I'm 70 years old and grew up with all these beautiful voices and groups. It breaks my heart that as we lose one after the other they are not being replaced and young people are turning more and more away from the beautiful songs of praise. Even my granddaughter who sings in our cowboy church band would prefer to sing the newer stuff if given a choice. As far as the beautiful harmony like the Statler, young people turn away from it in favor of wanting to be the only one in the spotlight. 😪

I always loved the Statler Brothers. When my husband and i were 1st married we watched the Statler every Saturday night. There wonderful. We will miss them so much. They stopped singing when Harold went to sleep in Jesus. Yes they will surely be missed.

All I know, is when you are feeling down, a good dose of gospel music is sure a good way to pick your spirits up. Vestal Goodman is a sample of Angelic Music. Just watching her you can see her beautiful spirit. The Jordonaires, The Cathedrals, J.D. Sumner and all the greats. I put my headphones on and tuned out all distractions.

Listening to Statlers singing "Amazing Grace"...back in the early 1970s when my wife & I were in our 20s we sang in a Gospel Group called....Amazing Grace!! This just brings it all back to me...we loved being able to serve God in our own little way....Great days!!

I totally agree with you. The Statler Brothers have always been one of my favorites. The Oak Ridge Boys are a favorite, also. They are up there with The Cathedrals; and I didn't start listening to them until about a year and a half ago.

I once asked Ernie Haas if he ever sang with Vestal. He told me he did once in a tribute to the Statler Brothers. He suggested I look on KZbin...but I never could find it. Till now! Thanks so much for posting.

Thanks for posting this. I was in the audience that night. It was the Statler Brothers' Easter Show for 1994. Vestal Goodman, Glenn Payne, George Younce and Roger Bennett are all gone now. I went to MANY Statler Show tapings in 1993 and 1994. GREAT FUN!!

@@sandrasharp2934 The more I think about it, I am not 100% certain. I THOUGHT it was 1994 but I think their show went til 1997 and I believe I was there during the final year of it, so it could be '97. Twenty-plus years does a lot to one's memory! ;-)

I sang with quartets since 1957, I sang the bass part, when I heard Bill gaither was forming the statesmen, by far my favorite but he wrote me back the position had been filled, I thought i could do it as one of the best bass singers but it never happened, also no one is as good as they think they are, I sang with the reagents. claiborne quartet, gospel truth, then I retired to sing at hospitals, I'm now 79, I can still hit a n flat below low c and stay with jd.

I hate to question someone’s voracity, but the Statesmen Quartet was not formed by Bill Gaither, it was formed in 1948 by Hovie Lister, who remained with and ran the quartet for 53 years. I also looked up the Regents Quartet, the Claiborne Quartet and Gospel Truth Quartet and found a couple of regional quartets (2 in California and 1 in Florida) but nobody named Carl York. Bass singers of that era should be household names, but that’s one I’ve never heard.
