Very inspiring video, I love what you have done. On the subject of the algae growing in the water, one possible way to stop that would be to cover the water reservoir in black plastic. The one thing algae has to have to grow is light and can not grow in the dark. This is the same principle as covering your swimming pool in the winter. Most people are told by the pool chemical sellers you have to shock the pool with a lot of chlorine before covering it for winter but if you’ll notice all covers are black on the water side. This keeps the sun light out .

Yup, eggplants in hydroponics is magic. I have a bad eggplant addiction and my hydroponic garden kept me in eggplant. I have a garden on the deck. I am thinking about a HF greenhouse. I use an air stone in the sump tank, no algae.

I'm just starting out on my hydroponic journey - why do you need to mist from the top when you have direct watering through the hydroponic system? Could you bypass misting (which feels like a inefficient use of water) by running the hydroponic system watering more frequently?

@FormulaJake4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! We are currently working on a follow-up explanation 👌🏼 Between the greenhouse itself, all of the building materials, and all of the extra add-ons like the fan, vent openers, etc, we are at least $1500 into it by now.

Very impressive! To control the algae could you not add fish to the set up?
@FormulaJake2 жыл бұрын
Yes! We ended up adding a pleco and he has done the job. We also could have covered it haha but the pleco cleaned it up very well
@the94probeguy872 жыл бұрын
@@FormulaJake I saw the set up that they use at Epcot and its pretty impressive! Plants keep the water clean and fish give the plants nutrients. It would be great to see if that was a path you ventured down.

if you add heat and cooling along with some LED lights you can grow year round

Sorry man, I didn't see your original comment! We did add the nutrients in the same tank, with the pump running to immediately run the nutrients through the system. I don't know if they are bad for the fish, but our pleco is huge! He is easily 9 inches long

Hello, I am new to the greenhouse community, I would like to build one with a sturdy frame and keep some warmth in. What would you recommend?
@FormulaJake4 жыл бұрын
Welcome! In my opinion, the Harbor Freight greenhouse is pretty flimsy. I don't have a lot of wind, so it is not a problem. As far as heat, I have not looked into heaters, except for the heating element that I use in our water bin during the winter. Best of luck!
@shansiddiqui47414 жыл бұрын
@@FormulaJake The water bin won't freeze in the winter?
@FormulaJake4 жыл бұрын
Winters don't get too cold here, around 32°F or 0°C at the very coldest. It's not cold enough outside to freeze the water, but we use a heating element to keep the fish warm.
@Dr1Paul4 жыл бұрын
Are you using the greenhouse year round or if not when are your start/stop months?
@FormulaJake4 жыл бұрын
We usually plant in the spring and depending on what we grow, we might run it continuously through the fall. Our eggplants grew later/longer than expected. But our tomatoes didn't die off like we expected! So they are run continuously.

How did the cucumber get pollinated inside a greenhouse?
@FormulaJake4 жыл бұрын
Good question... I suppose that a bee might have made its way in through the vents in the top of the greenhouse during hot weather
@Biergeliebter4 жыл бұрын
@@FormulaJake Ok, thanks. I haven't been that lucky. We have a cucumber vine in a pot inside the screen around the pool and I even tried hand pollinating but we haven't gotten a single cucumber yet.

That’s an awful lot of browning considering this is a greenhouse hydroponic setup. Love the video & how you’re figuring things out but I’ve never had so much browning in ground or container gardens. Definitely like the setup tho. Trying to figure out if I want to try something similar tbh. I have absolutely no experience in hydroponics, but I have rooted & cloned thousands of plants in buckets of water at the Crystal Coast. Usually have a dozen or so to sell trade or giveaway at any given time.

Yields are supposed to be larger with hydroponics so how many peppers are you getting from one plant? And why so many different varieties of the same sweet bell peppers? Fact green peppers have hardly any nutrients red peppers are just a Ripened pepper that has 10x the nutrients & flavor.. 🤷🏻♂️ just like sweet banana peppers. For example, people pick them when they’re yellow, well that’s ignorant because you want them bright orange or bright red so they have all the nutrients & flavor that’s the whole reason why we grow our own food. Picking green/unripe peppers just makes them bitter in comparison & nutrients lacking. Yes, I’m a pepper guy and I’ve done extensive amounts of research but this should be pretty much common knowledge to anyone who’s growing their own food. My peppers that are in containers all have normally 40 to 50 peppers on them at one time. That being said what in the hell do you do with so many Carolina reapers I have not figured it out yet lol. Can’t even give them away really they’re too hot. 🥵 😂
