not a question really but im curious about the files on the hard drive and if there might be any trace of the older version of the game or a log or something that might help understand when the first version actually came out, also curious where the game/pc keeps the highscores saved as well, no reason apart from curiosity tbh, also i see some visual differences between the two cabinets, curious about if the one on the right is a newer unit or what, also hope seeing them both connected for local multiplayer and how that works (ive never seen these irl in spain rip)

I know this will probably be part of the next one, but please make sure you tell us as much weird detail about the networking as you can, I know this era was *weird* . I'm lead to believe some earlier things (Daytona?) tied all the *CPU* *clocks* together to ensure sync.

Do you plan on trying to run different software on the arcade PC? It would be interesting to see what the system is fully capable of. I wasn’t expecting to see a Celeron inside, but I guess if it can run the game well, then it’s more than enough. The controls probably wouldn’t be ideal for other games, but it certainly makes it more fun! Also can’t wait to see more about the CRT, it seems to still be in great condition considering it’s probably built up many hours as this point. Overall it’s a really cool game and cabinet, can’t wait to see more about it and setting it up alongside the other for multiplayer. The LAN connectivity will certainly be interesting to see how that works as well.

Hey there, I'm one of the devs of the arcade version of Hydro Thunder. Stumbled across your video and really enjoyed it. To answer some of your questions, we debuted the game at the ATEI show in London in January 1999, but we started ramping production in late 1998, which corresponds to your envelope label. IIRC, the game originally shipped with software version 1.00D but was updated over time for various reasons. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for putting together this video, and congrats on finding 2 of these.

Hello! That's really good to know when it was first shown and does clear some things up. 1.00d is the earliest version that I've seen a record of still, but it has been found and preserved since I recorded this video too! Thank you for reaching out and for making such a wonderful game!

I vividly remember in 81 or 82 there was a tech working on a "tail gunner" arcade machine. I was very much into electronics, so i watched the guy work. He was fixing the coin counter mechanism, so he was running quarter after quarter through the machine to test it. When he finally got it where he wanted, he re-locked the coin counter, and told me to "enjoy." There were like 30+ credits on the machine. I played that game until my parents came and dragged me out. ^-^

I did repairs for pizzarat for a while, and every once in a while you finish up a repair with some wide-eyed kid trying to get a peek into the guts of the machines. Even though the mouse keeps tight metrics on gameplay and pulls repair techs into meetings when the numbers aren't right, you still gotta toss those kids a few accidental plays when ya can.

Hi! I'm the actual Wikipedia editor who first claimed Hydro Thunder released in March 1999, back in May 2018. If I'm being honest, looking back I should've done more due diligence when looking up the release date for this one - which I got from either MobyGames and GameFAQs, if I recall correctly. I'm pretty sure they pulled from that same software revision sheet, which I took blindly as "the real date" as I had only seen 1999 floating around as the real release for this date, as I felt 1998 was "suspicious" back then. Of course, knowing what I know now - I could (and _should,_ for that matter) have done much better research, given how there's actually _huge_ problems with release dates floating around (for example, most of the "end of the month" release dates for games for the late 90s actually are _wrong_ due to a GameSpot database glitch that happened in 2000/2001 per a migration/redesign they did back then, which I'm sure GameFAQs, MobyGames, and early Wikipedia editors pulled from)! I am so sorry to have caused that confusion for you, been a long-time viewer of yours! I've already updated the article back to 1998 for you, as well as added the piece of information that it was sold as a HyperDrive conversion kit as well. Hope this helps a little bit! (P.S. if I get reverted, I'll keep trying to keep that intact)
@TechTangents
@TechTangents 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! I want to first state that I completely understand how it can be an unknown depth needed for research and that something can "seem" right without another clue to tip you off it isn't. Especially if you work on multiple pages/topics. So I totally see how you could come to March 1999 and don't fault you at all, it was the December 1998 manufacture date that made me wonder and start to dig deeper. I'm not totally sure 1998 is right either, so far I think the best clue we may have is the trademark info I mentioned that shows it was first commercially used on February 10th 1999. I'm not trademark expert. but what I found online makes me thing that the announcement of that date typically means it was first commercially available then. On the Hyperdrive conversion, I don't currently have any evidence that a conversion kit was sold. My best guess right now is that Midway had some unsold "dead stock" Hyperdrives as they were preparing to launch Hydro Thunder that they converted themselves to have more stock for the newer game. The conversion seems too comprehensive and complicated to me to have been done outside of the factory. It does seem weird though that they would have sat on these for three months though before selling them. So I could see them having been sold in December 1998 or January 1999, but I don't have a solid answer other than the trademark announcement as to when sales really started. I will continue to dig and if I find any further evidence I'll bring it up on the talk page for the article.

@@TechTangents Speaking from a position of ignorance, I'd be curious if there was some sort of limited test release in late 1998 using 1.00d in Hyperdrive conversions before the full commercial release happened in early 1999 with 1.01b addressing some bugs from the test and new cabinets.

As a kid, I too had an infatuation and was enamored with this game at the arcades. The first time I ever played it was magical due in no small part to that subwoofer you're talking about. I remember how much the seat shook when I boosted. I had played it a few other times later in my life and was never quite as impressed as those machines had the volume and subwoofer turned way down which greatly affected the enjoyment. As someone who is an arcade technician, it's refreshing to see someone describe the awkwardness that is involved with working on these cabs. There really isn't much room for getting inside to fix stuff. Our arcade is mostly Early-Mid 00's SEGA stuff, mostly Lindbergh based. I've only been there for a year but did restore our After Burner Climax Deluxe cabinet and our OutRun2 SP SDX 4 player cabinet. And just finished putting together a Let's Go Jungle Special cab as well. Sometimes you go TOO in depth with explanations, but in this case, I was glued to every second. Great video. Oh and yes, finding information on arcade cabs is hard, the manufacturers and part sellers are still trying to sell those.

Pro tip, never use windex, or detergent based cleaners on acrylics or plastics. Windex is generally safer on older screens as they were actually glass back then. (it actually eats the plastic over time and makes things milky white rather than clear.) (look up windshield cleaners for motorcycles etc.)

At one point I held the 2nd best time for Nile Adventure. Story Time: Back in the late 90's I would go to Dave and Busters at least a couple times a week with a co-worker. We found that we really loved Hydro Thunder. We got to the point where we were only going to D&B's just to play Hydro Thunder. After a few months we started to notice something odd. While racing, no matter how bad a person did, they could and often would win. What this did was cause us to save every boost, and no matter how bad we did, we could end up within striking distance and have a full boost when it mattered most. Needless to say this became somewhat boring since we would both milk this to try and win. I did some digging and found the programmers email. I wrote to him and asked what was going on with this mechanic? He wrote back and said it was called "Kethcup Mode" and it was designed to make the game fun for both adults and kids alike since no matter what happened you always had a chance. The best part was, he told us how to disable this via some button combinations on the machine. Since we were playing on arcade machines we didn't have access to the config like you do. Needless to say, this really leveled the playing field and changed the way we played. Every game now took on enormous consequences and we could now play without cheats. It really changed the game and over the next several months we would have the high scores every time we played. Then one day, there was a new high score, this guy with the initials of BIL. We were like, who the F is this? we would play and sometimes I would over take BIL and I would enter my initials. Then next week would roll around and there was BIL on top again, I would play and beat him and then I was on top. We did this for months, two people who never met battling it out for numero uno. One day I had a run on Nile Adventure that I knew I had a MONSTER time and looked up world record times and noticed I had the number 2 time for Nile Adventure in the world. I looked up how to submit my score to Twin Galaxies. I was on top of the world, I had a serious accomplishment on my hands. The requirements were this, they wanted a picture of you, next to the high score with your initials while holding your drivers license. The problem is they wanted you to use your actual initials, and I always use STV short for Steve. This was enough to disqualify me and put an end to my excitement. Even though I never got listed on Twin Galaxies, the battle between my co-worker and the faceless opponent I will never forget. This game will be in my basement one day. It is by far the most fun I have ever had with a driving style game. Fun fact, when you pressed the right key combo, you got a picture of a ketchup bottle with the circle and hash through it noting that it was now disabled.

This was actually a game I was considering to add to my own home collection until I came across it's spiritual successor and bought it. I had no idea there was even a sequel until I noticed all the similarities and that it was made by the same team. Enjoy it, there is nothing that can emulate the arcade experience!

The 1st major upgrade I would definitely do is get the CF card replacement drive for that game mechanical hard drives are known to fail and you would be better off spending the money and actually getting the game converted to solid state

25:37 make a mold of the dash then just vacuum form it, It's a super simple process to do and with the mold you can make replacements if it ever breaks again.

This is one of my favorite games too. Im extremely lucky to have played the arcade version as I live in Brazil, and this kind of arcade exports are rare around here. I’ve played on a buffet when I was a kid, the first time I’ve played on the Nile Stage too, as I wasn’t good enough to unlock on N64.

I played Hydro Thunder religiously as a kid, mastered Razorback and all. You're living the dream, my dude. I need to get one of these at some point, even just for the aesthetic alone lol

This is definately one of the more common arcade cabs out there, but for that reason you made a great choice because parts are out there and it's affordable. I always thought the speakers on the chair were awesome (and LOUD). I think it's funny that there is just a straight up PC in a case to power all that hah. Pretty amazing when you think the tiny little Dreamcast almost did completely the same thing around the same time.

I got this for Xbox because of this video and it’s a great game. The graphics still look decent on a SeriesX, I bet playing the arcade version must be a blast! I’ll be on the look out for any cabinets for sale, thanks for introducing me to an awesome game!

The arcade cabinet I would love to get was Firefox. I remember seeing it in the arcades and was blown away by the tv style graphics, (not realising at the time it was all on Laser Disk.) I was blown away and couldn't stop playing it. Nice find though. I just wish I had the room for an Arcade Cabinet. Especially as FireFox never had a home console port.

Awesome. Hydro Thunder was always my favorite arcade machine, doing boost jumps with the throttle. I also played it a ton back on the PS1, N64, and still have Midway Arcade Treasures 3 on GameCube. This and Rush 2049 are pretty much the only racing games I've ever been into.

YESSSSSSSS Played Hydro Thunder at an arcade on a cruise ship so much my family was mad at me for not doing more activities we couldn't do at home. It's just easier to play then a lot of racing games so it's hard to put down.

Honestly I only have a passing interest in 80's arcade machines, and absolutely none for late 90's arcades, particularly games I've never heard of. But that said, I found this video entertaining and was impressed by the research you've done and think the results at the end when assembled were fantastic. Great video!

I had 2 of these in a warehouse for the longest time. I have to agree that the crt is 100% the way to go. However for reliability I tend to swap out the crt for an lcd panel. However. I keep the crts and rebuild them when they are not completely burnt out.
