Im just done with school and starting next wendsday at a company doing mostly "store cooling" as we say in sweden. Like supernarkets, bigger and smaller. But it's VERY diffrent to watch your videos compare to the units we got over here in sweden. We got mostly CO2 in supermarkets nowdays, some R290 and some Other stuffs not updated. Talked to some guys at my practice and they Said the stuff they see in your videos is what we had over here 20 years ago. Im doing this career change pretty "late", im 32. I wonder what things are like further south in Europe, my understanding is that CO2 is a great solution for colder climates, but not so good for hot climates because refrigeration processes get more complex and less efficient when the working fluid goes supercritical

422D can be converted without changing the oil in some cases, Honeywell has information about it. For cuircuits 6tons and under you can use Diversitech superchange and go to 407C. I haven't used it yet but I do have a can on the truck to quickly change over a unit as a test comes summer.

Looks like its placed on a kitchen surface. Kitchen surfaces have to be washed and sanitized regularly. I don't think they are wise enough to not get chemicals into the stat but looks like to me its exactly what they did. What the funny thing is that it would cost too much money to have you pull back the thermostat wire and locate it to another surface which is probably more difficult and tedious that just replacing the stat every time it comes in contact with sanitizer. Maybe they don't do enough cleaning routines to the kitchen and this doesnt happen enough but when I worked in a kitchen, light switches that were washed all the time started to fail which you're not supposed to wash a switch but the cleaning process just lets moisture in there and it just destroys the electrical connections.

Chris, Totally agree with your call on this one. I have had no luck with helping customers out by topping them off to get them by while they decide on repairing unit. Time will go by cause it's working pretty good now by topping off 2 circuits and they won't repair it. Then another compressor will lay an egg and then you get called back out for no cool. The estimate will be even higher. So I agree with your decision. Make them repair it right 👍😉

A debate about pressure and temp. Excluding pressure drop created by piping, coils, etc. In the running mode, pressure does not drop between the hot gas and the inlet of the txv. I debated with people on this subject many many years ago. What they believed was because the condenser took heat away then the pressure would be dropped significantly after it went through the condenser coil and to the TXV.

I respectfully disagree with that unless you can tell me otherwise or help me understand that you do not want to measure subcooling off of the pressure reading on the discharge side. If the discharge pressure is 200 and the liquid pressure is 185 that's reflecting pressure drop. It's the 200 PSI that you want to grab the saturation temperature subtract that from your liquid line temperature to accurately get your subcooling number. Your thought? Maybe I totally misunderstood what was said
@hvacmisadventures
@hvacmisadventures 2 жыл бұрын
We use sub cooling to tell if we are sending a full line of liquid to the metering device. The liquid refrigerant is sub cooled below its saturated temperature. The discharge line is hot gas coming out of the compressor. It is a high temperature vapor - that is why we don't want to take measurement there. Sometimes you have to because there isn't always a pressure port on the liquid line

It should be completely phased out so R22 can't be manufactured or imported. There's still units like this one in the vid that are running R22. You can still use reclaimed or old-stock R22 (Which should cost a lot), retrofit the existing unit to a different gas or replace it entirely.

I've noticed that some packages unit don't always have liquid line service ports had a york that didn't have one. Would getting a temperature at the middle of the coil get you an accurate subcooling?
@hvacmisadventures
@hvacmisadventures 2 жыл бұрын
The ultimate way to tell if the system is properly charged in this case would be to "weigh in" or weigh the amount of refrigerant you remove from the system. What I usually do on RTU's with no liquid line port is make an educated estimate (guess lol). Generally speaking you'll see something like a 25-35 psi drop from the discharge line to the liquid line. So get your discharge line pressure and I usually subtract around 30 psi from it (we work on a lot of carrier roof tops) and then convert that to your sat temp. So if we have r-410a Discharge psi - 350 Estimated psi (for liquid line) - 320 Sat temp at 320 (r-410a) - 100.5 degrees Liquid line temp - 92 degrees 100.5 - 92 = 8.5 degrees of subcooling Please don't use this as an accurate # ... it just helps with diagnosis if you suspect charge problems Best to weigh the charge. If you are working on the unit and have the refrigerant out of it then add a port to the liquid line for future use. Edit to say: I said i usually subtract 30psi but I think the actual drop is usually less when I've checked my method on systems with both ports on discharge and liquid lines. Just be careful using this method. It can help a lot but I don't want someone to mistake it for an accurate reading

I grew up with site glasses and I think you said this was R22 and I never really used sub cooling very often I just checked the SG to see if it was low. So I am assuming that since circuit 3 has a low sub cooling that's why you're declaring low charge
@hvacmisadventures
@hvacmisadventures 2 жыл бұрын
I replied to you in another comment but respectfully it sounds like you're having some trouble with subcooling (sorry if I am not correct in saying that) - so let me see if I can help. Sub cooling is used to tell if we are sending a full line of liquid refrigerant to the metering device. Sub cooling happens in the condenser where the refrigerant condenses into a liquid and then cools below it's saturated temp. We use the sat temp - line temp to get subcooling. This system has a TXV which will regulate super heat if it is working properly - because of this we cannot use super heat to accurately tell if the system is properly charged because the TXV will try to regulate the super heat no matter the conditions. We can use super heat as a diagnostic tool and it should still be looked at but sub cooling can tell us if we are feeding the metering device properly. It is the temperature that the refrigerant "actually" is vs. what the temp "should be" according to the pressure (saturated temp). There is a pressure drop (as you were thinking in your other comment) because the refrigerant runs through the condenser first so due to the cooling and condensing of the refrigerant and the amount of space it has to travel it experiences the pressure drop. To measure sub cool we take the pressure at the liquid line (the sat temp that the refrigerant would be at) and the line temp (temp refrigerant is actually at - cooled below the sat temp) and subtract the 2 values. I hope this helps and doesn't come across as condescending. If you already knew this then hopefully it can help someone else!

In your video you said and the customer doesn't want us to spend of ton of time. And there is the absolutely number one problem in the universe. The nonsense you saw in the evaporator section is probably a result of the contractor being told By the owner don't spend a time on this thing get it in and get it running I don't give a hoot what it looks like cause I don't have to see it. My father-in-law told me once many many years ago when he would build RC airplanes and he said a good looking RC airplane is one that flies very very well. Same with equipment Because it reflects that you put care and time into what you're working on.

Sounds so fn typical....a company(in this vids case..a company is being paid to replace filters & clean coils) offers/will advertise "filter change & coil clean" BUT like in vid...coils are never touched....OR if they actually "cleaned the coils" it was just some quick half ass way & ultimately the coils aren't really clean.....

They should be replace a new unit. It would be getting worst and worst due to bad maintenance if they keep operate it.

The suckey thing is if they don't keep regular maintenance on the new unit it'll be just like this one in short order.

R404a has a gwp of 3922, just seem crazy to me to put such a horrible refrigerant into a leaking system to use for a trace gas for leak detection.

OK hang in here with me why are you going to mix nitrogen in? I can guess a few things one is when you mix the nitrogen with the refrigerant you then don't have to pull out the recovery machine. My thought was going to be if it leaked down to 0 then you don't need nitrogen. A simple pressure test should reveal with the refrigerant only should reveal where the leak is. Thirdly some argue you can find the leak faster with a higher pressure. My method just by putting in the refrigerator and I don't need to drag up the nitrogen tank. I'm getting old

Well since the lines are contaminated with ambient getting in why would you dump a bunch of good refrigerant in just to find a leak? Using trace amounts for the detector and nitrogen to boost pressure would be the best route
@jonathanlatimer9957
@jonathanlatimer9957 2 жыл бұрын
Also nitrogen can run higher pressure in the system and is an inert gas so once desired pressure is achieved to leak check the pressure wont fluctuate too much, also cost is a big factor a 55cu ft tank of nitrogen is $16 in CA.

@@russellbarnes7732 All good, kind sir!!! I've been in the field for a while for a 35 yr old, and I've now learned working for myself a little extra work to save the $$$ on pulling up nitro is worth it, helps towards building the invoice total too :)
