In the Alberta Apprenticeship books, they show an HMU from a CAT scraper with just 3 hoses hooked up and the bottom left port plugged. All the 3 hoses could be a 3/4 ID and run from the HMU under the cab floor through the frame. The top left port has a sort of nipple. I have no idea why it's set up like that. The bad thing is that I'm studying on my own for Red Seal and don't know anybody with that king of expertise... Anyway great videos on this channel !!!

So basically they are a combination of a precision metered flow control valve and a hydraulic (pump/motor).

From my understanding there is two types of Orbitrol valves. Non-Load Reaction and Load Reaction. If I have a machine with a Load Reaction Orbitrol, could I mount a double acting pilot operated check-valve to the cylinders to make it Non-Load Reaction? Or would this make the steering jerky and hazardous as I first have to overcome the check-valve for every steering movement?

Bit of a hydraulics neophyte, but only question i have is what component is the steering wheel driving? At 1:51 you mention it's connected to a shaft attached to the valve. Is this is connected the valve spool opposite the physical connection the Gerotor is adjusting mechanically? I'm guessing that input is the small rectangle symbol on the right side of the spool (2 arrowheads pointing into circle)? Is this a simply mechanical connection to the valve spool?

Hey there @hockeyrink. Thanks for the question. The steering wheel via shaft, is connected to the orbitrol or HMU. The HMU is everything that you see in the rectangle/assembly outlined by the dashed lines. The exact point of steering wheel/shaft connection is not as clearly marked on this schematic as it is some others. Some manufacturers show a shaft symbol (dbl parallel lines, same symbol as for mech linkage) coming into the valve spool, and some show the shaft first entering into the gerotor circle part of the symbol. Have a look at this image. www.carldyke.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/laptopAccumulators.png?9e2701 Do you see the shaft stub sticking out of the gerotor circle at the 9:00 position? I hope that helps answer your question. We're working on new steering lessons on LunchBoxSessions.com and some 3D videos that will help with this topic. Thanks again for the question. There's also this image of ours where you will see the shaft (left side) from steering wheel, entering the HMU. www.carldyke.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/orbitrol.jpg?9e2701

Hey im still not sure how it works. Why do the the lines move with the valve? Why are the the ports blocked off? Whats that one dotted line do? Whats that symbol mean on the lower left of the spool? And it looks like theres flow control valves on the spool itself, what is this and how does it work? It also looks like when turning left or right both ports of the gerotor get pressurized, so how can there be movement there? Absolutely beautiful animation though, really helps with the visual aspect

Think i got it. 1. The lines represent the outer sleeve that the spools rotates in. 2. Because its a closed center system 3. The dotted line is a return to rank line. 4. Not exactly sure, but im guessing it has to do with the mechanical linkage 5. Not sure on this either. Maybe its not variable but still a restriction? 6. With equal pressure on both sides of the rotor it cancels out and can be turned freely. It can also act as a emergency pump if the main pump goes down. 2 Hours well spent learning about these great valves

Help? What do you call the "steering mechanism principle" (eg Ackermann, Bell-crank steering, etc.) used in this, that turns both wheels that pivots in the center of an (e.g. single solid) axle? Like, the old-style wagons.... Also, would there be a slip or skidding when driving at high speed? Would really appreciate your help...

So how does this system make up for the fact that cylinders retract faster than the extend?
@timc2219
@timc2219 5 жыл бұрын
think just due to mechanical coupling, the flow will just go accordingly to rod and cap ends of opposing cylinders- pressure in a common line will automatically equalize even with flow differences from rod displacement... if they werent mechanically tied though, yeah, speed would vary

Yeah this confused the hell out of me at first because of all the technical mumbo jumbo. I then watched a video from AvE about it and understood it way better and when I came back to this video I had already learned what this video teached. So basically to understand this video you have to know the technical lingo and if you know the technical lingo chance is you already understand what this device does. Not very good vid for showing this off to newcomers or homegamers

hello , I have a question. The force on cap end cylinder be more than force on rod end cylinder , assuming equal pressure. Does it cause any problem in steering ? how do they resolve it?
@mphepg
@mphepg 3 жыл бұрын
In an articulating machine as shown, the steering force is always the sum of one cylinder pushing and one pulling because of the criss-crossed hoses
