I loved Hilda Baker she was so amazing and naturally talented. She brought so much joy and laughter in our homes. They don't make them like her anymore.

Well done for tracking down Hilda’s final resting place. Loved ‘Nearest & Dearest’, a shame she and Jimmy didn’t get on but they made great comedy. Hilda’s catch phrases of ‘I must get a little hand put on this watch’ and ‘Have you been Walter’ among many others have stuck in my memory all these years. Very sad she died from Alzheimer’s alone and forgotten and no memorial in the crematorium, she deserves better.

my sentiments too. that has really upset me that she sadly passed away and none of hylda's celebrity friend's didn't keep in touch with the world's funniest female comedian nor attended her funeral. Our Hylda Deserved way far better. R.I.P to a true comedy GENIUS. xxxx

Hi Kevin. If you look through the comments you will see that I contacted the British Music Hall Society about this matter. They kindly looked into it and after contacting the Crematorium were able to tell me that there is a memorial to Hilda but it is not at the exact site of where her ashes were spread. They sent me a photo of the plaque but due to copyright issues I was asked not to share it. This film highlights a problem that I think is quite common in that memorial plaques are often not at the site of where someone’s ashes have been dispersed which make it difficult for both documentary makes as well as those of us doing family research to find these memorials without guidance from the crematorium staff. However, in this case I do think Hilda deserves a more prominent memorial but not necessarily at the ashes site, a blue plaque on the wall perhaps? The problem is that these things need funding and the BMHS doesn’t have the funds.

Good morning Paul. I am not sure if anything will come of it but after watching this video last night I sent a link to the British Music Hall Society and asked them if it was within their remit to supply memorials for celebrities who have passed away but through lack of relatives or no money in the Estate at the time of their passing. I have had a lovely reply from a lady this morning who confirmed that it certainly is. However, she told me that they have a huge backlog of Blue Plaques and cemetery memorials to deal with at the moment but that she will raise the issue at their forthcoming Committee Meeting. I have thanked her for agreeing to do this and asked her to let me know of any decision. I will of course let you know if I hear anything further. Keep up the good work, we need to remember these past TV, Theatre and film celebrities who have now fallen out of the public consciousness and bring their names to a new audience.
@interestingplaces12 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, I hope they supply something maybe a little brick with her name on
@rivaest382 жыл бұрын
Update on Hylda’s memorial. The issue was raised at a British Music Hall Society Committee Meeting this week and they agreed to look into the situation. I have had a further update from them and was told that they have been in contact with the cemetery and there is a memorial to Hylda. They kindly sent me a photo that the cemetery supplied to them and I was instructed to delete it once I had seen it due to copyright reasons which I have done. I can tell you that the plaque is attached to a concrete curb stone along the edge of the path flanking the dispersal plot. Now this should have been visible but as it is in a line with many others it could be easily overlooked. It is possible that the area you were looking in Paul was not the correct one but although the photo didn’t show much background it did look (as far as I could tell) to be the area in which you were looking. Are there any members of this group that live near the cemetery who are willing to go and have another look and try and take a photo? If so, please try and find it just to bring this thread to a conclusion. If you visit during working hours on a week day, hopefully there would be a member of staff who would be willing to point it out to you. Members of this group might just like to know that I was told there was a member of the BMHS Committee present at this weeks meeting who confirmed they had been at Hylda’s funeral. I have no details of you this person was and it matters not other than to say it’s nice to know there was someone from the BMHS at Hylda’s funeral and she wasn’t forgotten on that day.

Yes Hylda was a comedienne from a different time. Genuinely funny and a good example of a northern battleaxe. Her style of comedy is sadly now lost to us and that is a pity for us all. I hope she got to ride the underworld railway whilst wearing a big girls blouse and that she finally got a little hand put on her watch.😊

@nigeldavey10432 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, you forgot one very important catchphrase of Hylda's, namely " Oo I must get a little hand put on this watch ". She was one of those performers to whom the funny remark/riposte seemed to come naturally. The reason she has a place commemorating her in Twickenham is that she spent her last days in the CTBF home in ba k of Twickenham Green, the sister home being in Wokingham. My dear old dad was in the Wokingham home before he passed and was cremated at the local Crematorium at the request of the staff . I then took his ashes to Hordle in Hampshire where he had been living in retirement to place him next to mum's ashes. I would think something similar happened in Hyla Baker's case. Her first TV sitcom was "Our House " and was made at ABC TV at Teddington Lock. A stones throw really from where she died and where my dad worked from 1960 until Maggie Thatcput them out of business and he took retirement a couple of years early. I knew Hylda when I was a youngster and can say she was a lovely lady. My dad ? Oh he was on Security there from day one and eventually became the inspiration for Benny Hill's " Ernie, the fastest Milkman in the West. Well I've rambled on enough. I've just found your vlogs and will look for more. They bring back many old memories to this old geezer now living a long way from Twickenham and Teddington. 👍

I have family who lived in Farnworth/Newbury. They relayed tales of knowing Hilda Baker at one time, aparently her family owned a fish and chip shop on Plodder Lane just below Marsh Lane/Bradford Road. When she was in town with her family it's said that she often helped out serving in the shop and surprised many regulars by serving those who just of the bus were picking up fish and chips or a bag of chips to walk home with. When I was in the UK 3 years ago I drove that way and remember thinking about this but can't recall if I saw a shop still there or not.
