Second single from electronic heavy hitters Hybrid's forthcoming (sixth) studio album, and 'Nails' see's the duo stray into propulsive 4/4 territory.
Charlotte Truman's seemingly effortless delivery of an arena sized song is matched by co partner Mike's steady unfurling of sonic pyrotechnics throughout as 'Nails' builds to a pounding, but never overstated climax, full of melody, scale and ambition.

I discovered Hybrid in 2011 from some wingsuit flying video (song: Disappear Here). Beautiful electronics and gentle and emotional vocals are what caught me. Since then I listen to Hybrid when I travel or during work. It's not too emotional to distract and make you cry, not too monotone to be annoying, and not too light or too heavy, it's perfect! And it's really masterfully composed, so every time I listen to it it feels fresh and entertaining! Love you! ❤

This is amazing. I love the fact that there is musicians who do what they want and not what is trendy. Morning Sci-Fi and I choose Noise were also all time great up there with the likes of Daft Punk and Orbital. How you go from a run of output on that level of quality to the washed out recent stuff I don't understand. It's very dissappointing. Was listening to "disappear here" album recently, made me think for some reason of kosheen damage album, which defo had some great moments. There's this thing where people say things like..this should be a "Bond" track. I don't really see that as a compliment...to me that just shouts generic. It's a bit like way out West "Tuesday maybe" album which I was listening to recently. You can't compare it to early stuff like "don't look now." Same between disappear here and e.g. wide angle. There was a sound and creativity so many artists had in the late 90's and a journey the album's somehow took you on that I just don't feel now with so many electronic artists...tracks and albums often seem Lazer tuned and honed but just rarely have the same hook or ability to suprise somehow. Anyway, hybrid, you're still brilliant, I wish I had as much talent in my entire body as you do in a little toe...but, and not through rose tinted glasses, it's just not quite like the good 'ol days!!!!

Your example of 'Tuesday Maybe' is an excellent analogy. I'm sad to say I agree in both cases - I consider Hybrid's, Way out West's, Unkle's etc output from the 90s/00s to be absolute top of the game stuff, but as time has gone on they've all deviated into new stylistic territories and I find myself sadly less excited. Now, it is of course a band's perogative to push boundaries and explore whatever the hell they want to - they've earned that right. But I'm personally disappointed not to be hearing music that I would consider on par with Morning Sci Fi or even I choose Noise. Still, I console myself with the fact that those albums exist in the first place, and it seems Hybrid are picking up new fans with their new direction so I'm happy for them.

@@martynwarren920 think we're on the same page. Thanks for reading my post, nice to have your validation of my thoughts Martyn! My concern is the pushing of "boundaries" you speak of. It seems to me with these artists, including unkle as you mentioned, there was a massive pool of historical musical influence upon which they would draw...from classical to jazz to rock etc. etc. but there was tech inovation combined with an appreciation of music of all genres past and present that fuelled their creativity. I have a feeling that always being a student of your craft, however well heeled you may be is important and there seems to be much "integrity" lost rather than boundaries being "pushed" with such great outfits as hybrid. Quite liked listening to maribou state recently... There are a few lesser known artists out there doing there own thing who'll hopefully push to the fore but like you say; hybrids put some amazing stuff out there and we'll always ❤️ them for it of course! @@christianb3409 for me (and this is a purely personal and subjective viewpoint) whenever I feel a band is moving more towards 'pop' or more traditional song structures I lose interest. So I'll always prefer tracks like Higher than a Skyscraper or Just for Today over anything off the past couple of albums. But many others will likely hold the opposite view, of course. These days I'm really enjoying artists like Jon Hopkins, Throwing Snow and Nils Frahm.

couldn't agree more. been a fan ever since listening to their Cham Jam performance... but I believe this new direction / approach isn't very much in line with that their label reads. had, and still am having a blast from all their past releases and mixes - www.hybridized.org/ is a must for all newcomers to Hybrid - but I feel we'll soon be parting ways. which is a pity - or at least this is how I feel about it :/
