Guy I worked with had an energy audit done using the blower door method. Technician forgot to kill power to the furnace, and during the test the gas furnace kicks on. The negative pressure caused the flame to go the wrong way in the furnace, cooking all the wiring in the control section. To resolve the issue a new furnace was installed, billed to the energy audit company.

On those Carrier you want to look at the outdoor unit, I've seen a few rubouts of the discharge against the suction accumulator and where the discharge bends down to the bottom right where the puck protects it from rubbing out. The puck eventually vibrates to the side and it rubs against the bottom, I typically put a piece of hole strap screwed to the bottom.

I think the inverters within the last year have been better in those units, but prepare to replace the inverter within a few years. Otherwise those units are pretty tough, especially installed vertically. Also i say its usually better to have the extra 5 kw heat strip than to not have it if needed. I dont know how cool it gets in Cali, but in SW FL sometimes it does get down into the 30s. Great work! (If your system ends up having sweating issues because of the slow staging, theres a way to bypass the first few stages when temp outside is above a set temperature. In the settings its called high stage cool latch)

I have a 11 year old hitachi 18k btu with original inverter. Not a single part replaced except indoor blower motor and swing motors. This unit runs 8-12 hours a day in unforgiving indian summer. It runs fine even when outside temperature reach 49c . Also have a 72k btu panasonic vrf in my restaurant and that one is 4 year old , runs 12 hours a day . On all original parts. Regular maintenance is all you need. Clean the condenser once a year. Place them under a shead or at a corner where its cooler than ambient. Although you can't help much when it's 49c air temperature outside but you can atleast protect it from the sunlight. And Japanese stuff is generally well built although i had great service outof local cheap brands but they were not inverters but they did took some abuse. Like my grandma had a videocon 18k btu and she never got it maintained it ran for 15 years without being cleaned once. The the compressor fell out from the mounts due to rust. I have found inverters to be no less reliable than regular air cons. And the amount of money saved in energy outweighs the cost of pcb. All companies here provide decent warrenty. Japanese or Korean or Indian. All provide 5 years of warranty on pcb's. 10 years on compressor.

I wondered how to interpret those values actually. Here in Germany most new homes get a Blower Door Test, it is not mandatory (It might be by now following latest standards though), but you can get federal funding for energy efficiency above current standard, and to get this a test is required. I do not know the different values for all those different energy efficiency standards, but a new building without forced ventilation (a regular building here without any systems to exchange or treat inside air, you vent regularly by just opening a window. Also usually no air conditioning) the test result should not exceed an exchange of 3 times the building air volume per hour. This is why the volumentric plans for the building are important, as you have to now the air volume for comparison. Test is run at same pressurisation of 50 Pascal differential pressure. As soon as you have forced air exchange, which in most cases is not a central air handler, but small autmotaded heat exchanging ventilation fans per room, you really will find central air handlers with durctwork in larger and usually commercial buildings here. the value goes down to 1.5 exchanges per hour. If you spent the money on a high efficiency passive house, 0.6 is the maximum allowed. I am not so sure about the units used, but if I remember he got to 935 cfm. that is less than 27 m³. So either I got something wrong with the units, but just calculated the value for my 144 m² house (about 1550 square feet) and the allowed value for my house would be about just over 1000 m³ per hour... Either I got the documentation i found wrong or our required values surprisingly suck big time, but anyways, he really got a great value. Looking at how many different efficiency standards there are an how many progressions we had over the years, I guess I am simply looking at the wrong values or misinterpreting something early in the morning.

carrier infinity is very good however be sure to look at the factory solder joints in the outdoor unit I have installed several where they start to leak when we kick it on for the first time. Also personally I would have gone with a 2.5 ton for a worst case scenario day. Remember also that if you get the air handler installed and this winter decide its not making enough heat you can always get a 5kw heat strip and throw in it as well. 5kw generally only needs a double pole 30 amp breaker to power it and based on the system being small you should easily be able to get away with that size.

Uk massively oversize air conditioning. Always have. Do a proper heatload calc and see. Bedrooms for example rarely need more than a kw. (I understand a lack of 1-1.5kw splits) Most uk contractors start by saying "it's a 2.5kw in this room but oh better bung in a 3.5kw just to be sure.." Uk is nowhere near as humid as many parts of USA and Americans understand to remove moisture you need to run longer, you can't do that if it's oversized as you reach set point too quickly. Uk is obsessed with getting down to temp as quickly as possible as if that means it's a properly designed system. It's not.
@longhornchris5919 Жыл бұрын
@@richardbartlett6932 I do agree Richard. 5kW (1.5 tons I think) for kitchen / utility / breakfast room was installed and another 3.5 kW for living / dining room (another ton) and 2.5 kW for master bedroom (think that's 3/4 ton, I really can't get my head to work outside of metric measurements 😀) which is just ridiculous. The master bedroom is barely 1 Kw I reckon. The rule-of-thumb method was used as a load "calculation" and when I asked about the over-sizing, was told the units modulate down. Which they do. But in the shoulder months, they do suffer from poor humidity control. That said, when looked at for heating load sizing, it is far better. All a bit of a mess, though, as you say.

Why is is such a big issue to go up a size (from 2 to 2.5 ton i assume) if you get a multistage system? Most of the time you will be running on the lower stage except when it's very hot or very cold. When it is, if you're a oversized a bit the system can toggle between full and the lower stage rather than short cycling on and off. I'm very glad I installed a two stage infinity system over 10 years ago. Evaporator leaked aft 9.5 years but the coil was covered under warranty.

The 2 tons of cooling and heating load that you guys calculated are basically what the house continually either loses or gains based on heat transfer through leakage, insulation, etc. But, don't you need some excess cooling/heating to rapidly cool or heat the house after you've been away all day at work? Or you happen to like the house/bedrooms to be cool overnight in the winter and then quickly heat in the morning? Question is, how much excess capacity is appropriate for those scenarios?
@throttlebottle5906 Жыл бұрын
don't forget about other gains from more appliance usage than normal, or more humans than normal(parties/gatherings), people running in and out the doors. but you sure don't want to oversize too much or you wont dehumidify enough and it short cycles to death, although it's nowhere near as bad with modulating vfd equipment. silly example: you don't want to run a 1500HP vehicle to the corner store and back every five minutes. lol

This infinity system specifically has a wide range of speeds that it cools at depending on the demand. Its a completely variable speed unit, including the compressor. You can also schedule these units to cool off 30 minutes before you get home, or you can simply open your phone and turn it down a degree or 2 while coming home from work.
