Magic! Just kidding. I put a lot of time and effort into presenting the material as clearly and efficiently as possible. I plan it all out before recording; I write an outline, then a script, decide on examples, plan the diagrams, record and animate everything, then edit out anything that still feels too off-topic once I can see the whole thing together. Giving a lecture in real time is way harder; it's easy to ramble or choose lousy examples on the fly, and you can't edit afterwards! Please share the video with your classmates; if you thought the class made the topic way more complicated than it needed to be, chances are they feel exactly the same way! Whoa, you just helped me find an error... It should say SOLUTE particles (e.g. the salt) are preventing the water from moving. The inside of that first cell has very few molecules of SOLUTE (salt) getting in the way of the water molecules, not solvent. So, there are many unobstructed water molecules that can move around. 300,000+ viewers and you're the first person to spot this. Thank you! -BOGO

what type of a cell is being surrounded? How did the salt molecules get in there to begin with? sorry if this is a stupid question
@BOGObiology4 жыл бұрын
It's not a stupid question at all. This is just a generic cell, but there are many good examples of this. A concrete example might be a red blood cell surrounded by the liquid portion of the blood, known as plasma. Red blood cells work best when they are not shriveled up, but not so full of liquid that they burst. Because of this, the concentration of the plasma is pretty darn close to that inside the cells. However, if you gave someone a big IV infusion of water, the plasma would suddenly be much less salty than the red blood cells. Bad. Or, if you gave them an infusion of seawater, the plasma would suddenly be much more salty than the red blood cells. Also bad. I'll leave you to figure out what might happen to the RBCs in a very hypotonic and a very hypertonic solution. TLDR; there's a very good reason IV fluids are made to be the same salinity as red blood cells. A less microscopic example (please, please don't try this) might be if you put a goldfish in seawater, or a salt water flounder in a pond. Equally disastrous. Hope this helps! Love, BOGO PS. Are you the pope?

I have bio test tmw but I seem a bit confused still. I see a pattern. If the arrow is going out it’s always hypertonic but if it goes in it’s always hypotonic and if it’s equal on both it’s isotonic? I swear I’ll fail😞✊🏻
@BOGObiology5 жыл бұрын
Hi Yujuan! Make sure you're really, really specific. "Hypertonic" doesn't just mean "something that is salty", it means "something that is MORE salty than something else". A hypertonic solution with a cell in it means that the solution is "more salty than the cell is". Water molecules are helpful little things and will pass through the cell membrane in whatever direction will make the solutions on both sides equally salty. If the outside solution is hypertonic relative to the cell, the water molecules inside the cell will say "Oh no! The outside is much, much saltier! I should go there to help balance things out!". Does that help?
