Same, it looks nice and if you've done everything perfectly they should all stay in sync. 4 or 5 belts running in sync looks nice.

One thing I have noticed is that alot of techs set the belts where they ride deep in the pulleys. Running belts that deep actually wears them out quicker. The topside of the belt should actually just be a “hair” below the top edge of the pulleys. Just a FYI. That was something that I was taught when we use to replace the belts on pumps.

A small piece of paper or insulation on the blower wheel will cause vibration . I usually spin the blower wheel and let the tip of my fingers touch the blower wheel and listen to the sound as it goes around and if one is loose it will have a different tone and you know the wheel is starting to come apart

I am constantly changing out failed blower wheels on those units due to the wheels having individual blades break off, then it gets out of balance and shakes itself to death. Of course if you're doing one wheel, you go ahead and bid two new wheels, a new shaft, new bearings, and new pulleys because every part of that blower system has to be cut apart. I don't bother trying to pull the shaft out at all since they are too rusty to budge. I just cut everything up with a grinder and rebuild the whole assembly. I dealt with a unit with a close wall just like that kitchen one, but I had just enough space to reach the back blower slot.

We have to appreciate the position of the customer as you point out. Just because we might be a bit anal and want everything about the unit to be perfect, no one wants to fork out the cash that it costs to do that. In this day and age these businesses are often times have a hard time making ends meet. Reasonable functionality is where it's at.

When you let it free to rotate, the blower wheel rotated on it's own, overshot, then came back to a preferred orientation - that means it is WAY out of balance, enough to overcome the friction of the bearings and the drag on the belt to force the heavy side down.

I learned very early on in my career that you can use a Tape Measure across the faces of the pulleys to align them. Now it’s not perfect by any means but it will get you in the ballpark and it’s a handy tool every tradesman owns. It’s whatever length you need it and it is as straight as the sheer that cut it at the factory. Also that blower vibrating, could be as simple as excess dirt on the wheel blades causing it to be out of balance, or one of the bearings worn out. Both of which would require dismantling part of the unit to get to.

Perhaps the fire inspection guys tested the alarms in the building by shooting some "fake smoke" into them - that's a test we have to have done once a year in the UK in commercial premises from memory. Usually they do it whilst the alarm system is in maintenance mode so it just alerts that they've triggered the detector, but if they did this on the building detectors and the AC pulled in enough of the fake smoke it may have been enough to trigger it.
@LadyAnuB
@LadyAnuB Жыл бұрын
As a former CA licensed fire alarm technician, I see that the "inspector" didn't reset the duct smoke detector after it passed. I would shoot "smoke" into the detection chamber to see if it would go off. If it did, great, it passed and I'd reset it if it had a reset button, otherwise the DSD was setup badly and needed to have it's detector head removed and put back. Your "maintenance" mode was a general purpose switch that was level 3 secured at the first company I worked for. It was labeled for the customer if they paid for it, if not, we technicians set it up for our use as it disabled all alarm outputs. For other companies panels we would find a button comparable to this or individually disable the output circuits.

Regarding the smoke detectors it depends on if they're photoelectric or ionization type detectors. Ionization detectors are going to be more sensitive to dust and dirt buildup. Get enough dust blowing through either type is going to cause nuisance tripping. In doing PMs on them we would run long bottle type brushes through the intake tube to clean out the dust. Many of the tubes would stick out the opposite side of the units with rubber plugs in. The plugs could be popped out and the brush run all the way through. It was sop to clean the tubes, and the inside of the housing as well as blowing out the sampling chamber of the detector. No need to pull out the tubes. From the looks of those detectors they have not been maintained. No, we didn't just buy new ones because we like new better than we like old. Always had to remember who's paying and what makes the most sense. Don't ever let the customer get the perception that we have some kind of 'fetish' for new.. They won't trust us once they realize this when we DO have a good case for buying new parts. It's the story of the boy who cried wolf.

I will say.....Lennox does make it easier to replace failed components. The compressors, boards, caps,relays etc etc are right there and easy to get to. Their evaps are a pain to get to and replace. Did one a year ago with a re-heat coil....it kinda sucked. Very pleased to see you use laser alignment, tach etc etc....thats the true professional way. I have a lot of these tools myself, if i don't....the company has it for use.....the rifht tools for the job can separate a good tech from a great tech. Thanks for your visual display of professionalism.

Next time you swap out a variable speed motor pulley, swap it for a fixed speed pulley so the belts can be alined better. Variable speeds are only for setting up the air flows and should be replaced once you know what size pulley is needed. I'm still trying to teach the office guys at work this 😅

I worked in resturants for years - those reach ins and drawers do get cleaned - just not very often because they are very hard to access and most resturants and workers don't have the proper tools or expertise to dismantel them, nor should they. They are just not setup for it. We would do it like once a year overnight and struggle to get it done before opening the next day

The unit with the vibration: Needs a massive cleaning and the belts and pulleys needed to be replaced. Three compressors, all functioning, 4 condenser motors, all good. I would hope that any customer would question the tens of thousands of dollars to replace a working unit. I take my car to the local garage with a leaky radiator. He says: That car is 20 years old. It needs to go to the crusher immediately and let me sell you a new one for $60,000 I respect how hard HVAC techs work, but it seems that the first response is always "you need a new unit"

Hear me out. I wasn’t exactly able to see how the magnet numbers were set up but for arguments sake I’ll say it’s …..-2,-1,0,1,2,3……. What if you used a caliper to quickly measure the thickness of each pulley figured out the difference and compensated that on the alignment. So instead of zero an aligned pulley based on the thickness of the pulleys that we measured would be -1 or 1 or something like that Hopefully I’m effectively conveying my thought

DSD's are not daisy-chained together. They are placed on the return air and exhaust air systems and only operate on those systems alone. You are allowed to change the smoke detectors in air handling units? As far as I understand fire alarm system stuff, licensed companies and technicians are the only ones allowed to do this in the state of CA. Changing them yourself opens you up to liability issues. I would recommend you don't touch them. Leave them to fire alarm companies as I suspect these are just fine in spite of the dirt in the AHU. Cleaning the sampling tubes should be done along with changing the filters. If they fail testing then the DSDs can be replaced but that's for a fire alarm company to deal with along with your company.
@HVACRVIDEOS
@HVACRVIDEOS Жыл бұрын
Yeah they actually can be, if you follow the instructions that the manufacturer send there is basically a way you can wire them to have a global shutdown between all the detectors in the building that way they power down all the indoor blowers when any one detector goes off... I will say daisy chain is not really the right term but my brain typically works a little different in that I say things in a way that I think people will better understand me.
@LadyAnuB
@LadyAnuB Жыл бұрын
@@HVACRVIDEOS Yeah, a fire alarm panel can and will trip a relay upon alarm that can send a signal to AHUs that can be used to shut them all down or do floor dependent stuff or other situations depending on the building(s). They can also interface to other systems like elevators, fire doors, stairwell doors, etc. (A concert pavilion I worked at had exit maps displayed to the audience upon alarm.) When this signal is sent, I make sure that the FACP is doing its thing first and then check on your stuff to see that it shuts down. If no shut down, it's time to do a wiring check and see that the signal is making it to the AHUs or tracking down where the issue lies in the wiring. (I've seen diode logic and software programming for this stuff.)
@HVACRVIDEOS
@HVACRVIDEOS Жыл бұрын
The detectors are capable of shutting down all the other detectors without the panel even being connected, there are so many different ways global shutdown can happen whether it be relays in the fire alarm panel.and or just using the detectors built in global shut down feature

I really don't have to explain nothing, Chris said people try to figure out what location he is working at on his videos, but if you guys want to get involved with that, that's on you, I'm not trolling anyone. I'm not going to explain every comment I make, when some of you guys like to attack me for some unknown reason.

@@johnwalker890 no one is attacking you. When you post a comment, expect people to comment back, that’s the purpose of the comments. It’s a community forum. I don’t know how you can perceive a question as an attack.
