You did a really nice restoration of a well used gun mate. I was surprised at the power figures with the spacer considering the "shorter " mainspring. I have the same gun and it's probably as old as yours. I'm led to believe that the importers (hull cartridge company) used to have to cut a coil or two off the original spring to bring it in line with our silly 12ft-lb limit. I recently took mine to the gunsmiths for a service and all it needed was a clean and re lube and a new breach seal. The guy told me that it didn't need a new spring as it was still producing sub 12ft-lb with the new seal. I had mentioned wanting to fit something like a titan/ox mainspring but he warned that it would almost certainly make the gun produce more than legal power. Sadly I have nowhere legal to use the gun these days.

Apparently elsewhere in the world the 97 is about a 15 ft/lb gun. It's ludicrous that in the UK putting a couple of extra washers on the spring turns it into something that's considered to be the same category as a 308 rifle or semi-automatic 12 gauge!

That old spring is an OX spring

A few people have said that. Others have said it's definitely an original Weirhauch spring. I've no idea one way or the other. The gun was bought supposedly brand new from a reputable shop so who knows. Whatever it is, the V Mach spring in it now is definitely better.

How did you unthread the end, please?

The end that holds the piston in? That was a nightmare. I had to put the barrel in a vice, I clamped it in at the flat bit where the underlever pivot is located, padded with cotton cloths so I didn't damage it, then found a large spanner that wedged tightly into the channel for the piston sear, then I whacked the spanner with a mallet to crack the thread. It was tough. screwing it back together was basically the reverse. Good luck! I think mine was bad because it had never been unscrewed in 20 years. There are videos on KZbin of people unscrewing them by hand, so hopefully yours won't be too bab...

Hi. How did you clean the piston so it was nice n clean. I mean the breach that we see outside of the gun. If it's a tiny bit pitted how did you get it all off so it looks really smooth... Thanks in advance. Can I ask what you used to clean the Insides of the gun all the bits we don't see once the stocks back on.

stecartmel just sandpaper. Work your way down to a fine grade paper to get rust off and bring out the shine. If you want a really mirror finish use Autosol polish to finish it off.

stecartmel And a spray degreaser to get rid of old grease and gunk. Anything from Halfords would do
