I live in São Paulo state in Brazil, where these fishes comes from, also can be found in Rio de Janeiro state, unfortunately they’re almost unseen in nature, it’s near extinct because of humans degradation and because of other predators species introductions to their habitat. It brokes my heart to see them vanishing where it is endemic.

I've come back to your video on these fish at least three times--these specimens are _gorgeous_! I've been waiting for ages for my local PetSmart to get Von Rio Flame tetras in stock, I hope that will happen now that they are moving to a new, larger location. If only I lived in the US, so I could order from you! Thanks so much for your species spotlights, they have been at turns inspirational, aspirational, (always) educational, (always) entertaining, and sometimes even lifesaving. Certainly they've raised the quality of my fishkeeping and the quality of life for my fish.

I'm afraid to try any more tetras. I had 6 lemons and all died within 2 weeks. Everyone else is my tank is fine. I put them with geos and a pleco. My test shows everything is good. I guess the nitrates could be lower. They're at 10ppm...

I have 6 wild flame tetras all the same age. 5 are a healthy size for about a year old. But 1 is also a year old, but super tiny! It doesn’t have very vibrant colors. Is he/she okay?

Thanks for this video! I just got five of these and they're in my planted 10 gallon tank with a betta. I'd never seen them for sale around here until today so was curious about where they came from. Mine are not as brightly colored but I figure they need some time to chill out and get some good food and they'll color up.

I got 7 last week and two of them have taken over the bottom of the tank! They're going after my honey gourami, peacock gudgeon, and guppies which I'm not happy about. Like one took over one half of the 40 gallon and the other took over the other side so now the rest stay at the top but I know peacock gudgeon like the bottom. It sucks my fish cant swim around and they have a lot of space. I'm really thinking about giving them away or something because it's not fun sitting back watching my tank for some peace and those little terrors going after the others. They're those von rio flame tetra fish "supposedly" peaceful! How do I stop this? Should i just get rid of them? My fish are clearly stressed i really thought the behavior would calm down but it hasn't.

@shesellsfish8 жыл бұрын
I've kept them in the past. Super easy fish and very pretty too...but I wouldn't count on them not finding shrimp even in a densely planted tank...my cherry red population never got wiped out by them but it never seemed to grow either and they were always fat and happy little suckers.
@julianmichele88455 жыл бұрын
I’ve kept these with amano shrimp for over a year now and everybody seems fine. One of my shrimp did disappear off the face of the Earth, but that’s more probably due to the shrimp being a bit too adventurous for their own good (just the other day I discovered that my one remaining shrimp had crawled into the filter and survived by feeding on the cartridge for two weeks, so I suspect that the one I lost may have crawled its way all the way out of the tank; I also lost a crayfish that way many years ago, those darn crustaceans). Not sure what would have happened with smaller shrimp though, since the ones I have/had are fairly large, much bigger than tetra mouths.

Hi Rachel! You think they will be good tankmates with angelfish? Looking for any and all types of tetra that can be housed with angels. Thanks!
@RachelOLeary6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, small tetras and angels are ALWAYS iffy, once the angels get to breeding size. However, these are significantly taller bodied and may be worht a shot. I would absolutely avoid any of the "torpedo" shaped small tetras, as they will become a snack in time.
@kama37596 жыл бұрын

if you're taking general questions kinda related to this fish i do have one lol. i'm really curious about community schoolers that aren't going to fin nip. i've been googling it for days and there's so many mixed responses from all over the internet. some people swear every tetra and every barb fin nips all the time, others say never at all. some say with 10+ to a school and they don't nip. would love to hear your expert opinion on what is the best schooling fish i could pick that has the lowest chance of fin nipping in general.
@RachelOLeary8 жыл бұрын
+Jabinho nipping whose fins? Each others or a betta or something else in particular? Many variables come into play
@Jabinho8 жыл бұрын
Rachel O'leary thanks for getting back to me! in this case i have a betta. he's been bullying the group of females i have with him. and i'm looking for a schooling fish to add some activity to the tank to try and spread out his attention. tank is 65g. it has some driftwood with anubias and java fern, pretty sparsely planted. so there are spots to break line of sight, but not a LOT of hiding spaces. just six females and one male in there at the moment. i've separated the male for the time being and the females are getting along fine. before i go ahead and make the male's separation a permanent solution, i'd love to add a 10+ school of something. thanks again!
@RachelOLeary8 жыл бұрын
+Jabinho I dont'' think it often works out with any longevity to keep domestic bettas in mixed gender groups. If its wild betta, that is a different story. I have heard of good success with small danios or tetras (specifically neons of all things, but also embers) but doubt it will fix the problem. Good luck!
@Jabinho8 жыл бұрын
thanks for getting back to me again, i appreciate you taking the time. since i'm adding some more fish anyway i'll give the male one more SHORT LIVED chance in the tank with the increased stock levels. they are all domestic so i'm not really expecting it to work out taking into account your advice, but i'll try lol ;D thanks again and looking forward to more videos!
