I went there from 1975 - 1981 & graduated w/ two degrees. I couldn't believe it when I heard Author relate the piano scenario...one time I was in a piano practice room, playing "honky tonk" as I also called it (hymns), and the door opened, and Joe Combs looked at me and simply said, "I'll see you in my office". I made the appointment, of course, with fear and trembling. He asked me why I made the appointment, I told him why, He just said, "Well, it sounded like rock music to me", with a stern look. That was pretty much it, no demerits, as I recall. Anyway, the influence of that place had sold me some serious "wooden nickels", as I called them, and it took many years for me to realize just how deeply these false values, methods, and beliefs had become entrenched. By nothing other than the sheer GRACE OF GOD, I have been, and continue in pastoral ministry since then, for 43 years and counting. Watching this video was like steeping into a time warp, into the past. We probably passed by each other, took a class, or sat next to each other at some point. btw, my name is Marc Sweet. If anyone remembers me, feel free to reach me at lylemarcsweet@gmail.com

This was a great interview! I grew up IFB. I got chewed up, spit out, then thrown under the bus, for which I'm thankful, else I might still be there! Thank you for sharing this and your other videos.

I really enjoyed this talk. I was in a FBC for many years and learned a lot. I found the same problem of doing to much it almost drove me crazy. I knew my pastor loved me and he wanted the best for me. Now I pastor a Independent Baptist church. I've enjoyed you interviews with people.

Thanks for your kind remarks - I agree with you regarding some of the positive traits of the IFB experience. Both my wife and I appreciate those aspects and are grateful for the experiences. The negative side is what marks out many in the IFB movement, such as the extremes in preaching, unscriptural demands, and over-emphasis on some things while neglecting others. My greatest concern, looking back, was the lack of biblical worship and the exaltation of man. Glad to see you survived that experience and continue to serve the Lord .

Just some constructive criticism, it might be a good idea to establish the guest’s fundamentalist credentials so no one can just say you’re a hater. I see that the people your guest likes agree with the HAC positions. I think that would establish his credibility.

I heard, while in the dining hall at HAC recently during the 50th, that Dr. Godfrey was there. What was said at the table was something about not knowing why he was there.

That would have been interesting to see - I had contact with him over the scandal, apparently the church settled with him for damages of some sort. He did not want to make a video about it. He spoke highly of the new pastor. I considered going, but there is no way my schedule and family responsibilities would permit such a trip at this time.

You know man, when I was younger, I used to be preoccupied by my experience in the IFB growing up too. I grew up in Fundamentalism, and yeah there was some disillusionment, but over the years I've come to really appreciate so much from that world. I like that they call it a "movement", and tbh it's a lot better than many other such movements within Evangelical Christianity. Some of the best people, and to be very honest MOST of the best Christians, most loving, open minded and genuine I've ever known, I didn't meet in parachurch ministry, or nondenom churches through many years of experience there (including years spent in the Christian "subculture" scene), they have been fundamental Baptists. I love my friends and family from that world, and I've gone to a Baptist church now again for years, after deciding I was done years before. I would just challenge you all to keep an open mind and heart towards our brothers and sisters in the Lord, no matter what denomination or sect they belong to. Also some of the most truly forgiving and welcoming people I've met too, not kidding.

I would agree, but remember we are not dealing with normal "fundamentalists" when speaking of the IFB in the Hyles mode of thinking. Not only did Jack Hyles foster a very exclusive attitude when it came to other denominations, he introduced several concepts not held by traditional Fundamentalists. These were not trifles, but affected the very gospel itself - namely, that repentance of sin is NOT part of the gospel message, but a backdoor to works salvation. The KJV only position taken to the extreme, in that one must be saved using KJV verses, or it is ineffective - another soul-damning doctrine. So, I am not condemning all IFB people with a broad brush, only exposing those promoting the serious errors of what I call "hyper-fundamentalism'.

1:00 Almost went to Bible College . Graduated 1977 La Porte County Indiana. Family was not in favor of any Religious school, including Notre Dame which had a good Architectural School but my gpa was not good enough. Went to Purdue North Central and then Purdue Lafayette in 1979. Involved in IVCF till Graduated in 1982 . Almost lost my faith in 'deeper life' practices. Oneness Pentecostalism was a big confusion and stumbling block. I guess despite my problems with IBC, Charismatics, 7th Day, Oneness doctrines, GOD gave me a good job in Intel Community Wash DC. Spent many years at MBC ( Lon Solomon ) before David Platt took over.

I believe I got Saved by simple Trust in Christ for Eternal Salvation, by the witness of a Lutheran Camp Counsellor, in Colorado on Friday 23AUG1974 ( 2 weeks after Nixon Resignation ). We were a Presbyterian Choir group invited to the last summer session of Lutheran camp ( Choir director was also chorus director at High School with close ties with Lutheran Church next door, Michigan City IN ) I don't believe this counsellor believed in Eternal Security , but I believe the HOLY SPIRIT impressed this precious truth over a year before I 1st attended a local IBC church which had HAC students. I don't recall ever 'praying' 'getting baptised' , Altar Calls, repenting of any vices ( still in somewhat innocence of certain realities of sin ) Had very little knowledge of Bible except Lord's Prayer, 23rd psalms, Apostles Creed I needed to memorize for Presbyterian confirmation a year earlier. Knew the Basic Chrisitmas / Easter Story ( Movies ) and Got hooked on JC Superstar soundtrack after a church trip to see movie in sept 1973 . Up to that moment in 1974, I had no concept of Salvation ( though I had some oldtime faith from aunt / uncle Hjelmar / Nadine Swanson ( Evangelical Covenant Church Wahoo NE ) Theodore Epp ( Back to Bible ) was one of the ministers who preacher his funeral in July 1969 ( afew days before the launch of Apollo 11 ) My dad and his twin sister attended many camp meetings ( ? Billy Sunday ) in Iowa during depression , my grandmother in heaven was a Godly Methodist . Family was active in Methodist then Presbyterian but were very secular ( Darwin / Big Bang / Carl Sagen .... ) There was conflict in those early days. In 1976, got into serious Bible Study, primarily on Bible Prophecy, and began to listen to Billy Graham, Hal Lindsey, Jack Van Impe, then hear of Hyles ( Sword of the LORD ) Oliver Green, Lester Roloff, Charles Halff ( CJM) , Chaplain Ray.\, J Veronon McGee. Most of my contemporaries in local IBC didn't seem to have the hunger for Bible Doctrine I got mostly through Radion ( WMBI, WYCA ) and sound Evangelical Books .

@@jeffdollar1646 James Stephen Andrews, just look for the good looking guy. I was in the jail ministry. I think I remember you. I wrote the first "Chester Drawers" letter asking Doctor Evans if I could go home early for Christmas. I wrote it the day he announced in chapel that no one better write him a note asking to go home early for Christmas because they couldn't. It was funny and he read it the next day in chapel.

I am thankful for my time at Hyles-Anderson. I needed that at that time in my life. Looking back I see the issues and wonder how I survived without becoming bitter or resentful. I have found a lot of folks are really angry with the IFB group and many have turned on the Lord as well. It is sad. No regrets, but I would do things differently now. LOL! Yeah, now that I am 66 and have the wisdom of the ages...where have I heard that before?

I was there for about two months in the late 90's. As a woman I felt confined and sheltered by what I was allowed to do. As famous as this church and college became, I can truly see where Satan came in and touched many people there. I know many people that have graduated from there and even taught there, and they are great, Godly people. As much weirdness that I felt, I regret to this day not finishing there because I was weak in many areas and I still am. Question: how much have y'all prayed for these men used by Satan to get rid of an institution that turns people our to win souls to Christ all over the world?
