Thanks for making this video. Great comparison. Lets me see what to expect. Want to put the 240 in my 55 long tank now. Just want a gentle current.

I have one tip. Purchase a few handfuls of small driftwood to stack up like a bush of pricker bush. Aim the powerhead right at the pile. Keep tweaking the direction until the desired is achieved. Think of it this way...if you had a box fan on the floor and it was bothering you on high, then keep it on high but aim it at a laundry basket or the kitchen table full of chairs to disturb the big push of air. Remember the PUSH is still high as desired, but the output is naturally diverted without choking off the output.

Thanks for this! Too many reviews on Amazon complaining about too low flow with the 240, but those reviews mainly focus on their REEF tanks, and not freshwater. Assuming salt water has a higher density than fresh, it's not gonna move it as efficiently. Not enough reviews on planted tanks for me to make a solid determination, but this vid helped me do so!

This is great. Was going to get two 240s for my 20g nano reef tank. Will settle for one. Thank you for this video.

Well done, thanks Mike. I was researching the identical options tonight and there was your video. I'm going to get the 240 based on your review.

This helped me decide between the two. Thanks for the comparison, great job.

David Brue glad it helped you out. Definitely play with the location. You'll also notice once your plants get bigger you might need to adjust it to get the flow you want. I have a pretty big water wisteria growing in, so I had to move it slightly. Good luck!

I was using an Aqueon 500 which seems to be a lot smaller size (physically) than this Hydor. It is also rated for 500 gallons (hence it's name - Aqueon 500) but when I installed it in my 55 it barely moved the water. It was also extremely noisy as well! ( ...it sounded like a rather loud electrical hum + vibration) When I removed it from the aquarium and plugged it into a power outlet it sounded like a bunch gears grinding.. I appreciate your video review on this HYDOR but it would be great if we could actually get an audio sound on it as well.
@miketobin26745 жыл бұрын
Willi Billi Thank you for the comment. These power heads literally make ZERO sound. Either size. I would recommend the 425 for a 55 gal.. but that depends on how much flow you have with your filter and what your goals are. Typically, if you’re in a high tech tank, you want 10x the turnover per hour. For a 55 gal, you want 550 gph flow.
@willparsons325 жыл бұрын
The aquarium (I should have mentioned earlier!) has 4-5 live plants (I only use live) and One Tiger Oscar, A Sailfin Pleco and a Blood Red Parrot in it. I currently have three filters running on it. Two are the Fluval series - 406 & 306. The other is a Marineland 400 Bio-Wheel which I plan on removing once the 306 has become established as it was only added to the aquarium just over a month ago. I also plan on adding more flora as time goes on. SOOOO!! After that all said, which one would you suggest now that I have given more detail of my system? Thanks in advance! I should also mention that I'd prefer the magnetic "hold-on" type however, the aquarium glass is 10mm (3/8") thick.
@etyrnal2 жыл бұрын
exactly what i need. small as possible, keeps water moving, but doesn't blow nano fish all over the place. too bad it's discontinued. Wish they'd make it magnetic and give it 180 degrees swivel tho.

Got a 240 for my 12 gallon nano. Should have listened to the guy on my left shoulder who was saying go for the 425. Water movement way lower than expected. My pulsing xenia laughed at me. Probably more suited for a 5 gallon or so.
@miketobin26747 жыл бұрын
Barry Hutchinson this is meant to give additional water flow, not be your main source. A 240 plus you pump is too much if you have fish in there.. unless you're doing salt water. If you're doing freshwater, you're going to see your fish getting blown all over the tank
@barryhutchinson39777 жыл бұрын
Salt water, no fish, just corals. Have two other pumps, got the 240 just for my pulsing xenia. The flow is hardly moving them.
@miketobin26747 жыл бұрын
Barry Hutchinson that makes sense. Hydor makes pumps that are stronger for saltwater. But I agree, the 425 for saltwater would be better

Would the 240 work for a freshwater 12 gallon? if not does anyone know of a pump that would work that isn't way to expensive?
@miketobin26744 жыл бұрын
Caleb Houweling definitely would not recommend it for a 12 gallon. It’s too strong.. unless it’s a salt water tank. A standard hang on the back filter will be plenty of flow for a 12 gallon.

Hello, what is the name of the plant in the middle of the aquarium ? ( not the one who are on the driftwood ) Thanks
@miketobin26744 жыл бұрын
fr0gy that is Rotala. There’s lots of different species, but all do well! I want to say this one is rotundafolia. Super easy to keep. Also, look at Bacopa, that’s another easy stem plant

Very interesting vid. I enjoyed watching! Are those adjustable? Can you lessen the flow, or are they full blast all the time? Thank you for sharing!
@miketobin26745 жыл бұрын
Jose Montalvo they just have one speed unfortunately. You can lessen by where you put them or by shooting them at a piece of drift wood. Neither are insanely strong though. Thanks for watching!

Do you think the 425 would be good for a 40 gallon breeder?
@miketobin26745 жыл бұрын
Roger Rios I think the 45 would be good, but it depends on what you’re doing with the tank and how much flow your filter provides. 5-10x the water turn over is the sweet spot for growing plants and having good circulation. But if you’re actually breeding, it might be too much flow
@Aquaman-wy3mg6 жыл бұрын
Amazing video. I was torn between the two. You think the 240 is better for my 40g? Seems like it’ll be better overall. Any thoughts on the smart controller Hydor has?
@miketobin26746 жыл бұрын
CHRISTOPHER FLORES the 240 is probably sufficient. Just depends on how much flow you have on your filter. I haven’t used any other hydor devices, so I couldn’t comment. I just use a standard timer.
@mpwall1237 жыл бұрын
My god, I swear, my tank is close in size to yours and contains pretty close to what you have. I was researching power heads and your video fell into my lap. I didn’t know anything about them or what size to get. I got a 45 gallon 38 inches long by 12 wide and I’m after surface agitation with my canister filter. I don’t want the sound associated with a spray bar. I too got 2 powder blues that chase each other around like yours, 6 neon tetras, 6 cherry barbs, and 6 zebra danios. I gotta well grown wisteria plant, and amazon sword. After watching your video, I went out and bought the cheaper 240 with no hesitation. I didn’t want it over powering like you pointed out. Just put it in, positioned it tragically. Though the plants are bouncing around a bit, fish are playing in it, and they have lots of areas on top or close to the top to chill out, as well as all of the bottom. Magnet on the outside makes it easy to reposition when water level drops or rises. Thanks for the review, thumbs up and subscribe added

Why not use the wave maker to control flow and reduce speed on the 425? Just the cost I suppose.
@bjschofied16 жыл бұрын
Do you think the 425 would still be to much for a 55 gallon or will the 240 be sufficient?
@miketobin26746 жыл бұрын
Brandon Schofield it depends on what your filter is putting out. If you have a heavily planted tank I would put at least 10x the flow (so for your 55 gal, would be 550 gph for flow). Look at what your filter puts out and then add the 425 hydor to it and see if you’re around the 550gph mark. Ultimately, the more flow the better, but I would also look at your fish and your plants to see if it looks like too much flow.
@bjschofied16 жыл бұрын
I have 2 penguin 350's so I should be more than good flow wise based on the formula you suggested. I have 2 decent sized native fish but only 3 amazon swords for plants. I was just thinking the circulation pump would be good to make a gentile current.
@miketobin26746 жыл бұрын
Brandon Schofield oh ok, ya, that’s probably plenty of flow. That’s based off of ADU Aquascaping’s KZbin channel. If the fish are doing well and you want more flow, I would recommend the 240 then just to not over do it
@ronplucksstrings71125 жыл бұрын
I have the HK425 in a 55G, in what I would call a medium density decorated, low biostocked tank, and find the flow to be fine and not excessive. I'd say it's a good combination. Pump is located near top rear of tank, at the same side filter is on, pointing across the tank, and lightly downward, so there is some surface agitation...filter is a HOB Emperor 400, so that adds a bit of circulation and surface agitation also, and tank fill level is right to the upper frame so that surface is not visible from in front of tank, this makes it so that filter outflow runs silently along surface, because there is no drop to the surface. Cheers
