It was brilliant to see the original three back together! I'm impressed by the range of such a high mileage Model S and its aged really well - also there is no way it cost £250 to go there and back I've done Cornwall to London and back for £90 in an EV (also had you plugged in while going for toilet and coffee there would have been more than enough). But still really enjoyed the episode and look forward to more!
@MyRegardsToTheDodo7 ай бұрын
It's not that old, it's a 2017 model. We also don't know how many new batteries and engines it had. Alex said in his previous video about this car that it's still under warranty, which means he can get a new battery or engine if these fail. The previous owner might have done that more than once. Prices for electricity have skyrocketed recently, like in the last year or two. So depending when you did your journey in an EV, this might be the reason for the price difference.
@insanityideas7 ай бұрын
There were loads of ways they could have done the trip without hassle (just do what the satnav tells you to regarding charging), but that would have been a boring video. Instavolt is also one of the most expensive charging networks, filling that Tesla fully twice would have cost £148 to do approx 250 miles. Had they used Tesla chargers it would be £70, charging at home before setting off would have got it down to £7 to fill up. I cant see a diesel car doing 600 miles for £25, but to be clear they quoted that £25 as the cost of driving half way, which sounds fair, and is marginally cheaper than that Tesla, a newer smaller model 3 would use 2/3rds of the amount of electricity the model S uses.
@faisalfaruque28497 ай бұрын
@@insanityideas Spot on. Teskla superchargers are still somewhat reasonably priced - they could have also taken out an Elli sub to charge on 3rd party networks for about 60p a kwh vs the 8--90p instavolt/osprey charge
@craigmck72717 ай бұрын
@@insanityideas I don't believe it would have been £250. The car would easily do 3m/kwh, so 600 miles = ~200kwh. Even at Instavolts ridiculous charge of £0.85 that is £170. £250 is the best part of 300kwh, so he's suggesting the car only got 2m/kwh, it's not an Audi :)

Why is electric charging soo expensive in the UK? Obviously most people would charge at home, but when the Mrs charges her car at a tesla super charger from about 10% to about 80% it takes about 20-25 mins and costs about $35 (that is that is somewhere around 200 miles). Scrolled down to see if anyone EV minded has looked at this video. Yes I like the 3 are back, wohoo! And I am somewhat pleasantly surprised by the first 20ish minutes. And then, a statement that it costs 80 quid to do in electric what you can do in 30 quid diesel. How? That pack has say 75kWh, and has been fully discharged. Supercharger price is around 0.5£/kWh, so 40£. If Alex had charged at home, would have been 10£, which you can not do in diesel, for a total roundtrip cost of around 50 quid. Diesel 60 quid. No story, nothing to talk about. How did we get to nearly 200 quid to go back home? I can't imagine how to spend 200£ on electricity on a 500mile trip, even with bad weather, AC, speed +VAT, we're talking of 400kWh worth of money, 1500-2000 miles, more if you hypermile. /rant over, glad to see Ethan, Jack and Alex back
@aragorn0847 ай бұрын
@@dragosmihai3489 looked like they started at an Osprey charger, which is potentially 80p/kWh, but the numbers still don't add up. I think he's added up both charges, which is essentially double counting the cost. You either start full and count what it takes to get back to full, or you start empty, fill and run it empty. Realistically if they managed 4mi/kWh, the 268miles they drove will have used 67kwh at a cost of say £46. So a bit more than the diesel, but most EV owners would have started with a full charge from cheap home electricity and the outward trip would have costed a fiver.

One little trick that I learned when driving Teslas for work, when you're approaching a relatively long/steep downhill section, get the car up to your desired speed, and when you start going downhill, shift it into neutral and just coast down the hill, that way the car uses literally zero energy for propulsion and since it is a relatively heavy car, gravity helps it keep the speed up. It is a bit tricky to smoothly shift back into drive once you start dropping below your desired speed but with some practice it becomes second nature
@JoeHardman7 ай бұрын
Why not set cruise control to the desired speed and let the battery regen downhill? Then you're putting energy back into the battery rather than wearing your brakes. I've gained back >1% battery in certain instances doing this. Obviously it depends on the elevation change and speed.

@@Twin.motors For the sake of argument say you only have 1 longer drive per month, that means an EV range will be enough for you 96% of the time, sounds great right? Hell let's say you only have 4-5 longer drives per year: a family member situation, taking a friend to the airport, a summer trip etc then it's 98.6%. If your fridge ran 98.6% of the time, but every other month your house fills up with stench of spoiled food when it shuts off for the day. Is that fine or is that not fit for purpose? I have nothing against EVs, I love my PEV and for some people an EV makes a fantastic choice as maybe a second or third car. But let's be realistic about costs and practicality: 99.9% of the time an EV will cost a lot more in depreciation (30-50% more depreciation) and/or battery replacement or motor costs alone (8 year average lifespan for a battery) vs any possible savings. Plus your daytime electricity goes up by an average of £40 per month switching to an EV tariff which owners always forget to factor in. I mean the car in this video had roughly £60k in repairs done to it and needs another £14k battery imminently (that's 3 refurb batteries, 2 motors so far), this negates any fuel saving even if your electricity was 100% free, which of course it isn't. The difference per mile is also more like 8p in an EV home charging vs 11p in a typical diesel, not that big, but the cost per mile with public charging is 2-3x higher in an EV, painful. There are also many hidden costs in EV ownership, coffee/snacks at every 40 min charge stop, imagine you parked up at home and someone invites you to an event or dinner? - you now need to get an Uber as your car won't be charged for another 8 hours. The extra planning/charging time and driving slower means you can't travel when you want and you may be pushed into rush hour or need to factor in hotel costs to stay over night. There may be a broken charger or a queue that completely derails your plans adding extra costs and frustration. Range is also still a major problem. In the winter, if you have multiple stops with heating on, the realistic range drops to around 75-85 miles (search Tesla 75 miles winter). In the summer, it's more like 180 miles on most EVs (60kWh) because most public chargers flat out won't let you charge above 80%. So realistically, you only have 10-80% charge (always subtract 30% from any range test), anything outside that is either not available at all or will cause damage to the battery. Getting 75-85 miles means the car is unusable in winter, but even 180 miles is not enough for most city to city trips in the UK. In a diesel, you can drive to a meeting or an exhibition in Birmingham from Romford and be back to your family for dinner with half a tank left, that's just not possible in an EV. You're looking at 2-5 charge stops depending on weather conditions and probably a hotel. Worst of all of this is the inconsistency: the same trip you've done countless times may suddenly turn into a nightmare because of a broken charger, queue or colder than expected weather, or the car may randomly decide to slow charge at midnight for no apparent reason (as has happened to my Uber driver the other day and he had to sleep in the car). This is before you get to other problems like the daily battery drain and 40% of households not having a drive to home charge, etc. Food for thought :)

Pretty good going for 450k miles! Charging would have been much cheaper at Tesla chargers / at home. Also - pretty sure I saw the Saab stop for diesel…? Anyway - entertaining to see the trio back together 👍

That model s would have FREE supercharging actually, the comment about spending £250 is nonsense

Yes the Saab stopped for diesel for 5 minutes, hassle free at one of the many fuel stations. I'm not anti EV but the public infrastructure is terrible
@willrossetti23607 ай бұрын
@@bencocker7487 I agree the public infrastructure is not great but the Tesla network is great - I use it and never had any problems, never had to queue. It’s an entertainment show so I get it doesn’t have to be factual... but it is easy to get from reading to Cornwall and back in a Tesla and pretty cheap, they drove past several Tesla superchargers to go to the expensive and rubbish alternatives. Even in a non Tesla there is a massive fast charging hub just off the M5 at Exeter…

Yeah it definitely is. But what the hell is up with charging prices in the UK? In germany one charge at home would have been around 40€ (40ct/kwh) and on expensive fast chargers around 70€ (75ct/kwh). How the heck does this trip cost them almost 300£? I don't get the math.
@davefitzpatrick48417 ай бұрын
@@steilkurbler4973they could have used Tesla superchargers that are far cheaper, but decided to opt for more expensive chargers 'to show how expensive it is to run a Ev' . There's a good possibility that model s had free supercharging as well, meaning the previous owner of that car ( taxi driver) would have saved around £37,500 over that 450k miles just in fuel alone .
@steilkurbler49737 ай бұрын
@@davefitzpatrick4841 That's propably it. I also find it rather interesting that the car's battery is still in such a good shape after 450k miles, given it's the first one. Even if it had one battery swap it would still be quite good. That's not bad for any kind of vehicle.

I have seen the first video of this high mileage car and he mentioned that it has no free supercharger however it’s a late 16 car so it should have it (till March 17 all Model S and X come with this perk) but it went back to Tesla at some point and they took it out or Tesla found out that it was used as a taxi and they stripped off the free charging. It’s actually not allowed to use free charging cars for business use.

Nerding out in terms of energy; a quarter of tank is about 15 litres, and one litre of diesel is about 10kwh. The Tesla p90d has a nominal capacity of 90kwh, usable capacity is about 82 kwh. So very roughly; The Saab used roughly 150 kwh of energy, the Tesla about 82 kwh.
