10:15 The comment about not letting the smoke go into the system will likely go underappreciated by most people. It's very subtle, but actually speaks volumes about your level of professionalism and care for your customer. The simplest attitude towards it is "it'll be fine, it's just for a minute anyway" and that's essentially true, but it's still not a nice thing to do. The fact you thought about it enough to point it out in the video shows how much the customer's well-being is absolutely #1 in your mind. Kudos to you.

Having done HVAC demo for 10 years, I do appreciate this comment. We worked in both occupied and unoccupied buildings, so we always had to respect the people that were in those buildings. Most of our work was in school buildings (we did commercial HVAC), and a lot of our work was in summer or spring break when people generally weren't there.

Those Appion core tools actually are meant to be adjustable. Take some needle nose and lightly pinch the grabber end to make it a little tighter on your core. Test it on a loose core. When it’s adjusted right it will grab it every time. Unique to the Appion core tool. For a while I thought those tools were junk until I figured that out. Thanks for everything brother 🤙🏻

Good call on using the filter driers to recover. I myself use a lot of nitrogen while working on anything on the refrigerant side. Cheap insurance to ensure that any potential problems will not occur. I even use nitrogen while torching out components like driers, compressors, coils, etc, etc. When vacuuming down the system, it really pulls down quickly due to being dry. Another great video Chris. That piece that broke is the Oldham coupling

Those oldham couplings seem to break pretty often. Looks like they’d definitely be the weak point if that compressor managed to get liquid into the scroll set. The oldham coupling keeps the orbiting scroll from spinning relative to the fixed scroll. So if there was excessive force on that orbiting scroll due to liquid floodback or flooded starts, it would put a LOT of strain on that coupling as the orbiting scroll tries to rotate. If you imagine a pocket of liquid traveling through the scroll set, you can kind of visualize how it would try to force that orbiting scroll to turn instead of oscillate.

I really like that idea of using two filter dryers on recoveries like that to protect the manifold! On those core tools, i took a pair of pliers and pinched together one of the forks on the core removal bit so it grabs harder, but just one one of the ones I have. I use that one for any cores that are too loose for the normal removers so I don't have to blow them out and have them shoot out and hit some cook in the eye.

He will see this eventually but a while back he had a unit continually plug up, and ended up putting in quick change dryer. The large dryer is to save the new compressor of any junk the old one left in the lines

Those clogged filters were probably causing liquid to flood back to the compressor possibly. They did look pretty bad. That lack of preventive maintenance will get you. Great video Chris. Love the compressor tear down also.

100% correct. Protect the tools and they will protect you. I still am using my old digi cools and that’s because I do take good care of them. One day when they die I will up my game to the smans and field piece scale. I like the core removal tools have a magnetic top. I seen them sticking to the panel in the video. That’s neat!

I have found that when using the Appian core tools if you over tighten which is easily done that the gasket swells into the interior channel and it will not pull the core through I have started putting it on just barely enough to not leak pull the core and then I tighten it up a little for actually pulling refrigerant.

My friend's dishwasher keeps tripping a breaker when the latch is actuated to open or close the door. My theory is that when the panel had been taken off for service at some point, it had damaged/broken the watertight seal, and this let steam into this control board or something. The kicker is that the washer is popping either a completely separate breaker than the one it's on, or the entire house mains. They know it's the washer because it's repeatable. Fun stuff.

The fact its blowing such big breakers makes me think its either a motor feed or heating element feed is tripping especially if its the main breaker to the property. If it was a control board pulling that amount of amps to trip the main breaker it would be looking like an cremated pizza by now.

@@PantherSerpahin I should have noted this is a house across the pond in Poland, so I'm not exactly sure of the electrical standards there. It could be one of those ground fault interrupt breakers like they have in GB. A few milliamps from live to ground pops everything to prevent electric shock.

Why use your nice gauge manifold, instead of just hoses from the unit to the recovery machine? Looks like you have a running burn. Hope you can clean up that mess. Back in the day, we would cut the lines and flush everything out with R11. I’ve seen those terminals blow out and go thru the cabinet. You’re not even supposed to remove the plug or cover, with pressure in the system. You are one of the most competent and professional technicians I have seen on you tube.

45:56 I believe the contacts got old/used up and corroded, that then lead to a single or phasing or two phase is more what I believe, those two coils pulled way more current, there by over heating contact, molex plug, and windings from too much current draw.

The ring is called the Oldham Couping, simply keeps scroll piece from going to far out of "compliance". Scroll is design to allow a "small amount of liquid pass", when too much does the Oldham Coupling can break as it goes beyond its limits. Liquid going through scroll washes oil off leading to wear. Dirty filters of course could have partially led to some of its issues. As for acidic issue, all starts with moisture. You pulled a replacement F/D so that tech didn't follow proper practices and got moisture in the system. It is accelerated by heat which you have lots of along with condensers not maintained.

How would a roasted contactor cause a burn out?

@@Paulx589 Voltage drop. As the surface of the contacts become less and less "flat", the resistance increases, which creates heat. Heat will further burn & oxidize the contacts and you have a vicious circle. As the resistance increases, the available voltage to the compressor & fans is diminished, making it hard for them to get started. They will pull the starting currents for a longer period of time, creating more heat in the contactor & compressor... and so it goes.

Teardowns are great. I would say the cause was likely this broken ring from the scroll assembly. Would be interesting why this part breaks, it's the 2nd compressor where this part was broken (the other one locked up). Maybe it's just from wear or if you overload the compressor with too much head pressure... don't know. The wear marks inside the scroll could be from running with the broken ring, maybe not from flooded starts. And if metal pieces make it into the motor, damaging the windings, of course the motor will burn out badly.

Greetings from Greece. The flooding can be caused by plugged up air filters. If there isn't enough air flow, the evaporator doesn't remove enough heat from the refrigerant for it to change phase completely. Regarding additives, old timers used to use R-11 for serious "humidity infection" cases. Since it is now no longer available, there are some products that are used in similar circumstances, but I haven't used them on a running system, charged with oil and refrigerant. I used them only to clean the tubing, and purged the system thoroughly afterwards.

Chris, do you go back and pull the acid dryers? I had one boss that insisted on that. His thought was any acid in the system is now in the dryer and if the dryer breaks down the acid can go back in the system. I used to pipe a tee in somewhere with the tee looking down with a schrader on the bottom. Oil would collect in the tee and you can get an oil sample out of it

I bought my first Yellow Jacket Recovery Unit just around 15 years ago and my wholesaler told me to put a filter drier rig on the suction side of that Recovery Machine every time I used it. I did that and cleaned the screen on every recovery for about a year, but after that just cleaned the screen. Perhaps that wholesaler just wanted to make extra sales.

I do use filter dryers on the actual system whenever I can. The ductless mini split heat pumps I do now, I have only changed 2 compressors and there is very little room to add dryers inside the outdoor unit.

When I see a contactor like that I think of a tripping limit. LP. HP etc anything that will short cycle the compressor. And the equipment MFGs always skimp on contactor sizing

Which FieldPiece sman do you have, I love those gauges. I currently have the S550 testo, but I like the idea of the digital scale and Bluetooth back to the gauges. The testo has Bluetooth to the app but I don't know if the other Bluetooth devices will show on the gauges. Good work brother. Love the content!

I'm sorry, did you check your light setup? I have noticed thas one of the light sources is kinda of flashing. At 45:30 I can see it on package on of merch and notice jittering shadows on the wall. There's millions of pounds of r22 already made and waiting to be used. It will be used or destroyed when there's no market for it anymore. I'm a plumber from the UK and don't know anything about HVAC but I realy enjoy your videos.. just 1 question tho. You mentioned about cleaning out the pipes with nitrogen, I have seen other guys on KZbin put a bung in the pipework and blown in through the pipework with high pressure and in cleans the inside of the pipe.. would that work in this situation or is there to many places for the plug to get caught up in the pipework..? I guess that piece that broke off could easily have scraped off the winding insulation, causing arcing which could then slowly contaminate the oil and I guess it's only a matter of time before it somehow conducts to ground, which will then cause carbonization and a permanent grounding. Just my theory, feel free to pull it apart.

If you had to pull the charge out and swap compressor why not change the charge to a cheaper alternative gas?. 22 is getting expensive!!. Just curious.

I've had coworkers fuss about my taking the time to clean up and put away my tools at the conclusion of the job. Hope their lives are not as disorganized as their service vehicles.

How is the contaminated refrigerant disposed of since it can't be re-used?

it can be recycled by gas manufacturers in uk virgin r22 is banned only recycled r22 can be bought.

Use discardable gloves when handling burnt oil in compessor. The chemistry of burnt oils in compressors is unknown and may have toxic components involved. Besides that advice i missed your service videos.
