In this video, I explore how to grow bell peppers in bucket containers using hydroponics! We go from seed to harvest and I show you everything it takes to grow and harvest your own bell peppers at home indoors or outdoors. I grow red, yellow and green snack peppers and they turn out great! I highly recommend growing these plants in your garden as they are relatively easily to take care of, and the harvests are very rewarding. If growing bell peppers indoors year round is something you want to do, this video will show you everything involved in that process!

@JimmyBHarvests

You’re absolutely right! I top up the bucket once a week or as necessary to keep the water level high, leaving an inch or so of roots exposed to air only. Completely submerging them can drown the plant. Young plants can go 2-3 weeks without nutrient additives, but I like to start feeding somewhere between 7-14 days after germination.

Hi Jimmy, I'm going to try doing this with the smaller 2 gallon Food Quality buckets. You seem to be using 2" net cups, are you finding the size appropriate, or would 3" be better? I'm going to try the 2", and then but another two inch hole with a cap between the center hole and the edge, so I can check the fluid level and add more when needed. I have great luck with a 2" holesaw and a portable drill. I know that plants go through liquid like crazy, but I'm more concerned with patio space, rather than having to add fluid daily.

@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 3 жыл бұрын
The real method Kratky documented was to fill the reservoir once at the start and leave it alone while the plant grew. Using smaller buckets or jars, you can top up a reservoir once it starts to run low. How fast your water gets drank up by the plant will vary. I check in every couple of days and see if I should add any water/nutrients.

Yes, multiple times. I check the reservoir weekly and top it up as it runs low. If the water in the bucket gets too dirty i'll do a complete change out. I always leave a few inches of plant roots exposed to air, above the water surface. Its possible to overfill and drown the plant.

Thank you for the video. How did you plant the branch you cut and propagated in a jar into the kratky pail? Did you put some rockwool into the netpot or just put the branch into the netpot?
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 3 жыл бұрын
If I propagate a plant i typically put it into a net cup without rockwool, and fill the remaining space of the cup with clay pebbles. If the plant is pretty big, and roots are already 2-3 inches long, (as is the case with propagation,) you don't need any rockwool. Just ensure your new roots have access to your water/nutrients in your reservoir

I check the ppm when i check the ph. If the ppm gets high, its because water is evaporating out quicker than the plants can absorb the nutrients. In such a case, you could add just water to the reservoir to balance it back out. Truthfully its hard to do anything wrong. Just keep the ph between 6-6.3 and you should be fine with anything else. Question for you, I am new to Growing indoors I usually grow outdoors I have taken potted plants and bought them in that were established and then shortly after they were in my grow tent I developed white flies. Lo and behold the plant wound up getting wiped out, I have good airflow but they're still there. What light are you using, my light produces a 960 par . I did a lot of research on the lights before I bought them, the one pepper plant that I bought in from outside which was producing peppers stopped producing peppers permanently. Any thoughts, thanks. Great video by the way precise into the point. Keep up the good work.
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests Жыл бұрын
I personally never bring a plant inside once it has been outside. The bug risks are just way too high. You might not even see bugs on the plant outside, but they'll procreate quickly and before you know it youve got a mess inside. Id try to sterilize everything and grow indoors from the start on a second attempt. As for lights ive used a few at this point. Theyre all pretty similar, some are brighter than others but from a functional standpoint plants have grown similarly no matter which light i used. Id guess your pepper just suffered from the shock of moving indoors- temp, air and light changes. When people move plants outside, they often have a 'hardening off' period where they do it gradually, the same theoretically applies in reverse i would think, moving a plant inside outside Best of luck with your plants. Its all great learnings if you stick with it!

Good question! It’s hard to say because electricity prices vary so much location to location. For me, it’s about $8 a month to run my light. Nutrients to grow a pepper plant or two at all times maybe $4 a month? I got good production from this plant and did think it grew enough fruit to justify the costs and be cheaper than simply buying the peppers. Which isn’t the case for all vegetables.

Hey Jimmy i have a question for you! Once you repot your pepper into your bucket and you need to refill the bucket with nutrients. Im assuming you use the nutrients calculator on the future harvest website, do you add nutrients based on the amount of water in your bucket or on the amount of water in the container you’re mixing the nutrients in? Im asking because i know you mix your nutrients in a separate container and then add it into the bucket
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Yosef! I always follow the mixing instructions on the bottles I'm using, and i mix the appropriate amount of nutrients for the amount of water in my small mixer bottle. Once that small mix jug good to go i add it all to the large bucket. You can start to check the ppm of your main bucket- if its getting too high, its a sign that the water is evaporating out quicker than nutrients are being absorbed. You can just add water in this case and not add nutrients. Its an art more than a science and youll get a feel for it with practice!

Hey, great video! Two questions. What is the humidity situation in your place? My apartment is super super dry, and we don't have control of the temperature they set the units at, and I'm worried that will mess with this set-up. Secondly, do you think this would work with full sized bell peppers, or would the yield be considerably lower?

@JimmyBHarvests 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! Place i grew this was also relatively dry, i dont have record of the actual humidity levels though.. you could get a tent to control the conditions better or spray the plant with a water bottle occasionally. Just need to try and see what happens. You can do this with regular sized bell peppers. Any pepper really. My understanding is that adding aeration to the reservoir will help grow larger fruits. Good luck!

How often do you refill or change the water?
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 3 жыл бұрын
I add to the reservoir to top it up as necessary- maybe once a week on average. Every 6 weeks or so a complete change out might help. Really depends on the life cycle stage of the plant. Kratky method is very ‘set it and forget it’. Just keep an eye on your plant if it’s drying out add more to the reservoir

Hi Jimmy! I was wondering if there's a reason why you use painted jars for hydroponics? is it just what you have or does it have to do with blocking the sun from the roots?
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 2 жыл бұрын
If light gets into your reservoirs, it can cause algae to grow. Algae isnt the biggest deal, I've had plenty of plants grow fine despite its presence, but it will eat up some of your nutrients. Painting the jars keeps algae to a minimum and removes that variable from the process.

typically i just top up the reservoir as it begins to run low - how frequently that is required depends on the life stage and size of the plant. Maybe every 6 weeks+ I might do a complete change and clean the reservoir.

Hi Jimmy, I am using the Kratky method on lettuce, tomatoes and peppers. I am having some issues when the water level in the buckets gets low. I have refilled my buckets with nutrient water leaving space for oxygen for the roots. I have tried just adding my original nutrient mixture to a tomato plant and it died. Then I matched the ph in the bucket water with my nutrient mixture and my pepper plant died after being very happy. I read your comments below and you check your water levels weekly. Is that the trick to not let the level get too low?
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris. Sorry to hear that bro. I usually like to add in water to top up the bucket every week or so, as opposed to letting it get really low and refilling all the way. That said, I’ve done things both ways and never had an issue. If you start your seeds/plants in plain water they will grow and use nutrients from within the seed to keep expanding. Eventually though this will run out, which is why we add nutrients into the mix. The ph of plain water doesn’t seem to effect the plant much. With your nutrient mixtures however the ph is very important. Plants can only absorb nutrient in a particular ph range. I try to stay between 6.1-6.3 when I mix the reservoir or add to it. Plain water is typically up around 7 ph or so.. if you matched your nutrients to that, the plant wasn’t able to get any of those nutrients out of the water. My most recent video - pumpkin attempt #2 does a pretty good job showing how I let my seeds develop and when I add nutrients. Best of luck bro any more questions let me know!

@@JimmyBHarvests thanks for your reply. When you monitor the water level each week, do you leave space for oxygen for the roots? Lastly, what have you successfully grown with the kratky method? Thanks for your help. Chris
@JimmyBHarvests
@JimmyBHarvests 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, when topping up a bucket I leave an inch or so of roots exposed to air. With the Kratky method I’ve grown lettuce varieties, kale, peppers, beans, cannabis, pumpkin and peas. Currently I even have some small maple tree seedlings growing Kratky style. The only issue I’ve run in to is using Kratky outside in summer heat. Dissolved oxygen levels decrease in hot water and it gets tougher to sustain the plants. Indoors it works incredibly well

Light leaks through these buckets a bit which has allowed some algae to grow in the reservoir. The buckets need a coat of paint or something outside of them to stop that light from getting in
