I’m in my second season of training my snowball viburnum. This was so helpful! As soon as I finished the video I went back outside and made a few more cuts to mine!

Jim, you have so much good content. It would be great for an editor to piece together multiple videos to see the process over time in one video. For example, all of your hydrangea tree form videos. Or, for your plant specific videos, how they look in spring/summer/fall/winter.

Jim, thank you! Do you have a video of making a shrub like the ones you showed into multi trunked small trees while they are still young? I’ve seen the Lilac video but hoping to find a video for a shrub/bush to multi trunk small tree starting off in a three gallon pot. Plant is snowball viburnum.

Second the motion. I have an Amelanchier alnifolia that I want to train into a small multi trunk to keep in a container. The container I have it in is about 3 gallons. I planted it in there from a one gallon nursery pot last spring but I haven't started training it yet.

Okay ~ I just re-watched this video... crying because I will need to go back to my tree and cut the way you did. It has to be done since I am trying to make my Snowball into a tree for the space it is in. It sure does seem brutal but it MUST be done. You are an excellent teacher but I must follow the teacher for the same success I am trying to achieve.

When the branches are so thin and weak, would you consider removing the flower buds for the first few years, to avoid the branches breaking when rains soak the big flowers.

These pruning videos are so helpful. Second year in the ground for my native fringe & serviceberry trees and they have exploded with new growth this spring. I’m keeping a multi trunk form with both but now I know where to focus my pruning. Thank you!

I just planted a Temple of Bloom Heptacodium that will be tree forming into a multi trunk so this video came handy. I also have young viburnums and hydrangeas that I can do this too as well but I need to make sure that I don't end up turning every shrub into trees 😁

I have been wanting to ensure my newly planted cornus florida stays single trunk tree form. Its only 6 ft tall. I figure let it grow more then prune. I dont know. I see alot of multi trunk dogwoods here. I am in control you say, but i sure have given several shrubs some pretty bad "hair cuts". Thanks for the video, will save to try your method. Need to tree form my eastern snowball viburnam.

Hi Jim, can you only limb up fairly young shrubs, especially from the bottom? I have a Chinese snowball that is a few years old. It’s quite big, but I’d love to under plant it. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation as to why you are cutting it the way that you are!

I’m in the Netherlands and started tree-forming a paniculata, inspired by your earlier videos. I pruned some dead wood at the top of the main stem and as expected it branched into 3. However I would like to raise the main stem a little more, from about 2 feet to 3 feet. To achieve this, should I stake one of the 3 outward branches and make it a part of the main stem?
