here's an overview on how i often use the akai s3kxl (or other samplers) in a hybrid workflow... working in and out of the box. pretty basic concepts, but maybe it will interest some people.

Great touch with adjusting the pitch in the sampler before sending back into Renoise. This is such an important step in capturing the full character of these machines.

I totally agree! The 3k is a perfect blend of 90s character and ease of use. Even chopping breaks on it isn’t that difficult… I think a lot of people assume you need to use recycle and an old scsi setup to get the most out of it… and you definitely don’t. Even just bouncing sounds back and forth can make samples sound lovely.

I love Rave Jungle Techno. The early breaks circa 90 to 93. After 95, it got faster and it was dope. I didn't really pay attention to it because it got into Synthpop at that time. Now I'm getting into it. N4 records, Bizzy, and your channel.

Great vid! Have you by chance done a sample comparison with Renoise interpolation set to "Linear" and using "Adjust" set the sample to 22050 16bit - wondering how aliasing of lower pitches sounds compared to 3000xl samples recorded at 22050... I tested with my mpc1000 and the aliasing was almost identical, however had to sample with mpc1000 at double speed to fake the sample rate since it's fixed and 44k.

hey there! thanks for checking it out :) i've messed with that stuff a bit over the years. in the mix... i don't think any casual/non-producer listener would be able to tell the difference between renoise and an s3kxl. if you throw in an external desk/mixer and some other outboard stuff, it'll start sounding more from that era in comparison though. that being said, i've listened to hundreds of songs that were made completely in the box that sound like they were made in the 90s... a comparison like you mention would be a good idea for a youtube short :D maybe i'll make one

About using VSTs vs. hardware, aren't there good plugin approximations for the various "famous" sampler sounds, that capture the ADC characteristics?

Heya! You can get pretty close with Decimort by D16, it has a number of vintage sampler presets. Then there’s Akaizer that will run on older OS’, you can get pretty much a perfect Akai time stretch from it. RX950 is an amazing plugin that emulates the S950 and it sounds awesome. So yup, you can definitely get these sounds in the box!

@@arcologies ha! How could I forget about the time stretching. Some might argue that that 90s sound also means pushing stuff through a Mackie mixer. :) Thanks, I'll check it those plugins!

@@hillie47 the mackie definitely had an impact on the sound too! thankfully, chris over at airwindows dsp made a few plugins that emulate that mackie sound in the box (and they sound amazing) :) they are free, check them out if you haven't yet!

Great tips! Sone very nice 90s style drum and bass pads there. I was making tunes back then and these sampling tips are good. Now you have DAWs which you can easily chop and loop samples and just drop them into a hardware sampler and have loads of fun! Here’s a free tip, if you’re after these sort of pads and don’t have a hardware sampler, camel audio audio player has some great pads. Not sure if it’s still available though but might be a download somewhere? 😅

Hey mate, im just curious what kinda situations youd wanna resample stuff through the s3000 after having already sampled it once?

heya! i have the filter and fx expansion cards on my s3k, so sometimes i'll bounce it out after i use one set of filters/eq/fx, then bounce it back in and apply a different set. i don't really do that very often though. if i'm looking into doing a bunch of resampling on a single sample, i would probably just keep everything in the sampler and sequence it in there. hope that answers your question :)

Pretty sure you can resample on the S3000XL.

I’m not aware of any. The only thing you can do is use the hard disk recording feature to resample, but the resulting file is recorded as a “take” on the hard drive and not a sample that is put back into ram.
