You guys should invest some money and time to make music. I mean, look at MCM - Moog and Marty have their own music. I'm not saying to go to that level, but doing some plays in house would ease your headaches. Their formula works, has worked for 15 years now. Also, you could make into a GHPco special episode. The quest for the perfect music. :)) Sidenote: you should also look into using the AI programs. If you keep one of those programs into a loop of your own music, you'd be safe as far as content matches. Just a thought.

One note of a few RE: steering… For a gyroscopic system, it’s counterintuitive, as in motion you actually want to counter steer, this will induce a lean of the opposite direction. So when you were turning right and leaning right it was actually standing the bike up and leaning left. This is more noticeable on a street/sports bike at speed and is easily overlooked unless you’ve spent time trying to improve track times. Secondly for a hydraulic system, the fluid needs to be pressurised in the desired direction to flow with less resistance. For anyone that has tried to steer a car with hydraulic power steering with the engine off, you’ll notice just how stiff the steering is. This isn’t just the lack of assistance, you’re fighting the fluid in a restricted space, and the harder you push the more resistance you notice, exactly like a suspension damper. They make electronic power assisted steering pumps. Common and cheap in small GM hatchbacks in Europe. I’m sure you could find something similar in North America. The ones here can be adjusted how much assistance the pumps create with a potentiometer.

I 2nd the ATV electric powersteering unit! As you should be able to set it up so that the not a tripple clamp tripple clamp drives its input and then an actuator at the spindle does the output! They are actually pretty good little units that can actually counter react some tire deflection from terrain on like side by sides and whatnot how well it may integrate into this project is yet to be seen. As they are an assist to a manual steering system and not exactly a remote set up. That said sticking with a hydrauluc system may still be prefferd. Either way I think it would be wiser that not to get it sorted out prior to riding of it much more! Kuddos to you for keeping it as light as possible, as I pictured of it going clean thru the fence post and the finally being you baloon mudder tire induced launching off of the car trailer in of the direct distance with out of a real practicail way to bail off even if you wanted too! I'm glad that wasnt the case but ya the steering is pretty important as is probably decent foot pegs should you ever choose to be able to self launch out of harms way! I would think it would be at least a tad bit sketchy knowing that you've got another 46" mudder seeing to follow your every move. That being so staying commited to where ever one sends this monster mudder motorcycle may indeed be a key factor which has me think until possibly you have proven otherwise perhaps keeping of any and all available traction in tact may at some point prove benificial! Or at least I would hold off on shaving the tires until i had determined how robust my final steering is to become as robust enough and it may no longer be an issue! If you do choose to stay hydraulic ya might consider going hydrostatic 2x2 just a thought tho it is your baby and I am very much enjoying watching your build. Power steering might bring its own problems though. Bike steering needs to respond much more accurately than car steering, because stability depends fundamentally on the steering action. With passive steering, the bike will stay upright by itself at speed, but if there's a glitch in an active system then it can just spontaneously throw you off for no apparent reason.

Design tip: keep in mind the torque the cylinder exerts on the wheel is the force times the PERPENDICULAR distance from the centerline of the cylinder to the pivot center of the steering knuckle king pin. Make the mount where the rod end of the cylinder attaches taller, this will make the cylinder more parallel to the length of the bike, making the perp distance larger and giving you more torque

You can see the master piston flexing up and down creating steering lag. You can also hear the fluid struggling to transfer. The orifices or lines could stand to be opened up, a thinner fluid would help also. Another big tip, the amount of trail the front end has determines how well the bike will steer. However, the width and curvature of the front tire is pivotal to the handling as well. You will never get the bike to steer properly with that wide and square of a profile due to its counter active motion to the increased castor angle. This bike will never handle safely until the front tire profile is either narrowed greatly or rounded substantially as in it's current form the relation of center of mass vs contact patch is opposite of what is required for safe and intuitive operation. At best, this will handle similar to the batman motorcycle, like a missile that doesn't turn until a lean angle of 40 degrees. That being said, it looks awesome and is one hell of an undertaking. Very impressive.

My thoughts exactly you are just using a fulcrum to try and push and pull out a manual line. Its just like using your hands to manually pull out the cylinder. If the cylinder is worth anything it will be hard to push or pull. So long story short you should use some sort of pump to push the fluid in or better yet just use some smaller cylinders that mover freely to force the liquid into the larger system.

It will not work anyway because of motorcycle steering dynamics.
@the.happy.mechanic11 ай бұрын
@deadslow201 it may need linear actuators and an electronic steering and over inflating those flat top tires to round them, but that would be extremely dangerous. Been following this for a bit, and it's amazing. I don't know if it's been mentioned before, but I'm worried about steering as a function of the center of gravity. In order to lean the bike, you need to countersteer which puts the bike out from under the center of gravity (usually above the axles) and allows you to keep the bike upright and turn. It looks like the CG of the motorcycle could be so close to, or even below the center of the wheels that this isn't possible. It might need a lift to more of a dark knight "batpod" geometry to be rideable. Keep on!

I'm sure you have had a lot of feedback on the fluidic questions, but just keep in mind that the diameter of the input cylinder needs to be doubled or tripled to amplify the output downstream. That is the simplified math of it. Adding a towpoint and a winch would be sweet!
@chrisparti11 ай бұрын
If the input cylinder diameter is doubled then the handlebars would move half the angle that the front wheel has turned, it would also reduce the mechanical advantage and require more human force to turn. If you doubled the diameter of the cylinder attached to the front wheel, then it would improve the mechanical advantage, making it easier to move the handlebars, but require the handle bars to turn double the angle of the front wheel. I think the restriction is in the fittings and hoses, they are designed for high-pressure low-flow. If he used larger high-flow hoses (similar to those found on hydraulic injection moulding machines) that should improve it, but the actual port threads into the cylinders may be too small for that approach.
@legros73111 ай бұрын
Won't change the fact it need to pass through the small fittings so it act like a syringe will always be really hard to move The only way this work is to use a small hydraulic pump with a orbitrol steering valve and a steering cylinder could be salvaged from a small front Kubota or John Deere front mount mower or other small tractor Problem will be powering the hydraulic pump Or a Volvo electric power steering pump could be used but the bike electrical system is probably not up to the task

Couple small thoughts to keep in mind, first is that as those big wheels begin to move you will find a dramatic increase in the gyroscopic effect which will make steering, leaning, and turning increasingly difficult as speed increases, second is you should look up a quick primer on the application of hydraulic force that will show you how to arrange a small diameter piston to exert great force on a large diameter one.

Love it! I’m sure you could use PSC full hydro steering with some sort of battery powered small pump. Just mount the steering mechanism in your front fork on the bottom of your steering column
@FrodeAltink11 ай бұрын
I don’t really understand why you (Ethan) didn’t start with hydraulic rams? Like, there are brands (like PSC) that make hydro steering. Why not start with that when you have to order stuff anyway. I don’t know that much about hydraulics. But isn’t it quite obvious that an air ram isn’t going to work with hydraulic fluid? Don’t mean to be rude. Just a bit surprised since you have so much experience building stuff and I who have a lot less experience building stuff called it out as soon as I realized that it was air rams.

Your air cylinders might have smaller passage holes than a hydraulic cylinder would have, either in the pipe threaded ports of the cylinder, or the line fittings. You might drill out those passages. There also might be an adjustable speed control valve in your line fittings. There is a restriction somewhere.

My thoughts as well: pneumatic components often use dramatically smaller passages.

The centrifugal force on the heavy wheels and tires are also going to make it harder to steer them at higher speeds. Grab a bicycle rim, spin it on the bearings and try to steer it with your hands holding the axle. You will get what I'm saying.

To increase the steering force In your current system you could use a larger bore for the master cylinder compared to the slave. It would work as a force multiplier. Ie 2x larger bore would except twice the pressure. You would also have to increase the id of your hoses to allow for the increased flow
@deckname579411 ай бұрын
I think you have that backwards. But basically it will just change the steering ratio.
@Berm_Blaster11 ай бұрын
Pretty sure he's right. The bore on the slave being larger than bore of master cylinder won't increase pressure and will definitely to accommodate the higher pressure with larger lines.
@deckname579411 ай бұрын
Just imagine a jack or a hydraulic press. The master cylinder is always smaller in diameter than the slave because you want to increase the force the slave cylinder can output. Same here. Anyways to change the steering ratio you can just change the length of the levers attached to the cylinders.
@timwoods935011 ай бұрын
@deckname5794 your definitely correct. Small bore diameter on the steering side / big bore diameter on the salve side will increase force. To fix the steering ratio you would have to adjust the stroke length to account for the extra volume. The only other way I could think to increase the force whilst keeping the system passive would be to increase the arm length where the cylinder attachs to the steering knuckle.
@deckname579411 ай бұрын
@@timwoods9350 You can only increase the steering force by changing the steering ratio, meaning you have to turn the handle bars further to steer the same amount. Smaller cylinders would have the advantage that you have to move less fluid and therefore reduce losses. But moving fluid and pushing seals back and forth will always have some friction.

I was thinking an alternative to the hydronic steering while keeping a similar foot print would be a boat stick steering setup. Linear output with a rotary input. Gear ratios might be a little tricky but would fit the build perfect.
@nateback79611 ай бұрын
Hey guys absolutely love the build! The steering is a great concept once you iron out the forces, But there is one BIG concern I have about speed wobble once it's driving under its own power. I can see the slop amplifying a wobble. Just something to test thoroughly as you start adding more speed.
@maukaman11 ай бұрын
Interesting point. Speed wobbles are terrifying on any wheeled vehicle but wobbles on a wheel that you’re straddling that weighs more than you do sounds like a nightmare
@slim_pickins639311 ай бұрын

@MyStrawberry-ee4qb11 ай бұрын
With these tires, either you have to use a sensor and a decent servo motor+generator combo. Or you use an electro-hydraulic system, but in the winter you have to wait for the fluid to warm up and when it’s at a higher temp you have to cool it down and that takes up a lot of space and adds weight to your already heavy bike.
@p.i.staker88611 ай бұрын
I think you need to turn your steering system into something that's effectively a giant brake master cylinder and booster. The idea is sound, but for a wheel that big you need the booster. Plus turning the drive cylinder into a master cylinder solves your bleeding/filling problem.

your most likely fighting gyroscopic stabilization in the tires, thats a large part of whats keeping you from steering, you're probably going to need to play with caster angle to help combat this. and a counter balance spike coming out of the rims would look dope af.
@johan.mp411 ай бұрын
Yes, and to get the bike to lean, you have to counter-steer. But those tires probably do not have that great leaning angle 😅
@Dartagn11 ай бұрын
The part where they tested steering without the tire mounted shows it is more of a bug in the design than the tire (although the tire doesn't help.)
@melanieenmats11 ай бұрын
Seems to me the main problem is going to be the rectangular shape of the tires. It's because of the shape that he can't lean. Without leaning if he steers he will just topple to the other side of the turn. The other option is to somehow put weight on the turn side without leaning, like they do in side car racing. But I don't think the weight of one person would be enough to keep the wheels flat in turn at even moderate speed. I think change to rounded tires or make it into a tricycle.
@dangerrangerlstc11 ай бұрын
The problem with full hydro steering, is there's no guarantee the steering input will stay synced with the steering angle of the wheels, which is kind of required on a bike. I think you could get a lot accomplished mechanically with u-joints and steering shafts running through the middle of the swing arm. Either that, or progressive linkage like what's used on excavators.
@stevebaker564211 ай бұрын
would the addition of a hydraulic pump to the steering somehow help? ie, like power steering in a car/truck whatever? .. either way, EPIC build Ethan!! loving this series!
@gusser212111 ай бұрын
I was thinking the same thing... a booster of some sort. but that would entail an electric booster pump because I can't see them routing anything from the engine.
@stevebaker564211 ай бұрын
true, however, unless they wanna kickstart this monster, a battery will already be in there somewhere - needed for lights also, so if a slightly bigger than std lithium battery (pwr + weight reduction, - with hexagons in the mounting too, lol), then the elec booster pump is a viable option.
@ackeblack196811 ай бұрын
There is a lot of 12v electric pumps for the steering so that is a minor problem, without pressure from a pump you are pressing the fluid with the handlebars so it is going to be hard work.

I think as you put it! The build has a certain worthyness to it! That said it would be a considerable investment in both time and money to at this point opt to go hydrostatic. Just the fact that its a consideration is in my opinion a tribute to what your build is indeed worthy of, as i do believe should you go this route you will in the long run have maybe not the fastest craziest thing you may have imagined to start but you may infact have an incredibly competent mudder motorcycle that out performs any notion you may have ever dreamed of it too! All with the most managable of ease... Very cool indeed no matter what route you may take with it. Certainly worthy at this point of at least considering of hydrostatic which is impressive in itself as hydrostatic is often only opted for in rather heavier more robustly engineered of systems. Building of something good enough to even think about applying hydrosyatic drive has your build most certainly above and beyond any kind of back yard go kart contraption, good job!

This looks really very awesome! Can`t wait to see the whole thing running when it is finished! Maybe instead of this 8 percent under-steering you could try to let the hydraulics over-steer for better response, if that`s possible. The big wheels and its space between them makes for a huge turn radius. I think I would like to compensate for that with a higher turn ratio instead of a lower one.
