Wow, so its 7:30PM here in Milwaukee on a Friday and I'm leveling out an AC and straightening up the line set in an older system. Pumped the unit down, blah blah blah, and hooked up the vacuum pump. Now with my fieldpiece vacuum pump, it takes me literally 5-10 min to get down below 100 microns but this time it shot down to 400, so i went and finished up the small work, and when i came back it was at 800 microns. Trying every connection to no avail. Decide to watch your video and just when i was about to turn it off as i thought it was no help to me, BOOM!! the service valve on the high side needed to be tightened a smidgen more. 13 years in the HVAC/ELECTRICAL Field and im still learning things the hard way. But it works for me as ill never let it happen again. Now its at 63 microns!! Thanks a lot.

what do you think can be a problem while doing vacuum and having both high and low side connected, vacuum doesn't go under 1000 microns but when the low side is closed it goes to 400 and when i close the high side and open the low side doesn't go down under 800-1000 microns? both condenser and evaporator are new but lines are existing.

Hi Craig. Love your book and videos. I have a question about what to do when the evacuation procedure isn't performed correctly. Hopefully you can give me some much-needed guidance. I had 3 new name brand AC systems installed at my house yesterday by an HVAC dealer that is a “Certified Comfort Specialist” for this brand. While installing the second of three systems, I noticed that the technician only evacuated the system down to approximately 900 microns (as read on a vacuum gauge connected at the pump, not at a valve core removal tool as you recommend). When the gauge read 900 microns, he immediately shut off the pump and released the charge from the compressor into the system. I didn’t see him charge the first system, but I assume he did that one the same way. When he got to the third system, I challenged him (when he went to shut off the pump when the vacuum gauge was at 680 microns) and I showed him the manufacturer's installation instructions which say to "pump down to 350 microns, close off the valve to the pump, and check to see that the vacuum level doesn’t increase above 500 microns in 1 minute". He responded that they never do it that and that they only pump down to 500microns. When I pointed at the gauge reading 680 microns and said “that’s not 500 microns”, he didn’t say anything and just walked away. After waiting a while longer, he turned off the pump and charged the third system when the gauge was at 680 microns. So now I have 3 systems which weren’t properly evacuated and are likely contaminated with moisture (it was a very hot/humid day and the lines were left open for a long time during the installation). I’m wondering what should be done to correct the problem. This just happened yesterday and I have not contacted the owner of the company about the incorrect evacuation procedure yet since I don’t know what to ask him to do - how he should fix it. I don't expect the dealer to say anything but "it's not a problem". Hoping you can advise me on what, if anything, should be done. Thanks!

Mr service tech, I recovered Freon & vacuumed down an existing system. The unit did have a leak before and I found it out per my micron gauge since it wouldn’t pump under 1300 microns I fixed the leak it now goes down, 4:04 I pulled it down to 360 (per my testo micron gauge)as soon as I shut all the valves off the micron gauge rises rapidly. However I did the same procedure on standard gauges pumped it -30 left it over night and it didn’t rise at all. Could this be an issue with my system or with my micron gauge?

Hi. I'm using an SMAN480 and I have a question about the vacuum side. When I'm doing a vacuum hold decay test the SMAN displays the vacuum level as well as the change per minute. I would expect the change to be stable and gradually drop to 0 but on a unit I'm working on the vacuum is at let's 350 microns and the change keeps jumping. It varies between +2 and +18 and obviously the vacuum level continuously rises. Is it possible to determine whether it's a leak or refrigerant/moisture boiling off?

@@yonofui9682 if not installed properly it can be the culprit, but I'm referring to led light that should be on the CPU to indicate where or at what stage the malfunctioning is happening. Usually when it blinks it's indicating the problem by the number of blinks it blinks. Count the number of blinks than look at your service panel and see if you can match the number of blinks to the panel solution. It's should have a list of procedures to run through.

Check for clogged condensate drain or clogged tube on the pressure switch or the pressure switch itself maybe. A tech would really need to know more of the measurements and exactly where it stops working in the sequence of operation if its within the sequence or a short in the start wires, thanks!
