This was a service call on a walk in cooler that was iced up, I found multiple problems with the system including a very dirty evaporator coil, and a refrigerant leak. Let me know what you think and please consider subscribing to my channel.

May be a stupid question. What’s a headmaster do?
@HVACRVIDEOS
@HVACRVIDEOS 5 жыл бұрын
Ashton not a stupid question at all simply put a headmaster or head pressure regulating valve backs up the refrigerant in the condenser to raise the head pressure in the system on really cold days when there is not enough heat in the ambient air at the condenser. The reason we do this is when its really cold outside and your condenser has that cold air going across it it lowers your condensing temperature and while most people think that is a good thing if the condensing temp goes too low it starts to affect the performance of the expansion valve and that causes the system to not operate correctly. So by flooding the condenser the head master helps to maintain a constant liquid temperature of 100 degrees going to your expansion valve. If you have time watch my new livestream that i did as I talk about the headmaster a little more kzbin.info/www/bejne/onPTkqKudtmGsNk

Headmaster is make keep head pressure above minimum level for refrigerant circulation.if headpressure is too low to push refrigerant through the expasion valve and then refrigerant will not enough to make cold air.

When you have a frozen evaportator, the low preassure is lower. There's no need to add refrigerant, defrost it and check again. You will surprise, greetings from refrigeration mechanic from Argentina. Long live R-22!

As a restaurant owner I'm starting to learn how to fix things myself or at least know enough to find a decent technician. Today I walked into my cooler and my refrigeration guy was defrosting with a torch. It's so hard to find decent service providers in this area. My hood vent has been working improperly for years and we were told "We don't know how this hoodvent works so if you want us to learn you're going to pay for our education" Sorry for venting. Thank you for the video.

Something I used to do with beer walkins. Put the temp controls bulb into the evaporator coil. That way the solenoid won't re energize until the coil goes above freezing. You need a temp control that has allot of differential so you can set cut out low enough to get proper box temp. The box temp will rise sometimes while it's defrosting but the beer usually stays cold enough ,not to be a problem. Boxes that get allot of new product at the same time have a tendency to freeze up trying to recover...this solves the problem. Defrost timers don't account for crazy swings in box demand.

Does the manager or you move the products that are underneath the evap when you go to do a service call such as that ? I can just imagine the surprise if the health inspector just happen to pop in unannounced 😲, with some of the open dairy products that was there, i.e. the open whip cream can and milk, as well as the alcohol products. Health concern? Just an observation. I would like to hear your take on that part involving food product safety concerns and the service techs responsibility in that situation. Thanks, Keep up the good work on your videos.

Loving your videos brother! Love how you're thorough with everything and really taking your time focusing on the task. I have to ask, for someone like myself who is about 6 months into running a HVAC business for myself, you seem to always be busy but take your time and relax. Do you get flooded with calls on a daily with service calls or are you steady that you allow the time for these jobs? Unless you're working 18 hours a day, your jobs seem so time consuming 😂

@@HVACRVIDEOS I've read about checking the receiver level this way. And I've tried it with my thermal imager while it's running and you can sometimes see the level. Generally after I clear the sight glass I'll try to calculate what the total charges was and add 10 or 15% which usually can be 3/4 to 1.5 lbs on these small units. The other thing I'll do while I'm pumping down is watch my head pressure and see if it starts Rising which can be an indication of running out of room in the reciever.

Coil does not ice up, defrost working, holds temp well. Talking with him, they remodeled a room recently and someone had put a 1" hole through the wall into the freezee box. The snowing started the next day after they sealed it. Hes going to set up a day that we can shut it down, remove everything and do a clean out. Well it is only money but don’t break your self.... they are pricey. We are into fall and cooler temps I’ll have to give it a whirl my self. I’d love to see you make a follow up video.

Why didn't you use a heat gun to thaw the coil?
@HVACRVIDEOS

I prefer to use a water hose because in my opinon it goes faster and it allows me to clean the coil at the same time, thanks for watching , I am going live on youtube tonight at 5:00pm pacific standard time come on over and check it out kzbin.info/www/bejne/onPTkqKudtmGsNk

And throws less heat into an already warm box

It takes the same amount of BTUs to thaw the ice no matter how you get them. It's just less water with a heat gun so you don't flood the drain. Something like a quartz radiant heater can focus heat on the coil.

Has anyone tried a small steam cleaner on these? The frozen coils I normally found were in air conditioner coils in furnaces when people didn't change the air filters often enough. It is easy to thaw those just by turning the system to heating. Maybe one of those steamers would both heat and clean.

Steam? Talk about btus added to the box. Makes no sense sorry. It only takes 144btus to bring 32* ice to 32* water. To create steam your using 970 additional btus on top of the 180 needed to first boil the water. I'll stick with 144btus and watch it go down the drain instead of the air.
