Shane shows how to tie the larva stage of the Caddis Fly using Larva Lace and other innovative materials. A very effective pattern for streams, rivers and even lakes created by the late, great Shane Stalcup.

Shane great looking fly and going to try to tie it as well. Could you tell me what size hooks you use for this and as for the larva lace it comes in different sizes. Could you tell me what size larva lace works best for each size hooks because I guess you could tie these in different sizes. Again great tutorial and great job. Thanks from a old beginner. Thanks, Al

I can't quite make out what that 'plastic' like material is; please write out what it is; thank you. The CC doesn't look correct

+Larry Glatt It is called "Larva Lace". It is in the materials list at the end of the video. You can Google it and find many online sellers or ask your local fly shop, they will probably have it if they have a tying materials department.

Your methodology reminds me of the woven nymphs for Euro Nymphing (woven nymphs)

Great pattern for the Hydropsychoidea larva! But sorry, a complete live cycle or complete metamorphic life cycle (four stages) of caddisflies are: Egg, Larva, Pupa and Adult. The adult stage of the caddisfly is the imango. The adult (imago) can mate as soon as it imerge into a adult. Mayflies has a incomplete metamorphic life cycle: Egg, Pupa and Adult. The adult stage of mayflies are split up into to two parts, the subimango (dun) and imango (spinner). The adult subimango can not mate and must molt into the imango adult so it can mate.
