HyperX QuadCast Gaming & Streaming Mic Review / Test

Today we’re looking at the new mic from HyperX which is a direct competitor to the Blue Yeti, the QuadCast. This is a USB Multi-pattern condenser microphone designed as a Streaming Mic, Gaming Mic, and Discord Mic. The mic does a decent job at rejecting background noise (while on the cardioid polar pattern), and the shock mount also does a decent job at rejecting bumps of the desk. However, the mic does suffer from serious plosive issues. The A/D conversion maxes out at 16-bit/48kHz, and all around it’s just an alright mic, in my opinion.

The mic stand threading and shock mount to me makes it a much more complete package than the Yeti. Not looking like a horse suppository helps too. I moved on from the Yeti and use XLR mics now, but if I could go back in time I’d take this over the Yeti. Thanks for the review, and congratulations on 100,000 subscribers!

Thank you Bandrew for all that you do and it's about time that someone with a great and well-rounded understanding on "What Does a Microphone truly need to have a great sound, ONE POLAR PATTERN 😎. I always search for that full bass, strong and clean radio/podcast sound, similar to the fullness of proximity effect when using dynamic mics, and for years I miss that in your videos, maybe because you remove or decrease them or its just your voice is naturally has not that deep tone. But today, with this mic particularly, finally I hear what I wanted to hear from a mic after couple of years and almost 100+ of your mic reviews For the first time in your videos I hear a mic that has clean fullness right out of the box, even with your thin/sharp voice tone! WOW!

Bruh thank you for actually saying what key switch you're using in the keyboard in this review. Too often reviewers say 'this is what it sounds like when typing!' but that tells us literally nothing! MX blues are a good example of a fairly common loud switch as well!

Thank you for the excellent review, To put some perspective on why I want a mediocre 4 pattern mic instead of a good 1 pattern mic: I'm buying this for a single specific purpose That I don't intend to do more than once a month (Conference calls) But If I buy a mic for that that doesn't have other polar patterns, then it's only useful for that limit usage. Having the other options means I might be getting more use out of this.

Thank you so much for the review, I've been looking through Microphones to find one for replacing my headset and to do a bit more professional work, and this showed up. As my headset is a HyperX headset, I wanted to know if this microphone lived up to the HyperX standards, or if it actually worked for more than 2 weeks without having to send a report to HyperX to say "My left ear and sound card are dead" to then immediately get sent replacements because it's so broken that they don't even need evidence their devices don't work at this point... Sorry, rambling. Thank you for the review, seriously, this just saved me a little bit of money, I think I'm just going to continue looking into the Yeti. Voice acting, music, and just chatting with friends, so I feel it's the best option at this point (especially since- as you said- most mics ARE just Yeti rip offs that want the same features so they can ride that wagon).

PREACH! 👏👏👏 The multi-faceted trend for "gaming/streaming" USB microphones is such a gimmick and totally unnecessary. Cardioid/Supercardioid/Hypercardioid would be far more acceptable for gaming and I often wonder why pro audio manufacturers don't think of this.

As an audiophile (at least for headphones) I consider gaming headsets an abomination. However, I've really liked what HyperX has done with their headsets. Well priced, well built, very comfortable and they sound okay. I actually like the company. I'm saying this to preface how much I dislike this mic so I don't sound negatively biased. Just like you said, it's a light mic. I think it feels extremely cheap and I was certain it was all plastic because of how thin and light the microphone feels. I don't think any microphone that's $139 ($154 with tax) should feel this cheap. Unless it's some hidden gem of a mic that performs like an SM7b but comes in the world's cheapest body, I repeat, no $154 mic should feel this cheap and weigh so little. With the Yeti being $69 on a deal right now and frequently being $79 with a free game promo every year, these Yeti copies are shooting themselves in the foot. Oh and I feel like the shock mount and internal filter are mostly for show and just part of the mics aesthetic. It does poorly with plosives and you can hear vibrations and handling noise on the stand and even when I had it on my mic arm. Oh speaking of, I can't use this with a Blue Compass because it doesn't weigh enough which is a bummer. They never sound better, they're never built better and they cost more and I don't even like the Yeti much. Thanks for the video and congrats on the play button!

Great analysis and insight. I also wanted to love this because I think the Cloud II are great. But it left a lot to be desired. I tapped it with some metal and it sounded like metal and it was cold to the touch. Perhaps it’s just a metal coating on plastic mold? I don’t know. But it’s stupid light.

Hi Podcastage! Happy gaming earthling with this mic for a year now and your review helped at the time. I have a challenge though. Using a USB mic means no PC audio card compatibility. Would you have a video that covers gaming/streaming microphones that would be compatible with the likes of creative soundblasterX sound cards (ie plugging with 3.5 jack)? Maybe that is not possible existing but I would love if you could cover this topic or have any suggestions! Great many thanks and keep up the fun work! Best, Cx
