Camping on a 2019 Harley Sportster 48
Just a shakedown on some updated camping gear. Most of the items are backpacking oriented so they are small and compact.
The main bag is a Biltwell Exfil 80.

Location was Ocean Cove Campground near Jenner, CA:

This just popped up... probably since I sold my giant 2017 M8 Limited and bought an old sportster and started watching sporty vids. I almost didn't watch as your bar position is just so crazy for me. I had 14 or 16" bars on my last 5 HDs. 35k miles (all touring, no commuting) in the past few years... I love to travel on the bike. Back when my wife could.. we did it together. Nowadays I just go alone. Prayer time and listening to the pipes. I'm in my 4th decade of street riding now at 55... I can't imagine not riding. I hope to still be riding at 100. Glad I did watch. You got a good story telling style and some cool places to ride and camp I'll more than likely never get to. I got a Sportster in 1989 - 2 days out of the army...rode it all OVER this country. Had bigger and bigger bikes since... lost the simple joy of a light bike, a backpack, and just taking it easy exploring. I'm back to that now with my sporty and mindset of just making some nice miles and smiles for myself. Enjoy your riding. I'll subscribe and check out some more.

Nice bike! I don't think I could do those bars for very long though. Maybe some 4" risers or so for the longer rides? The coast north of SF is so beautiful and this video is making me want to get back over there. Can't wait for spring! I first visited northern CA back in 1976. The US population was about 130 million less people back then and there weren't anywhere as many tourists either. I really miss those days of empty open roads and simpler times. Fortunately, I'm retired now so I can ride mid week when there are less people around. That Richmond bridge freaks me out too! The Benicia bridge and pretty much all high bridges, especially if they have low side railings. Going to check out all your videos. 👍

Awesome! Thanks for the comment! For the setup I’m using a GoPro 10 in the media mod, on a chin mount. Connected to that (also on outside of helmet) is the GoPro mic adapter. One end goes in GoPro media mod and the other has a 3.5 mm jack input. From that input I route a wired speaker to the inside Of the helmet where it’s taped near my mouth. Gives just enough motorcycle noise while getting clean audio with no wind. Another cool thing about the mic adapter is it also has a usb slot where you can plug in a portable battery pack (like one of those anker iPhone chargers). I keep that in my pocket and get get many hours of GoPro footage. If you do use a portable battery pack be sure to remove the GoPro battery and just use the external source or it will get too hot.

Amazing video.. Thanks for sharing. Question, I have an 08 sportster and I have not been on the highway. I have you ever been afraid of going on the freeway?
@KemDIY
@KemDIY 2 жыл бұрын
When I first got it, going on the freeway was intimidating. You get used to it. Also having a good heavy duty jacket helps keep the wind off you and makes you feel more in control. I’ve ridden this bike thousands of miles with winds etc. you get used to it. Oh also a good aerodynamic helmet REALLY helps a lot. Otherwise it can start to lift which is a disconcerting feeling.

Love the 48 looking into getting one myself just never rode forward controls plus how is that with those bars crouched over for long rides
@KemDIY
@KemDIY Жыл бұрын
Totally hear ya. I mean the sportster itself in any configuration is not a great long distance bike. And being crouched over can put strain on your back. But ya know I just had a different mindset. I took breaks and wasn’t in a rush to get to point b when on road trips. So if I needed a break I’d stop. But it’s not that bad to be honest. And bars are easy enough to change out. The forward controls were comfortable to me. I’m 5’10. If you are much shorter you may feel like your legs are gonna fall off.

Hey dude-nice video . Could I ask you what pipes you have and what or where did you get your gas tank. I have a 2020 48 which still has the peanut tank. Would like to get one size of yours. I like the sound of those pipes. Thanks for sharing your video!👍🏻
@KemDIY
@KemDIY Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Don! Glad you liked it. Let me tell you..those pipes sound 10 times better in person! Best mod I did. So deep and awesome. Unfortunately if you do the pipes you need the tuner as well. However both add some power to the bike. The pipes are Vance and Hines short shots. And the tuner was also V&H FP3 tuner. Yeah getting that 3 gallon tank made a lot of difference and I actually like how it looks. Made the bike feel beefier. And getting over 100 miles range was key. The peanut tanks are high value though so you could sell it to buy an aftermarket 3 gallon tank. Just make sure you get the one that works with EFI and not just a pet cock for carbureted engines.
@dondonovan9886
@dondonovan9886 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Kem for taking the time to answer. By the way, I assume you paid extra to have your tank painted. On another note, I’m considering a trip on mine from Charlotte, NC to Soux Falls, SD this summer to visit my sister. Your video convinced me it could be done. By the way, did you change out your rear shocks? Seems to be the thing to do. I used to live in Palmdale-grew up there. Nowadays I’m not feelin Ca. To live again.💲💲Ok man-be safe!👍🏻
@KemDIY
@KemDIY Жыл бұрын
@@dondonovan9886 no prob! I actually bought the 3 gallon tank second hand. The guy spent like 700 bucks to have it painted. Bought the painted tank for $600 shipped. Never had gas in it. I decided to do the tank liner procedure just to be safe. But tanks can be painted in expensively if you know someone or want to try yourself. Can get pretty good results. Can get them powder coated too which is inexpensive. Just need to make sure it doesn’t already have a tank liner in it or it can melt in the powder coat oven. I did change my rear shocks but it didn’t make much difference. Enjoy your ride!!

Nice video! Do you think the stock peanut tank would have survived the trip?
@KemDIY
@KemDIY Ай бұрын
I think it would have. But the issue is while it can hold 2 gallons or 80 miles worth you need to stop sooner unless you WANT to run it out of gas. So really you are stopping every 60 or 70 miles. When I had the peanut tank id also bring a red gas bottle which would hold a quarter gallon or 10 miles or so. So I could run it dry.

But you can get them unpainted and new here and other places. tcbros.com/products/efi-tank-for-sportsters-3-3-gal-with-screw-in-cap-bung?variant=41474361065665&currency=USD&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI477YzNWz_QIVCRCtBh39hQnBEAQYASABEgLjY_D_BwE Just make sure you get the EFI one and not the one for a carbureted bike.

Hey man, I’ve always wanted this bike as my first bike and I’m currently looking to buy one. And I’ve been planning on going on a roadtrip from Phoenix to San Diego. There’s long strips where theres no gas stations. Do you recommend this bike to go really ling distances (there being access to gas stations)
@KemDIY
@KemDIY Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s a good thing to consider. At most it’s 3 gallons or just over 100 miles. So you need at least 100 miles between stops. Most places across the US have stops within 100 miles. You can Cary small fuel cans but those 1 liter ones will only get you another 10 ish miles. So good for emergency but won’t extend your range much. If you are riding with a buddy who has a larger tank it may make sense to carry a siphon hose. So the bike we are taking about is NOT a good choice per se but if it’s your bike you make it work ya know?

It’s pieced together but I’ll tell you what it was the best mount I’ve ever used and 100% magnetic and never ever moved. Even with stiff suspension. On Amazon buy the following items (probably adds up to $50 bucks): (Buy) RAM 1" Ball, Handlebar, 0.75"-1" (medium size) (Buy)RAM Mounts RAP-B-201U-A Composite Double Socket Arm - Short Arm Compatible with B Size 1" Ball (Buy) RAM Mounts Ball Adapter with AMPS Plate RAM-B-347U with B Size 1" Ball On that last plate I mention add this adhesive backed magnet plate: (Buy)WixGear Rectangle Flat Stick On Dashboard Magnetic Car Mount Holder (it’s just a rectangular magnet) Also buy these thin metal plates which adhesive to your phone case (if you stack two of them the phone is super hard to get off the magnet which is perfect): (Buy) WixGear Mount Metal Plate with Adhesive for Magnetic Cradle-Less Mount - X4 Pack 2 Rectangle and 2 Round (Compatible with Magnetic mounts) (Black) You may find having a dedicated phone case for this is ideal as many people don’t want to add metal plates to their phone case. But they are paper thin and are fine in my opinion. Just be sure to use two of the thin plates on your phone. It makes the magnetic attraction even stronger. You’ll be surprised how hard it is to budge the phone off.

Only issue I see is the handlebars. Isn't that miserable being hunched over?
@KemDIY
@KemDIY Жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed this comment. Yes they were miserable!! No question. Although there were many other miserable aspects of using a sportster on long trips (stiff suspension, even after upgrading), no wind protection, limited range of ~100 miles (even after upgrading tank), etc. So at the end of the day it was more an around town bike. But I did enjoy my few longer trips even through comfort was seemingly not the main priority...

Correct it’s not the stock 2 gallon peanut tank that comes with the 48. I bought it aftermarket but it’s essentially the 3 gallon tank shape and size that comes on the iron or non 48 models. It’s also accentuated by the drag bars I’m sure. Making it look taller. They are easy to swap out which is great.

U have stock gas tank?
@KemDIY
@KemDIY 4 ай бұрын
It’s custom. The original tank on the 48 model is a small peanut tank (2 gallons). So I got this tank which is the stock size for the regular sportsters (3.2 gallon I think) and had it custom painted.

My Yamaha vStar doesn't have a shield, and I can normally stand about 3 hrs or so above 100kph before I need a break, but luckily that's about the range of a tank anyway. When on a long trip, that's also an incentive to take some of the back roads and stop at lookouts too.
