I dont think too many people care to share, I was delighted defo. It is a very good refresher to identifying different valves and their basic operation, I am surely sharing this to linkedin as many technicians in the industry who hasn't had any training on schematics and hydraulic circuits and their operation can benefit tremendously. Hello Jim ....I am really very impressed by the way you teach. Initially I felt the teaching was too fast paced but now listening over past few weeks has made me more comfortable. I would say these are the best hydraulic series I have ever seen on you tube. The extent of your knowledge and experience is commendable. Thx for that. I had one query. My daily work is related to John Deere tractors and as youust have heard they are very technologically advanced tractor with lots of hydraulic and electronic schematics. They are a mix of both. Over the years I have developed myself on the hydraulic concepts and this series of yours is just addingvto my knowledge Bank. But I would also like to learn more basic about electronic and how they are controlling the hydraulic circuit and components. I saw your series on "electronically controlled hydraulic systems". So will it be sufficient or is there any other series I should subscribe from your videos. As well I wanted to study more on engine controllers, transmission controllers, relays, sensors, CAN bus communication. I get lot of fear when dealing with these electro hydraulic circuit. Can you please guide me how do I improve on these concepts

20:17 so on the fourth valve, the only possibilities of flow are the left box with flow straight, the middle box with no flow, and the third box with the flow crossed? If the diagram represents the spool of the valve, is there not a middle position between left box and middle box - one line straight through and one line blocked? I guess the diagram is supposed to tell you ther are three options, but are there no intermediate positions of the lever that do a bit of this and a bit of that positions of the spool? Surely hydraulics is not digital...

Excellent question. What I'm referring to in this lecture are "digital" valves that really can be placed in only a fully on or a fully off position. There does exist an "analog" type of valve known as a proportional valve that can be placed in intermediate positions. Hello Mr Pytel and thanks for great content - keep up the good work, please! So much to discover here. But I must take issue with your hydraulic motor prejudice. They are MUCH smaller than ac motors and considerably smaller than dc motors, while still giving excellent across the speed range high torque. I didn’t watch your hydraulic math lecture yet, but am willingly to bet they beat electrics on efficiency, when coupled to a combustion engine prime mover (versus an alternator setup). What could be cooler than a tiny motor kicking out enormous power?? And they get an extra 10% efficiency when painted purple- bizarre but proven true!

To my knowledge I haven't seen one, however, I teach the hydraulics course over a 12 week period and I authorize the students a 8.5X11 sheet of notes for each quiz and test. After 12 weeks the sheet is totally full of everything they need to know. After 3 quarters students have individual "cheat sheets" for basic electronics 1-3, mechanics, hydraulics, and motor control that they can assemble into a complete "smart book" they can use in the field. Some of them are works of art and are passed down to other students.

What are the main reasons for a hydraulic system that it is not able to hold its pressure?

It would take some investigation depending upon the application but my instinctual response for loss of pressure is a leak somewhere in the system. Leaks needn't be external but can also occur internal to components, for example, a spool internal to a directional control valve can leak as well as a leak across the piston face separating the rod and cap end of a cylinder.
