She’s from my town, Concord Massachusetts. Her father is a very wealthy man with connections that got her where she is. She was given a lot audio equipment and was pampered. Our town has a large underground music scene and she claims that she wasn’t accepted since she was too out there which is bullshit. She’s claiming to be a bedroom pop artist since that all she could make with her equipment, which is obviously not true. Everybody in our town is very mad at her for saying we weren’t supportive of her.

"Bedroom pop" and "lo-fi pop" are marketing tools, now. You've got to be kidding yourself if you think these rich kids are in that genre for anything other than the money. Look at Frankie Cosmos, for example - she's the poster child of this movement, and she's the heir to millions with celebrity parents. The same thing is happening with the reverb-heavy Mac DeMarco clones, too, like boy pablo. It's happened since the dawn of music, rich kids ride somebody else's wave and get dollar off of it, whilst the innovators get table scraps. Great vid, man!

There'll probably be a rising fetishization of the early 00's culture + music, much like how we're seeing trends mirror the 90's now, so probably some guitar-based music that mirrors that era. I can see shoegaze making a comeback and 'soundcloud/sadboy rap' will continue its upward trajectory.
@BeenjLike6 жыл бұрын
I thought the early 2010's was more of a dream pop bubble, but I get what you mean. Shoegaze didn't really hit the heights that this whole "bedroom pop" movement has, though, even though excellent shoegaze albums came out (Distressor, mbv, etc). That's a good point on the part geography plays with music. It seems like only certain non-Western albums reach any level of indie fame (Exuma, Fishmans, etc) and Pitchfork pat themselves on the back once a year by reviewing a token Latin American or African music compilation. I hate how all non-Western music is boxed into this "world music" genre, too. At least a lot of Korean and Japanese music is penetrating the West at the moment.

I’ve been following clairo for a min, bro. She even liked my tweet about her last May. I’m deadass a fan but I will say it’s very, very odd how she’s grown so much in such a sort amount of time. Pretty Girl is good but is it really 6 million views in a couple months good? Like honestly... is it? I’ve seen literally no modern artist release a semi decent track & get millions of views in a couple of months or Big interviews & performances with some of the biggest artists out rn... It’s very odd but I’m a fan... I honestly think she’s a plant tho.

similar thing with Frankie Cosmos. her parents are wealthy actors, but she talks as if she's a struggling artist.
@ffa1bc6 жыл бұрын
Her videos can't even go past eight hundred K of views, and she's been releasing music since like eight years. Clairo got 7.6 million views on her first? track, and probably a few other millions of plays in Facebook and other social media. Frankie's not at fault for being the daughter of two wealthy actors. You don't see her music being shilled everywhere. Case different with Clairo. Shit, even almost every member of the Strokes has a wealthy background, and their music was shilled as fuck in the 2000s, but you don't see people pointing fingers at them.
@roundandround2296 жыл бұрын
Nakamura. While it’s true that Julian and Albert had rich fathers, the rest were not wealthy on that stand-point. Julian had a horrible relationship with his father and had to work as a bartender. Albert’s father helped them out with equipment, but they never went to him for the stuff. Julian persuaded models to go to their shows so they could have an audience to spread the word - so I think that’s where it started. They played at dive bars, and such. The Strokes actually held a lot of talent though, and knew how to market themselves.
@ffa1bc6 жыл бұрын
Bamboo Latte While I don't discuss the point of their relationship, and whether it was good or bad, I do discuss about a link being there. Whether Julian's father influence was used is something we can't confirm or disregard. Of course they were absolutely hyped by music magazines and reviewers though. While I'm not a huge fan of Cosmos, my point is that people have huge double standards regarding musicians. Whether Cosmo's or Julian's strings to their families were used, then again, it's something you won't know (unlike Clairo *cough*), people will inmediatly jump into anything they don't like, and find any mediocre excuse to justify that attitude, even when The Strokes, thanks to their marketing, were shilled even way more than Clairo will ever be, obviously making the assumption that's a bad thing.
@roundandround2296 жыл бұрын
Nakamura. I honestly don’t see Clairo surviving as an artist, because she’s as bland as they come. There’s an influx of indie artists right now, and she doesn’t stick out at all. Especially with how boring and bad her live shows are.

I’ve been a fan of Clairo since her early bandcamp days and although I’ve been happy to see her succeed, I have been scratching my head on how rapid her fame has been coming since she pretty much only has about 2 big “mainstream” songs. After finding out this info, it’s had me torn whether to like her or not because of the honesty of her “indie” come up, it just feels deceitful for some reason.

If you read the video description for Pretty Girl, she says it's a collaboration she did with a record company for charity. My guess is either the record company or Clairo/her father paid to promote the video. I also noticed that Bubblegum was re-uploaded to a random KZbin channel and had close to 900k views before pretty girl was uploaded which probably contributed to her "blowing up". I do really like her and I hope to see what's to come.

i never knew she considered herself a self made artist. when i first heard pretty girl, i read the description & saw she was working for a music company. & then when i saw she performed at lalapolooza i was like oh wow damn already ? cause everybody knew only one song of hers.

This isn't suprising the whole indie thing is a lot more compelling, rappers do this shit all the time being fake independent whilst being signed. Just don't lie to your audience, I honestly can't be a fan of someone who does that.

Y'all so if she actually have access to so many resources then her whole set at the OC observatory had to have been fake. She presented herself as being like an independent nobody with no crew or sound engineers. Her audio kept messing up and it looked like she was controlling the instrumentals from her iPhone. She was literally using an aux cord to conduct her entire set. I was questioning why would she didn't have the numerous crew members just control the music for her so she could focus on having a great set. I think she did it on purpose to perpetuate her image of being self made and independent. She made her set shitty even though the venue had a whole team of people that could have helped her.

I never liked her music much nor her bland singing, people are only going goo goo gaga over her because she's 'cute' or whatever. That's just my take on it, but hey, good for her that she's doing well. I just don't see her as anything special as far as her music go....... and she can't make tracks longer than 2 minutes and with horrible sound quality. But I suppose that's the 'hipster' thing to do these days.

It was round 2010, me and “Clairo” as you call her were making a living forging prescriptions and flipping the meds, selling them to upstate rich art college kids with fake depression and not enough skill to make their own forgeries. On the side me and Clairo made dreamy Lo fi bedroom pop, and for a while there everything was pretty good. I wanted to take the sound to something a bit more unique, like post punk eurobeat fusion or eurobeat trap fuck I love eurobeat, but Clairo wanted to keep the fake depressed low effort tumblr-esque “Daddy buy me a diy aesthetic” sound. We came to violence over these arguments and at the crux of this Clairo decided to snitch on our whole operation and abscond with the money, and all of the copies of the music. This fucker finessed me out of all my fucking money and all the music we created. I hardly got out of there before the many pharmaceutical company operatives burnt down our low rent scummy appartment. For the past 7 years I have been training and making badly put together lo fi hip hop beats for 24/7 anime streams on KZbin to play and subsequently for XXXtentacion to rap over. If I ever do see that fucking snake I will fucking end her I swear to god I will demolish her in armed and unarmed combat I will put her in a fucking casket 6 feet under

i found out about pretty girl yesterday and i was amazed after checking out her channel, since i saw that she was on tour and could even go to coachella... i was wondering just how exactly could this (honestly quite cute) girl be singing a self-made song in her bedroom one day, and then perform on stage at coachella the next. im glad to finally find out the answer just now, but at the same time im kinda sad that its highly possible shes not as independent and genuine as she appears to be. i thought i had found a rare, wholesome gem in the vast sea of retro 80s or 90s type music artists. but i still like her music. the only thing thats slightly changed is my view on clairo as a person.

I knew something seemed off about Clairo the first time I watched "Pretty Girl". Her sound is super generic imo so I figured she exploded with popularity because of her looks and aesthetic. It's interesting knowing that there's so much more to it.
@andrespepper869 Жыл бұрын
after so many years, and recently with his latest release (blouse), do you think his sound is still generic?
