If you put those expensive cameras into the chamber in a steel box you may use a ~45° mirror right before the optics to make the opening on the steel case look 90° away from the source of explosion. That way the shrapnel can hit a cheap mirror but not the camera, while the setup maintains good visual quality. Object \ =========|| \ camera || \ =========||

Brass is composed partly of lead to make it more maleable when used as a plumbing part. If you are looking for explody, you want as low of lead as you can find. Most modern brass plumbing will be low lead due to new laws, but old scrap metal brass will probably have higher lead by comparison and not explode nearly as readily.
@shanent57936 ай бұрын
Lead makes makes the chips brittle and hence leaded brass is easier to machine, so how can it be more malleable?
@eschybach6 ай бұрын
@@shanent5793 All I can tell you, is older leaded brass sealed on the pipe threads much easier. Modern brass fittings like to crack and fracture. I've always been told the lead is added so that the threads can give a little when they are wrenched together, otherwise the threads are more likely to break or the fittings crack as I've experienced.

8:42 Copper does work harden. For example you can take a soft copper tube and form it into a bend, but if you keep trying to reshape the bend the copper gets hard. You can heat it to glowing red with a torch to soften it (annealing). I can't explain why brass is more explosive. Perhaps it deforms more before it fractures so it can store more energy, or maybe it's the relationship of stress, strain and elongation? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_hardening#Copper

Hello again L and H. Thank you for doing such thoughtful and clear scientific videos. As you are planning to protect the camera, it seems time to try the following; take a brass cylinder and make tight fitting .5 cm thick brass covers for the ends. Braze the ends to the cylinder. Drill an 8 mm hole in the top. Make a steel plug to tightly fit in the 8mm hole. Now light your cutting oxy/acetylene torch and adjust it to a neutral flame. Rapidly tap the tip of said torch with your thick welding gloves, extinguishing the flame. Quickly stick the torch tip into the cylinder hole, give it about 5 seconds. Pull the tip out and plug the hole, close the torch valves and stow it away. Now, place the sealed cylinder in your press and crush it. It should make a nice pop. Good luck

@@AndrewWellsPlus Even copper work harden and do weird things if you let it cool between working so it doesn't have a chance to anneal itself....
@cleon_teunissen6 ай бұрын
When work hardening is cumulative then subdividing in stages won't make much difference. To undo workhardening a proces called 'annealing' must be applied. Annealing reverses the changes of hardening. Most metals and alloys require heat treatment to achieve annealing. I expect the same goes for brass. There are metals however, that have annealing happening at ambient temperature. For instance, the metal Lead is an example of such a material. With lead work hardening doesn't accumulate. That is one of the reasons that sheets of lead are used for waterproofing roofs. With most metals, when you bend a sheet a couple of times the metal is work hardened. The metal becomes brittle, and after bendng a couple of times the sheet metal will start to crack. Lead however, can be worked and reworked, without the lead becoming brittle.

Then you could remove its big screen, thereby only needing a much smaller protective box.
@DUKE_of_RAMBLE6 ай бұрын
Follow up suggestion... For adding a highspeed camera inside, if you want to film but NOT risk it while even inside a box, you could always cut a hole in the ceiling, then use a mirror angled at 45° _inside_ the bunker, filming everything that way. Mythbusters did that back in the day. Also, SloMo Guys do that sometimes as well. _(granted, their Phantom is a substantially more expensive camera than the Chronos... not implying the Chronos is by any means "disposable" lol)_
