Trailer for HyperRogue version 10.2.
HyperRogue on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/342610
The HyperRogue website: www.roguetemple.com/z/hyper/
Selected reviews:
HyperRogue, the non-Euclidean roguelike, is a mind-melting masterpiece [...] It's one of the best games I've played in a long time, which makes it all the more annoying that I could have been playing it for a long time. (Adam Smith, Rock Paper Shotgun)
HyperRogue is a monumental example of a novel concept executed perfectly. (CtrlAltDestroy, honest gamers)
One of the most interesting roguelikes to come around lately (John Harris, @ Play)
Easy to learn, hard to master, impossible to understand. HyperRogue definitely is the one of the best puzzle games I've ever played. (sldav on Metacritic)

Anyone remember an ancient game that came out like in 1997 or so, similar gameplay concept (only it used 2D space) - you were a guy armed with a sword and have to move around a tiled level, but there were cockroaches everywhere. Every step you took, the cockroaches took one step too, like a turn-based strategy game. If you managed to swing your sword or point it at a cockroach that was coming at you, you killed it. If you failed, they killed you. I've been trying to remember the name of this one for AGES.

Sounds like Deadly Rooms of Death (aka DROD). One of the main inspirations in HyperRogue! 1997 must have been a very old version (according to Wikipedia, Webfoot DROD - 1996), there has been a newer, better version (Architect's Edition, 2003) and some sequels (DROD 5: The Second Sky was released in 2014).

@@ZenoRogue DUUUDE. That is it! Amazing, after all these years, I've finally discovered what that game was. I had a demo version that came with a PC Home magazine CD, used to play it on Windows 95, but I never got to purchase the game (I was a kid back then). After a while I lost those old CDs. Thanks for finally solving this mistery for me. Edit: just found out DROD is available for free in the developer's website (Caravel Games), and also that I indeed did play the Webfoot version (different character portrait and awesome MIDI music)! Cheers!

Thanks for a very impressive game that is satisfactory in countless ways. If I have a small complaint, it is that I had to set three non-obvious settings before I got the kind of non-Euclidean game that I have been dreaming of seeing for many years. Here are the settings I found myself wanting to use in order to get a game "like a traditional game except that the curvature of the plane is /slightly/ hyperbolic": * In ”special display modes”/”models of hyperbolic geometry”, choose ”azimuthal equidistant”. [This model works the same way regardless of what the curvature is and feels very natural when you try it. By contrast, the default of using the Poincaré model to display the entire hyperbolic plane in a finite circle is very different from what is used in games based on Euclidean geometry.] * In ”special display modes”/”models of hyperbolic geometry”, set scale factor to something like 1.8. [I find that with a value like 2.3 I am seeing too little of my current surroundings while a value like 1.3 lets me see too much of the non-Euclidean ”weirdness”.] * In ”special game modes” choose ”shoot’em up mode”. [Not only does this make the game less like a board game and more like a conventional computer game, but it also means the player will move a much shorter distance when a button is pressed. Since the hyperbolic plane becomes more and more Euclidean the shorter the distances get, this has the effect of making the game more Euclidean.]

spherical world: the space is finite. euclidean world: the space is infinite but u can enclose biomes hyperbolic world: the space is very large, u cant correctly enclose biomes cuz that would create only a straight and diverging line making lots of biomes each one infinity(doesnt mean it is impossible, cuz there is the camelot that is finite, but at the same way it still very big inside)

@ZenoRogue

There are some modes in HyperRogue which are not roguelikes (e.g., racing, shmup, puzzle/exploration) although they are less developed. (And also a cheat mode.) Recently we have released Bringris, which is a non-Euclidean game similar to Tetris: zenorogue.itch.io/bringris There are also quite a lot of small-ish existing games, and quite a lot of interesting bigger games in development -- see the list here: medium.com/@ZenoRogue/non-euclidean-geometry-and-games-fb46989320d4

I play on mobile. I hear that the gold version adds more lands over the free version, what are those lands?
@ZenoRogue
@ZenoRogue 9 ай бұрын
In the past, the gold version was updated more frequently, so it could have more lands; today they are usually updated at the same pace (slow, because many new features make more sense on PC than on Android). A new version should be released soon, but no new lands are currently planned (only new tilings, land structures and the crossbow mode).

I love this game. I hate this game. First of all this is one of the most absorbing turn based experiences you can find. The gameplay at first is so casual and carefree. BUT THEN the real problems assault you. There are entirely too many mobs in this game. You will be swarmed and killed very quickly the second you collect ten treasures. It would be great if your weapons would reliably upgrade but you're mostly pigeonholed into the single space attack. To make matters worse you cannot make an offensive move onto a square. Your character is perpetually defensive. It's extremely frustrating. The orb mechanics are also bad. They engage the second you collect them whether they would be tactical at the moment or not. You can play in the orb activation mode but only if you want to collect more than triple the treasures required to level up. Ridiculous. Also the gui of this game is inhibitory and far too technical with almost no explanations. As long as we're talking about user friendliness a labe on the orbs detailing their abilities either automatically or after a short time period would help players understand what they do. Simple fixes would make this game so much more fun. 1) orb activation mode either standard or without the more than triple treasure requirements. 2) the player is always at the offensive advantage and can always win the space. The only way to lose is to be outnumbered wherein two mobs can attack all the spaces available to the player. 3) reduce the number of mobs? 4) allow orbs to be activated by consuming their corresponding treasures. 5) smarten the GUI and enhance the player friendly communication of options. 6) Permanent weapon upgrades 7) better friendly AI that will move out of the spaces you wish to occupy. This could be easily achieved with a space-swapping AI. 8) destructable obstacles in any level where the player can be cornered. (Like the living cave) 9) ability to warp to the red hallway in exchange for a large amount of treasure. 10) wider fields of view in the optional world projections. I think just these changes will turn hyperrogue into a much more fun and adventurous experience, rather than it's current skill wall. If you made all these changes and even called it 'wimp mode'. I would play the hell out of it.
@ZenoRogue
@ZenoRogue 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments! Regarding orbs -- you can always right-click an Orb to learn what it does. This works on Orbs on the map, active Orbs, and also monsters and maps. Most friendly creatures do switch spaces, so I am not sure what you mean here. There are also options for wider fields of view. The problem with your "wimp mode" suggestions is that different people find different aspects of the game too difficult, and it would be hard to find one that is good for everyone. There were some suggestions about a custom mode where various balance factors could be adjusted. For now, there is a cheat mode which can be used to simulate some of these effects.
