Hymn of Promise / Heaven's Gift - lyrics, chord charts

If you are interested in an accompaniment/instrumental (karaoke) version of this, let me know in the comments so I can get to work on that. I wrote the first chorus first, starting with the phrase "I give them to you, Lord . . . ," thinking of the many memorials I've been to over the years. But then I realized it needed an introduction to make sense. The words came easily enough, but I wanted music in 3/4 time that would be familiar. I first tried ""Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing," which might have been okay, but then I remembered Natalie Sleeth's "Hymn of Promise" began playing in my head - and I reflected on how many funerals and memorials we had sung it at. It was just right, the sweet strains of that tune were simply the best way to begin. With a verse and chorus, it occurred to me that every service of commitment of a loved one is a natural invitation to a personal commitment as well. So the song flowed into the second verse and chorus, creating a sequence of: (A) God is the Giver of Life, and those we Love, (B) So we give them "back" to God at funerals (and baptisms, and the like). (C) God's greatest gift of all was not just "a life," but Life which is TRUE LIFE as God gave Himself to us in Jesus, and abides in us through the Holy Spirit. (D) Making the fullest, final commitment that of my own mortal life to the One Who Is Life Itself. Because, after all, it was God who chose to give me life in the beginning, and I will never be whole until I choose the Lord of Life as MY Lord and Savior in return.
