@@valhallamcgaughey3720 I planted four last Fall and although they’re not at their best due to these consistent 100+ temperatures we’ve been having, they performed beautifully after leafing out this Spring. My Oakleaf is in bloom and the others are hanging in there. I also fed them this Spring and Summer with an Azalea/Rhododendron/Camellia food.

Would hydrangeas do well in a self watering container? I had planned on using one for a Bobo hydrangea bc we go away and it may not get watered. I would also use mulch to assist with soil retention but i am concerned the plant won’t like this set up if it doesn’t like wet feet. Or maybe the containers ability to stay evenly moist will be perfect? Your thoughts are most wanted! Excellent video.
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 3 жыл бұрын
This is a great question! I would have some reservations about this because of a few reasons - if it rains there is a high possibility that the plant would get overwatered in the container; it also cannot be overwintered in a self-watering container as it would freeze the pot. Here is an article that talks about planting hydrangeas in containers and mentions using self-watering containers, www.provenwinners.com/learn/container-gardening/how-grow-hydrangeas-containers I hope this helps and please reach out if you have other questions or would like more clarification.

Very informative video. Thanks for the tutorial. My question: For the reblooming Hydrangeas, do you have to remove the flower heads for them to rebloom?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! No, it isn't necessary to remove the older flower heads for them to rebloom. Reblooming hydrangeas produce flowers on both old and new wood - you should only need to prune out a few (if any) dead branches in the spring once the plant starts to leaf out. :)

I know you said not to amend the soil but I live in Georgia. Clay soil. Does that stand true fpr clay soil? Also I just got a purple hydrangea. Will it stay purple in acidic soil?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that still holds true for clay soil. You want to plant in the native soil as it will ensure you aren't creating any drainage issues. Here's a helpful article we created on this topic, www.provenwinners.com/learn/how-plant/should-you-amend-your-soil-when-you-plant Generally speaking, acidic soil, with a pH lower than 6.0, yields blue or lavender-blue hydrangea blooms. Coloration can depend on the type of hydrangea but if yours is already purple and in acidic soil then you should be just fine. It's always a good idea to test your soil to ensure that you don't need to amend it in order to keep the purple coloration. I hope this helps!

@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice Жыл бұрын
Annabelle hydrangeas are Smooth hydrangeas so you cannot change the color by amending the soil, that only applies to Bigleaf and Mountain hydrangeas. For Smooth hydrangeas like yours, it's a good idea to prune the plant back around 1/3 of its total size in late winter/early spring ☺

I just bought my first 2 hydrangea. Blue endless summer. After planting should I be adding that acidity stuff you were talking about to get those blooms blue, or will they already come out blue since this is what it already is ??? I Dnt mind of I have to get something to add , I really want them to be beautiful. Although I doupt I'll get anything this first year they are prob only about 1 ft it the nursery pots so I'm guessing it will take a year to bloom....? Is this correct ?

Thank you for the kind feedback! The main difference between Wee Bit Grumpy and Wee Bit Giddy is that Wee Bit Giddy has better reblooming capabilities. Another difference between them is their color profiles - Grumpy will get a deeper purple color (when soil is amended).

@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane

@@pwcolorchoice Hmmm... I'm a little skeptical because I have the Endless Summer ones and they said zone 4 too, but they don't bloom half the time. I looked at the speck sheet down at the bottom of the link you provided and it says zones 5-9, so not sure why it says zone 4 on that first page? I'm in central Michigan and we've gotten down to -22°F here and our growing season is pretty short, so plants need to be pretty tough. Could it be true? Could there really be a blue hydrangea that not just survives, but CONSISTANTLY blooms in zone 4? And fall foliage too? I'm curious, but have my guard up! 🤔
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 3 жыл бұрын
@@SweetStuffOnMonarchLane Yeah I get what you mean! Most of those types of hydrangeas will survive in zone 4, however they won't bloom well. The reason we position this hydrangea as a zone 4 is because it will have bud sets that are lower on the plant and more protected against the winter cold so it will have more blooms than other varieties.

What if your soil is clay soil, or mostly chert. Do you still advise to not amend the soil with composte, potting soil, soil conditioner or sand.
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice Жыл бұрын
Great question! Clay soil can definitely be difficult for people to work in, but for the roots of most shrubs, it’s really not that challenging, and no special concessions need to be made. Often, amending clay soil will result in a phenomenon called "the Bathtub Effect," this most commonly happens with clay soil as it has the smallest spaces between its particles, it’s also the soil that people are most likely to amend. If you do choose to amend your soil, do your best to thoroughly mix your chosen amendment with your natural soil and the backfill before planting. By intermixing the two media, you can “break the bathtub,” however, this truly isn’t necessary. All your new shrub really needs to reach its full potential is the right amount of water, sunshine, and time. ☺

I want to like hydrangeas but I do not have good luck with them. I do everything I'm suppose to do, but mine stay weak. I'm in zone 5b and I have 9 PW Little Limettas.

By stay weak do you mean the stem strength of the plants?

@@pwcolorchoice may entail that as well. The plants themselves grow but not healthy. They are poor/thin in structure. If reply, could you please push like button so I will be informed of your reply. Thank you :)

So what if i want to buy one of your standard form tree Hydrangeas, but i want it in a pot on my terrace, in the city. Which type of dirt do I buy? (anyone know the answer? I would gratefully appreciate any help.)
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 жыл бұрын
You'll buy some potting soil! It'll be nice and light and full of the nutrients your tree hydrangea needs.

How best to transplant endless summer ?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, Julie! You mentioned in your other comment that you live in zone 5. At this point in the season, I would wait until early spring to transplant your hydrangea. You will use the same planting techniques that you would when planting a new shrub. It's a good idea to give the plant a 2-3" layer of mulch and keep it well-watered for the first two weeks while it is getting established in its new location.

If Endless summer blooms on old wood are you suppose to leave the ugly white sticks on them?
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice Жыл бұрын
If a hydrangea blooms on old wood, that is correct, you don't want to prune these as you would be removing the flower buds for next year

Summer Crush Endless Summer Hydrangea is not one of our plants. You can reach out to them for more information on that plant, but it is a hydrangea macrophylla so the same growing rules apply to that hydrangea as any other hydrangea macrophylla.

I have never heard the term BLACK THUMB before. Natalie, are you a descendant of King Leopold. That black thumb belongs to a black hand. The green thumb is a metaphor. Thanks for the info. I will share this video with all my friends who used to buy your products.

We have about 40 big leaf hydrangeas, our zip code 49721, we bought them at a local lanscaping store, i think our zone is to cold, for two years all the stems are dead in the spring, cut to ground and all new growth thru the summer, beautiful plants but very few flowers. Last fall i covered all the plants, only to find the top buds eaten off by shrews🥴🥴, the stems have survived but its almost july and only a few of them have any leaves popping yet, so if it doesnt have green leaves by now i trimmed them off. Not sure ill ever win this battle
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 2 жыл бұрын
What time of year are you pruning back those stems? Bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood so you don't want to prune them as you'd be removing the flower buds. Do you know which type of bigleaf hydrangeas they are or would you be able to ask the nursery you purchased them from? Once we know their hardiness level then we can determine if the stems are fully dying back each year or if maybe they're just a little later to show signs of new growth. Covering them as you did is always a nice idea to help the flowers next season, but sadly won't protect them from little pests haha :)

Thanks for the offer of help! I liked your video, but Michigan has short summers. Normally, the danger of very cold temps at night is done by the last week of May or the first week of June. By the end of August, things are overgrown and dying back. Seems like most of these are better suited for the South where it stays above freezing all the time. I will say that the Tickled Pink and Pinky Winky panicle type have finally renewed my faith in these plants. As of May 10th, they actually have leaves along the length of the entire branches. The Mountain Hydrangea, that was marketed as no-prune, actually looked completely dead except for leaves developing at the rootball. The “buds” were brown and hard on the brown stems, so it appears that I did the wrong thing by cutting it back to where I saw signs of life in the Spring garden. Oh well, maybe we will at least get growth and leafing out by Fall. At this point, I don’t care about it flowering, I just want it alive :)
@pwcolorchoice
@pwcolorchoice 3 жыл бұрын
@@kirstennewland6822 With mountain hydrangeas, they often look like that because they have a protective layer around the flower buds to help protect from cold. These types of hydrangeas flower in late summer so it can be hard to see any flower growth until the weather is more consistently warm. I'm sure you will see some more growth on it as the season progresses and then next year just leave those buds on so it can flower :)
