commercial , and residential HVAC . Good move . Stay positive!!!!

I hear you bro, I was a heavy diesel tech in the oil patch for years. The money was fantastic but the time away for weeks at a time was killing me. Started working for a large truck fleet and specialized in diagnostics and electronic controls and couldn’t be happier. I put my 8 in and go home, what happens after isn’t my problem.

Congrats man. I gave up full time business doing restaurant refrigeration after about 10 years. I couldnt take the 7 days a week on call anymore since I missed my first daughter growing up. Said it wouldnt happen with my youngest daughter. I miss it but now doing industrial ammonia refrigeration and only work 4 days a week 10 hour days. No on call. You can never get the time back with your kids.

Dan, how do I get into ammonia refrigeration? I was considering training at GCAP. I'm in South West Florida. Been doing refrigeration in the commercial side for a bit. Ammonia to me is like the gas of the gods. Always wanted to service that type of equipment
@Dan-ger82
@Dan-ger82 4 жыл бұрын
@@jakem117 I follow Jeremy William's on LinkedIn since he puts out great information. Honestly I interviewed for a general maintenance job and got bumped up into maintenance tech job after taking that test and passing. Did conveyors for about 2.5 years and decided I had enough of that. I was going try to get back into refrigeration work when the ammonia refrigeration job came open at a new distribution center near me (well 90 miles away but still drivable since I figure if its within 2 hours I'm used to it anyway from driving service truck that range). The ammonia refrigeration entry test was pretty easy where I work but I was only internal to pass it and we hired 3 other guys from outside with only 1 having any refrigeration experience at all. So just apply when you see one come up. Aldis, Walmart, Publix, Tropicana, etc all have refrigerated warehouses that are good place to start. I'm actually more so an ammonia operator at this point and working towards the service tech level since there is a few companies that do the service end but you have to be willing to travel since they are nationwide. I am happy with just being operator since 4 - 10 hour days and I'm done for week.

Yes, VRF/VRV is interesting...it helps to have some electronics knowledge when servicing them. Daikin claims they were the ones who invented it in the early '80s, but the technology has been around as long as VFDs have been in use in HVAC. York has been building chillers with VRF since the late '70s when drives big enough to control the huge AC motors in centrifugal chillers were first developed.

Totally understand you.. Supermarkets is never ending call. What you said is exactly why i don't work supermarkets.. Take care of your family and stay safe. And the reason the switch was turned off, is because the people that work at the supermarket think it's cold 2 work in there, so they switch it off and forgot all about it.

Totally get it, good for you bro, family first. I was a tech for about 12 years. One night before going back out on a restaurant call, I was telling my 3 year old at the time I was going back out to work. He said "why?" I said because daddy has to. But it made me think. I was getting burned out before that, and that was the last straw. Found a different job, almost the same pay, M-F, 8-5. Something to be said about being home with your fam.

Good to know your staying in the trade. There's always work for a working man. Some might criticize that your just not a worker or too soft but the reality is is that the trade is demanding. I did union jobs in the NYC metropolitan area. Money was good but it was time to move on to new experiences, left the local, the money and now I'm barely making a grand a month here in Argentina but I like it. Perhaps in the future we can do a live together in spanish. Stay safe out there, the united states is crazy right now. Suerte.

Sad, up here in New England I have been doing supermarkets since 1988. I m 59 years old and will be retiring in a year. Yes, it is getting too much for me. I made over 6 figures for last 10 years and the money is phenomenal, however, the job takes a toll on you. I did really well when I wore the younger mans clothes, and it didn’t bother me so much. But about time I reached age 52, I started realizing my days are numbered. Unfortunately, my company has a hard time drawing in young blood. As soon as they find out You have to answer a phone at 1 in the morning, they are out the door like a virgin on prom night

My dad did rack refrigeration for 30 years now. I did it for about 2 years and was out now I work on chillers and VAV and VRF and VFD big industrial commercial. Still get a lot of hours but nothing compared to before

I like that. Hopefully I can just do like 50-60 a week. I’ll be happy

That’s about the hours I put in. The only thing that sucks is winter time. In rack refrigeration it never stops. In industrial HVAC it does slow down alittle

I have a profesional question I have a Copeland semi hermetic compresor on a two door freezer and it’s the second time it breaks the suction line by the service valve any help is appreciated any idea how to reduce compressor vibration
@rookierefrigeration4357
@rookierefrigeration4357 4 жыл бұрын
You may need to check the compressor mounting. And also may need to install a vibration absorber. If all that is good make sure your compressor is not shaking because of internal damage.

Hopefully things work out for you. I know it's hard on a family when you gotta be on call. Hopefully not having a paycut in the process as well. I remember the days working construction and having a 72.5 hour paycheck after one week. Was great having that 600 dollars a week check but man on man does it wear on you. Did wonder a time or two if the bug caught you or you fell off a roof or something though. Good to see you are still kicking, I drive through DFW again to head towards Galveston on Feb 3rd or 4th. Closest I have been is Ardmore at Lake Murray, found a cell phone that survived being in the water over a year in one of those dry bags and was able to get it back to the owner which was cool. Anyway get some down time and things will work out. Once the kids are getting out of the house or no longer think you are the cool parent you can always get back into it if you really want to. Who knows though you might just love the HVAC stuff and have some workers of your own who have to deal with the on call stuff.
