This version of "Hyperspace" from the game "Star Control II" is from the 3DO port (1994) and is actually Burke Treischmann's remix of the original version composed by Riku Nuottajärvi for the MS-DOS game (1992).

@josephoberlander4 жыл бұрын
I used to as well, but the 3DO version was recorded in the same studios a year later, on pretty much the same hardware. The original composer said that this song was a close recreation of the original studio tapes. Which were certainly used as a reference point. Here's the problem: 1992. Sound hardware was limited to Sound Blaster and similar sound cards. This meant a 2 channel at most 8 bit DAC with 11-16 voices. So you had to ocsillate rapidly to approximate chords and FM synth waveforms. It's also why old digitized voices of the era are such junk. The studios used 16 bit synths and professional equipment. Typically 3-4 synths, for certain a Roland D50, and a Roland R8 drum machine at the same time. The 3DO had a 16 bit sound chip with 8 channels and could capture about half of what was being played, and also had CD audio as a backup if required. The intro, btw, is 4ths minmicking the Star Trek intro, then diverging off in the opposite direction downwards. Its why its so chatchy. If you want to recreate this, set your synth to fm synth/saw lead mixed with synth choir. It creates that nice shimmery outer space sound. So if you want to play the game closer to the original music, select the 3DO music. I personally hate the 3DO voices, though - I leave those off.

Jem, that was mentioned in the game, though I cannot recall. *checking wiki*. The most striking feature of HyperSpace is the different properties electromagnetic radiation has within it; HyperSpace's different physical constants cause the speed of light to be much greater than the speed of light in TrueSpace (possibly more than 4,000 times greater). Observers in HyperSpace thus perceive electromagnetic radiation as "red-shifted", as the increased speed of propagation of light waves causes their wavelengths to become longer. *continued ramble* I thought it might've been due to the background microwave radiation shifting into the visible light spectrum, but I wasn't sure.

Imagine if the Gems from Steven Universe existed in the Star Control universe. How would HyperSpace's laws affect their bodies?
@tehdawson2 жыл бұрын
It would only be redshifted if you were moving away. Otherwise, all the light would be blueshifted, with wavelengths getting shorter relative to how you are perceiving it. And yes, the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) would be brought into the red side of visible spectrum, also due to blueshift.

Love this track, reminds me of just going around exploring planets and stuff without a care in the world... then the game kindly informed me there was a stupid time limit on the story when it was already too late, and the game was unbeatable. Took awhile for game designers to figure out how to do nonlinear sandbox games well, and this is a great historical example of a badly failed attempt at one.

I mean, the game seemed pretty clear from the start, that you were working on borrowed time. I mean, maybe if you weren't paying attention or you expected something different, but the game never gives you any reason to think you're not on a time limit, almost all the other resources in the game are limited.

Man, I played the original Star Control 2 on the PC, and that game's hyperspace music became one my favorite songs of all time, it is much more space-themed than this and makes much better traveling music.
