We have some extra strawberry plants so decided on using some grow bags we had to make a new grow system using the wood we cut on the Woodmizer.

Morning Katie, Great catch and fix on the strawberries :) It might be a fun test on the grow bags or next year , to try 4 ( or even 5 -6) plants per container slightly off set. just to see if the combo would give the same or better yield. A couple of turkey thermometers in the black and white containers , might show any temperature difference . THe elevated plant frames ( home grown ) and grow bags are a great bonus use of greenhouse space. I know you are all ready set up at the farmers market this early morning. With plenty of great eats and flower baskets for your appreciative community. Happy you all had some family time . Never enough of that !!! Did you mention the type of and name of the tomatoes ? With so many more folks growing and canning , that might make for a nice kitchen series by Doug ? :) Everyone loves a great recipe to surprise their taste buds. Has Doug , with all the fire wood cutting ever considered growing mushrooms in the left over 3-4 " upper branches . Yields can often go 3-5 years . Thank you for your continued contributions , love of growing and real life moments on your farm . Every day is something different.

Doug has never thought about mushrooms. he does love them all kinds so that would be something interesting to look into too. good ideas on the thermometers going to have to see if there is a big difference. Doug would love to do a kitchen series, but he said he doesn't think anyone would be interested. I will get him to do something.

WOW LOOKS GORGEOUS!! I can’t believe how fast your strawberries are growing!! You sure make it look easy!! (I know different!!! As a newbie, I don’t have all the fancy equipment or a beautiful high tunnel or drip lines or anything like that but I have a passion for growing my own food in my own apartment and I have 25 strawberry crowns that I purchased from a company from PEI and they began pretty great but then the outer edges of the leaves turned brown and they are showing they aren’t real happy and it could be because the feet are staying too wet and as you mentioned strawberries don’t like wet feet I thought if they could be grown in an NFT system then they would enjoy wet feet but I have to admit my NFT system isn’t a true Nutrient film technique, mine is more of a quarter of the pipe is filled with water at all times even though the water is constantly moving and I did that on purpose because if the pump fails at any time the pipes will still have enough water in them to sustain the plants for a little while. That doesn’t sound great for the strawberries so I think I’m going to switch it up and I do have some thin tubing and I could push water through it and I have some slightly smaller tubing that I have these interesting ends that I can put on them to regulate the flow out of each end I may start using that to water the strawberries
@HomegrownPassion
@HomegrownPassion 2 жыл бұрын
sounds like that would work. we did do our strawberries in NFT one season, and you are right we had to knock down the water flow... we ended up using drip emitters 1.5 gpm and that seemed to do the trick. One tip is that strawberries like to be held tight in the growing medium so when you put your crowns in the rock wool or net cup make sure they are packed in...
@leannekenyoung
@leannekenyoung 2 жыл бұрын
@@HomegrownPassion great advice and yes that’s what those things are called emitters to me they are like black little stakes with a red cap on top that you can turn to the amount of water that you want to drip out, I also have the kind that goes into the small tubing and have the same type of end caps to control the flow. Looks like I’ve lost all but one of my strawberry plants that I had put in the window boxes but the ones in the 5 gallon buckets are still surviving but definitely not thriving.

I use those same grow bags from Crop King for my outdoor hydroponic strawberries. I can concur 5 plants per side and I put use drippers just like the tomato bato buckets with 3-4 per grow bag. I use Crop Kings leafy formula with Potasium nitrate added for fruiting, works great.

I’m new to hydro fruit and I’m trying to find out what to feed strawberries and fruits using Masterblend; someone recommended adding Cal-Mag (calcium and magnesium for fruit plant growth); is this similar to yours ? Masterblend is an NPK; I’m just not sure what fertilizer to buy to add to it ……

What is the nutrient solution formulation you are using for the strawberries?
@HomegrownPassion

So, it's based off our source water. Everyone asks for it but it won't work because everyone's water is different. If you get your source water tested (very cheap) a horticulturist can build a recipe for you.
