For those who don't have access to a good cable machine: perform lateral raises lying on your side on an incline bench with dumbbels. This puts tension right at the bottom and makes peak contraction easier, just like it is on the cable.

Hey, about that extra challange at the bottom on machine vs dumbell. You should give a shot what John Meadows incorporates in his programs - partial dumbell lateral raises. You can grab much heavier dumbell than regular raises and do high rep partials on the bottom range of motion. It literally smokes your delts. You definately should give these a try, gonna love those. Its perfect when there is not much equipment in your gym and you want some extra edge over regular lateral raises.

I think shoulder abduction is a bit more complicated for the position where the mid delt is stronger due to the scapular humeral rythm.I think it's above 45 degrees of abduction where mid delt hits that mid length position.

Sir. What do you think about dumbbell press? Does it work all the three heads? But i think mostly it targets on the front deltoid. Do we have to do this compound muscle or only isolate exercise separately for each deltoid?

I had the same problem, either Front Delts or TRAPS. Normal Standing Dumbbell Laterals never did anything for my side delts, nor did Barbell OH Presses with 195 lbs. or Dumbbell OH Presses with the 85's. To target the side deltoid head, you need tension that's targeted OUT TO THE SIDE. This is more easily done with cables and bands. If you are gonna use dumbbells for Lateral raises, it's best to do one side at a time leaning on something at an angle (incline bench or preacher bench) or use a modified Dumbbell OH Press where you're actually pressing the dumbells OUT DIAGONALLY, rather than up.

*Joey, excellent video, thanks! But I have a question... maybe completely off topic, sorry!* If I do 2 or 3 press exercises for shoulders on "push days" and no isolations at all on push days for several weeks/complete training block, will it still gives me decent overall shoulder growth? I want to experiment with it since I have been doing press and iso work always in one workout and never done them on seperated days!
@HypertrophyCoach

Individual dependent. Some people that will be adequate to have their delts looking the way they want. Others, not so much. For me, my delts look like shit if I do that. I generally need two sessions a week of isolated rear and side delt work to have that “round” delt look.
@Beats-By-Anthony
@Beats-By-Anthony 3 жыл бұрын
@@HypertrophyCoach Thanks Joey!👍🏻 Ill figure it out for 8-10 weeks if my delts respond well to isolate them once a week instead of 3 which I currently do (rear delts on one of my two pull days and side delt on both 2 push days currently)

What do you think of lying lateral raises where you put the side of your torso against a bench. Wouldn’t this challenge the delts through the lengthened/mid range more?
@Beats-By-Anthony
@Beats-By-Anthony 3 жыл бұрын
Good question because Arnold did them often but hasn't the biggest delts either. Curious what Joey thinks!
@HypertrophyCoach
@HypertrophyCoach 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. And I think it can be a great option when equipment is limited. I just hate doing them cause they take twice as long (one arm at a time). So if I have cables and/or a machine, I’ll never do them.
@johnpeterson30
@johnpeterson30 3 жыл бұрын
@@HypertrophyCoach thanks! Yeah I agree the cables are more time efficient for sure, honestly incorporating side delt movements that overload in the lengthened range is a game changer. What would you recommend for the rear delts for that lengthened position overload? Assuming equipment is kind of limited.

For raises, yes. Don’t work great for presses though. (Just a matter of semantics for where the cable is relative to lower arm). So another overhead press variation should be in the tool belt as well

Can you actually build a great physique if someone has trained for 5+ years but wasted those years not knowing what they was doing and doing Yo Yo dieting? Like would that person have a chance to build a great body of they starting training and eating and sleeping right? My brother is 23 years old 5’8 164lbs and has a 275lbs bench, 500lbs on both deadlifts and 365lbs. He wants to know if he’d be able to build great big legs even if he has been off and on training for 7 years and feels he’s wasted his training life.
