Wish you could have illustrated more how the diaphragm itself functions as part of the regulator's role in providing gas flow to the appliance. (The only reference you make to it is "and of course, the diaphragm." ) For instance -what causes the diaphragm to 'inflate' or 'deflate' -how the position of the upper plate governs the valve's opening -what may cause the diaphragm to fail & consequence(s) of that

Sir, thanks for making the video. I have just installed a tankless water heater, and the county inspector where i live said that the regulator is missing freeze protection. I am not sure what he refers to. When I asked him for clarification, he said that there is a device that go into the vent. Can you please give me the proper name of the item that the inspector refers to. Thanks for your help.

How do you check the proper pressure coming out of your regulator

Turn on the fire on the range and adjust the level of flame desired.

The vent hole does not release a "controlled amount of gas to the outside" - it is how the valve is able adjust to variations ambient air pressure.

That vent only vent gas when the regulator diaphragm is ruptured nuh?

@@subaru0014 , that is one way but not the only way. Other ways would be a torn seat causing a creeping regulator, debris between the seat and orifice causing a creeping regulator, pilot loaded Regulators with a problematic sensing line or detached sensing line, water-logged regulator, say from flooding ( Which is becoming more common in the world today with global warming) & back pressure from a commercial pressure burner with a defective check valve. I'm sure there's more , these are some of the ones in my 35 years of experience I have dealt with.

I have a site that is going through regulators left and right 20 of them 1 on each rtu. It's getting ridiculous. Some have pressure to my furnace but when it fires it drops down to 0 or alot less. I have about 6 psi before the regulators. About 8" after. Anyone got any clue as to why im losing so many regulators im at my witts end.

I don't know where your at, but I worked for GE at one time, making bulbs before running HVAC for them...They claimed the Source pressure caused problems like your having...Fluctuations in delivered product, sometimes even air, and demonstrated it in classes...I'm thinking the Gas company has a problem, that's causing and costing you.

you didn't explain what the vent is for.

My understanding is the vent is needed to allow the diaphragm to move up and down without resistance. If the diaphragm fails gas will flow out of the vent.
